$982 16GB versions, 200MB caps and throttling....
11:03AM Wednesday Jul 16 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: prices · business · wireless · world
Just in case you thought that Rogers iPhone data prices and low caps were ridiculous, Gizmodo points out a few countries where users have it much worse. In Belgium, all phones must be sold unlocked, but Mobistar customers must shell out €615 ($982) for the 16GB iPhone, sign a two-year contract, and then pay $96 per month for the company's most generous plan: a 1GB data cap and 540 minutes of talk time. In Spain, things get worse:
Movistar hits you up either €15 or €25 per month for their iPhone plans on top of a minimum voice charge per month that ranges from €9 to €90, depending on usage...Movistar's "unlimited" data plans have an evil twist: after consumption of your first gigabyte under the Plus plan (or a paltry 200MB for the standard), your speeds are capped at 128kbps down/64 kbps up.
You know you're doing a bang up job when you make both AT&T and Rogers pricing seem like immense bargains. On a related note, iSuppli says it costs Apple about $174.33 to manufacture each 8GB iPhone, plus $50 on IP royalties per unit. Of course that doesn't include marketing costs, though Apple clearly gets a lot of that for free. Also of note: Apples recent announcement that they sold 1 million iPhone in three days appears to be over-inflated.

Re: Apple Sucks!

I had the original iPhone and sold it. BEST decision yet. I am sure with 3G, the browsing speeds are faster, but WHY does this device STILL LACK MMS?

I have to go along with the Apple Sucks comment for the time being when such a basic feature is lacking from the device. I know that if someone sends you a picture, you get a text saying login to this site with this information to view your message. In most cases, the site did not work, and when it did, it was so SLOW.

Why Apple, can you not release a feature such as MMS?

Can't wait till Android handsets are released.

Re: Apple Sucks!

The justification is that there's no reason for MMS when you have e-mail, and now you have push e-mail (why yes, of course you should shell out for MobileMe) so there's no advantage to MMS.

Of course, the problem with this justification is that it assumes everyone has iPhones. That's great that your phone can use e-mail, but the millions of "free" phones out there don't (or charge extra monthly for e-mail, while a lot of people have texting plans), so you can't send them a picture (well, you can, and wait until they get home and check their e-mail, but that's slower and inferior)

I like Apple but I hate the iPhone.

On those hot days, I don't want to be wiping face goo off my shiny iPhone. Gross. My Sony handles face goo much better.

Just another reason I got rid of the phone. "Face goo" is really a huge problem on that phone. I found that I had to wipe the thing off constantly during the day to keep it looking good.

Re: hm...hows that saying go again?

Let me guess. You're one of these belgian customers who paid an exorbitant price for their phone. Did your provider throw in a bottle of lube by any chance? Sounds like you need it

Re: hm...hows that saying go again?

LMAO! If only I lived in Belgium...I certainly would have no need for the iphone! Its a beautiful Country!

Actually, my provider would be at&t, and since I dont have 3g coverage in my area, I dont have an iphone. I am looking for the 2g iphone however.

Nice try though...next comment?

Carriers hate iphone?

With atrocious pricing like this, it almost seems like carriers don't want the iphone to sell...

Re: Carriers hate iphone?

They've seen the data usage statistics. iPhone users actually USE their data plans, which means the carriers might actually need to build out more capacity for it. The nerve!

I'm pretty sure the typical iPhone user doesn't use their data plan anywhere near the amount a Blackberry user does.

I'm pretty sure the opposite is the case.

The types of activities people do on the iPhone consume much more bandwidth than activities typically done on a Blackberry. Blackberry users don't (usually) stream internet radio, listen to music on Seeqpod, stream YouTube videos, or download free applications.

I just burned up about 150 MB this on my iPhone 3G this morning streaming classic rock over a $4.99 internet radio application I bought on the new app store.

Re: Carriers hate iphone?

I am not so sure about that - given the battery life of the iPhone, I don't know how much streaming activity is actually is utilized depite the new apps, unless your iPhone was plugged in all the time. Blackberry users on the other hand, especially the enterprise users, have a lot more mail traffic and attachments than your typical iPhone user and you're right, the typical users don't use the streaming things as much, but I suspect that to change. Either way, I do think these other providers are taking advantage of iPhone users. No joke - I really don't think it should cost anymore than an unlimited Blackberry data plan.

Re: Carriers hate iphone?

Weird you should mention battery life. Take a look at this;

»blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/07/i···tte.html

Seems iPhone 3g is on top as far as most smart phones out there.

@verizon.net

I beg to differ. I use my moto Q much like a blackberry and work for a multi billion $$ software company. I DON'T stream stuff at all. My monthly data usage averages out to ~15MB. Myself,my co-workers and others I know only download attachments as needed. Mostly, it just takes up space on the devices. M average message DL is about 4kb. Takes a LOT of those to make up just one 4 minute song streamed.

Re: Carriers hate iphone?

Well everyone has different uses. I work for a multibillion (euro)dollar investment bank and have market data streamed to my Blackberry all day in addition to the mail. Of course not everyone uses it this way, but everyone uses it differently. Also, the typical streamed music app is what - 32kb streaming audio? It's not like it's CD quality audio being streamed. But granted, it's a lot of data nevertheless.

And as far as battery life is concerned - I was thinking along the lines of a Blackberry. WM6 phones which I think most of those phones on that chart are, do drain batteries, but the feature set is quite different I think. But anyway, the battery comment was brought up to talk about whether or not people would be streaming data that much on the iPhone with the battery capacity.

FWIW: Prior to the iPhone release, I was able to watch streaming TV without problems on $49 3G SonyEricsson, now I can't without stuttering in both the video and audio.

What?

But I thought European companies were so much more pro-consumer and more affordable and overall more awesome than American companies (and let's not talk about Canada)... What is this? Someone call the EU and get them on this.

Of course, the Euro/Dollar conversion rate is going to make any European pricing on anything look ridiculous, and don't get me started on the pound sterling...

Re: What?

I would think it would be cheaper because they could import it from here and pay a whole lot less money. You should see Universal Studios I've never seen so many foreign tourists in one place in my life. Many can afford prices here cause of our crap dollar.

It is definitely huge price gouging. It appears that they are trying to charge the same price in euros and dollars without giving any discount for a contract. So a 600 dollar phone without a contract to them is 600 euros with a contract instead of the appropriate exchange rate price of 378.91 dollars. It's the ultimate in price gouging, when converting prices just drop the dollar sign and add a euro sign.

Re: What?

Then that's an issue and cause for alarm. It's just going to encourage the black market to abuse the currency exchange to get what they want.

Rogers will, no doubt, move to match prices in Spain.

Probably the converse is true. Spain will try to mimic rogers on overuse charges resulting in riots in the streets and the burning down of buildings.

Get the facts straight PLEASE!

Karl Bode fails to realize after 3 months is up Canada will be the land of bankruptcies brought about by a communist society that encourages monopolies to rape their citizens of all their money. The overuse charges the highest in the world to the nth degree will put people into the streets and many of them will freeze to death during the harsh winter.
