Targeted marketing causes concerns about privacy

Online advertising is a huge and growing market with targeted advertising being one of the largest areas of growth. Changes may need to take place to some areas of this business approach as users across the nation and regulators in Europe both express concerns about privacy. The European Union has made a priority out of the issue. Google’s targeted ads are at the center of their review but all targeted advertising is being examined.
“"Online sites have to make sure they are not intruding people's privacy, otherwise targeted advertising will backfire," said Vincent Bonneau from French telecoms research group Idate.”
Backfiring seems to be what’s happened here in the U.S. (and elsewhere in the world) for Facebook users. They’ve noticed that the site’s new targeted marketing publishes their purchases for friends on the site to see. This has caused privacy concerns as well as general disgruntlement that a user’s preferences can be used to sell items to others on the site.

Not sure, maybe myspace haters? Or people that think they are too cool for anyone else and want to display that they are on facebook? But this is my guess...

Unbelievable

People still have the expectation of privacy...what a racket!

As adverts become more graphically intensive, the use of bandwidth to "project" them will also increase. Will we here from the ISPs about the excessive use of bandwith for something that they're making money off of; no.
So why do we hear from the ISPs about bandwidth "hogs" now. Same premise, they're making money off of you. But they want to minimize the amount that you use so they have the capacity to sell the same space twice!

I'm done ranting for today...

Apples and oranges (or apples and microscopic apples). Bandwidth hogs are using 200+ GB a month on P2P, newsgroups, etc. Ads are unlikely to use more than 10 MB.

Re: Unbelievable

10MB are you serious!!! with all the revolving flash ads in pages headers, footers and side panels. 10MB is an understatement. while it might not be as intensive a hardcore p2p, at my house we have many PCs so those advertisements add up quickly slowing down the entire network. I feel they are so bloated that I have been blocking many ad sites such as doubleclick ad google ad-sense. sure make pages load a hell of a lot faster.

Not sure if that's what the satire tag is for, but that's not what the linked article said at all. /shrug

Re: {satire} Facebook user ends relationship when he saw ...

Evidently you missed the part that HCT was making a joke that the guys girlfriend bought a leather whip. Which in theory would be more embarrassing that buying leather winter gloves.

So imagine if her mom was a Facebook "friend", and saw that her daughter bought a leather cat-o-nine tails or more ot the point, he saw his girlfriend bought the same object and that ended the relationship.

It's humor...hence the satire tag, and why you won't find any of it in the article. It's an humorous extrapolation of an actual incident with the facts and end results changed to enhance the story.

That was a weird article. The demographic was heavily biased to one religious group. It seems reporters are not going out past their neighborhoods or dorm rooms or wherever they got this story.

Ad block plus, it works wonders and blocks about 95% of the ads I would normally come across. Website owners might hate me, but it's nice to surf the internet without seeing banner ads that could give me a seizure.

Re: I heart ABP

Ad Block plus also blocks out the ads that are part of the popup that allow you to opt out of the targeted ads. What I think you are "missing" is that it's not really what YOU see but what others see about you.

So yes you may have not seen that you have to click here to opt out of displaying you bought medicine to get rid of crotch crabs, but everyone else will see it.

I have ABP and it doesn't block this.

Really? You may want to ensure it is on and you are subscribed to a filter list, and that you have the most up to date blacklist. I rarely see ads online.

Yes to all and it doesn't block this ad. I assure you.

Flash Advertising = Bad

The most annoying type of advertising online is those stupid Adobe Flash ads.

Thank the writers of the "flashblock" plugins for Mozilla/Netscape. So I don't have to view those ads.

I would uninstall Flash altogether, but it's useful for some webpages (not advertisement).

Re: Flash Advertising = Bad

Yes unfortunately flash is getting such a bad reputation from online advertising but really, its such a great, flexible, and feature filled way to create all sorts of things. GIF images are put to shame by flash. Even HTML and Java to some extent is ancient compared to the things you can do with flash.

Re: Flash Advertising = Bad

Two problems with Flash:

Your content can't be indexed properly, thus little to no entry into search engines.

You need to load a plugin to view content, some people prefer non-evasive content that doesn't eat processor cycles like they're going out of style.

Noscript for Firefox is a absolute dream. Not only does it make it more secure, it seems to have blocked about 70% of ads.

I have been using it for about 3 or so months now. Can't remember when the last time I saw one of those rapidly blinking ads that could give someone a seizure.

@verizon.net

get rid of popups and disreputable ad mills then well talk

I hate online advertisements because they are annoying (popups especially) and they often employ devious methods of capturing your attention. Some popups, for example one I encountered on microsofts hotmail login page said if I did not give my email address over they would disable my hotmail account! If advertisers cleaned up their act I would have no problem with them. For example Google ads I do not mind at all. Right now Im using fx + adblock and flashblock and rarely run into any ads.

Invasive Adds are a total turn off.

I don't mind banner adds so much, if there not strobing any annoying. Pop ups are annoying as well. But what really made my find ad-block plus was when ads started having animatings and going all over the webpage you went to and you had to search for the x to turn it off, thats when i decided it just too much and actively looked for something to block them out all together.

@comcast.net

what ads?

who thinks online advertising works at all? I mean with all the blocking methods out there... AdBlock Plus extension, Hosts files, DNS Redirector, etc.

Re: what ads?

Users with Firefox and AdBlock make up a good percentage of BroadbandReports users but a small fraction of the general web-surfing population.

AdBlock->save sanity

I use both AdBlock and Flashblock with Firefox at home on a MAC, and when I use a public computer in the library I nearly go nuts with the beserk flash ads, popups galore, and simply obnoxious ads. I only use a public computer rarely! One week without AdBlock/Flashblock and I would go insane.

The World Is Unhappy with Online Advertising - REALLY?

I hardly think the "world" is unhappy about this. They just click on them. That is not the act of an unhappy person.

Web users LOVE to click on things like that. Whats the harm?

I thin only the publisher and 15 people in this discussion forum are unhappy with these ads.

There is a lot of big ad revenues being made by "unhappy" people!

Make that 16. I'm sort of partial to Privoxy, as I can block the crap to all my machines from one firewall.

Add blocking DNS Servers, feel free to use. (I'll eventually fix the "404" Error with a place holder).

Happened to me.

Click for full size
I frequently buy tickets from Fandango ... well, Fandango realized I was logged into Facebook and after my Fandango purchase, a little pop-up at the bottom said, "Sending your purchase to your Facebook profile ..."

Now my Facebook profile says "Matthew bought Fred Claus on Fandango" ... to me, this is over the line. I didn't opt-in for this. It also looks like it's an automatic opt-in ... and you have to opt-out each website manually. It was set to "Notify me first" ... but the little notification was a 50x50 window, at the bottom right of the page for maybe 3-5 seconds. NO way I could have read it and clicked no before it was gone.
