| what about the other Vonage wireless router, the WRT54GP2 ? I was thimking of getting this one instea, I am having a horrible problem with my internet connection. Keeps dieing all the time. I have a Dlink DI-514 Router and they told me I was a problem called Double Nating, so I had t run a crossover cable between the vonage and the wireless router, but getting a wireless vonage router would fix this.
How much of a difference is the new vonage wireless router from the old one? | |

| No Diversity Antenna? No GigE? 10/100mbit Ethernet is so yesterday. All my computers have GigE ports and there are no consumer routers that have Gigabit switches. And only one antenna? Linksys is starting to look more like consumer Netgear stuff every day. Even if I wasn't already a Vonage customer I'd still pass this up like a 486 processor. | |

Netgear's got the FVS124G which features 4 Gig Lan ports, a dual wan router, and 25 IPSec VPN connections with all the latest ciphers, all for around $160 bucks. This is the most bang for you buck that I can see in the consumer routning market if you want gig lang as of today. | |

I recently purchased the WRTP54G (office depot using a $20 coupon). I've switched out my existing WRT54G and am using the WRTP54G but have not activated Vonage service yet. My experience so far is very disappointing. The unit runs much hotter (to the physical touch) than the WRT54G and it has dropped my broadband performance drastically. Now my network crawls! I have done nothing special to the device and do not have the wireless activated.
Bottom line is I am thinking about returning the device this weekend. I have entered a support issue with Linksys but do not have a reponse yet. | |

| I was worried and suprised at how hot the case of this unit was. I solved this very simply.
Go to Radio Sack, buy a fan. I bougth a 115v unit and it sits next to the router and cable modem, keeps evertying cool.
Upgraded firmware and now I seem to be rock solid, or at least as solid as 4 days of testing would make it. | |

| Does non-P Linksys have QoS -- use that? If the reports of the WRTP54G are that it A) runs hot, and B) may still have firmware issues, then would a good solution be to use a WRT54G and turn on QoS for the Vonage port? (it can it do that, right?)
I've just been looking at Vonage for the past 24 hours, and here's what I'm thinking...
1 - In order to have the Vonage service be portable (take it to work, to a friends for the weekend, etc) it would be nice not to have the TA integrated into my router.
2 - I run various web services (personal -- only used by me) so I don't want to get mired down with a second NAT tier (which makes Vonage portability a PITA)
3 - Isn't QoS meaningless in this application?? I've heard that ISPs drop QoS tags anyway, so that services like Vonage don't try to manage their own packet piority on the ISPs network. Cananyone verify this? (I'm on Comcast)

| Problems and No firmware from manufacturer. Let me preface the discussion with the fact that I was a network administrator for about 8 years and have continuing experience with networking products since transitioning to application development.
The following are my experiences with attempting to get the Linksys WRTP54G router to function. I originally purchased it at Best Buy because the rebate program seemed to make it almost a no brainer with the rebates totalling more than the cost of the device.
After opening the box: I read the agreement. An item to note is the nearly $40 cancelation fee that is charged by Vonage unless you send the router back to Vonage. I read the rebate requirements, which state A WIRELESS router must be sent in, whereas Best Buy stated that any router could be sent in. I read the manual cover to cover before attempting anything. I used the installation software to configure the router, however, the internet could never be reached at the end of the configuration process when using the configuration software.
After a lot of trial and error attempting to manually configure the router using the built in administrative web pages, I realized that I could not use the administrative pages unless the router was disconnected from the internet. Every time I connected the WAN/Internet port, I would receive an "internal communication error" message when trying to access the administrative pages. This occurred with both a wired and wireless client. I also disabled all firewalls to eliminate all potential points of conflict. Once I got that error on the router, I would have to restart the router to get it to work with the internet again.
When trying to configure the wi-fi portion, I was not able to configure the router to disable SSID broadcasting and have a client (a Linksys WPC54GS) connect. Whenever the SSID broadcast on the router was disabled, the link lights on both the router and the wireless adapter card would flash extremely rapidly. It seemed as though some sort of flood was occurring. A wired connection would not work at this point either.
I called Linksys support. I spoke to an initial call taker, was transferred to a supervisor and was then supposed to get an expert. Instead I sat on hold for an hour. All this on my cell phone since my "land line" was supposed to be implemented by this device.
I browsed the internet some and saw that some people had been provided updated firware revisions. I was running on 1.00.18 and it appeared that there might be versions as high as 1.00.29, yet there were no firmware updates available for device on the linksys web site. Currious.
I decided I would give Linksys a call again and give them one more chance to resolve the issue. This time, the wait times were shorter but was stil transferred up to a third person. Rather than try to go through a long resolution on a marginal cell phone connection to India, listening to the echo of my voice, I simply asked if there was an updated firmware version I could try to resolve my problem. The tech said that if there was, it could only be provided by Vonage. I explained that I was concerned by the fact that they did not provide firmware for the device that they manufacture and he said. "It would be easiest to exchange the device for a new one since it is only two days old and should function out of the box."
Experience has taught me to never purchase equipment where you are unable to obtain firmware from the original manufacturer. Linksys/Cisco have been in business for a long time, I trust that I will be able to get firmware for some time to come. Vonage is a completely new company, if they go away, support for the device goes away. With two companies, it is too easy for the customer to be caught in the middle of finger pointing when there is a problem.
My personal opinion is that this device was an endeavor poorly executed by both companies. Either the manufacturer should provide all support for the device, or both companies should provide equal support (ie. firmware obtainable from either company). The product, from my perspective, was also brought to market before it had been adequately tested. All considered, I have no confidence in this product and I am returning both of my wireless products and will research my options more carefully.
I am a longtime owner of a Linksys BEFSR41 router that has met my needs well for the past 4 years or so (it's been so long I can't recall when I specifically started using it). This isn't a case of any prior dissatisfaction with Linksys. | |

i can attest to the horrible software on this device. it came with 1.00.20 firmware and out of the box the following was wrong. 1) did not provide correct dns servers to DHCP clients ... gave it's own ip so hosts could not resolve 2) packets dropped frequently and ping times for some packets longer than 1second 3) overheating and crash i think. even with new bios 1.00.29 DNS/DHCP issue exists and the router still hangs and has to be power cycled.. and oh yeah i'm qualified to write their firmware code... i downloaded 1.00.37 beta from linksys... as soon as i get my linux box back up i'm compiling this baby... if i break it, i'll return this to staples.. what a piece of crap... good idea though. | |

After speaking with Vonage a while, and not getting any satisfaction re "if you supply your own ATA, then upon cancellation there will be $40 disconnection fee, which will be refunded upon return of the ATA,..." (sigh).
Later speaking with Verizon about other matters, I learned of VoiceWing. It seemed that for $5 more per month I'd get to deal with smarter people instead... but this turned out be a fantasy.
I ordered VoiceWing, but after spending a few hours trying to setup my so-so Netgear MR814 (new firmware, reboot everything, port forward, reboot again, check UPnP, reboot, ..., buy a new phone) I phoned Verizon and talked a bit. After another 2 hours of fiddling I called them to say that they're welcome to come out to my home and get it working, and I would not cancel service. (whirr, bizzzt, crackle). Okay, one more go with tech support...
It turned out that the Linksys PAP2 firmware was not getting the proper default gateway. Why? Perhaps it's because they assume everyone is running 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 at home(?). I surmised that if I could not rely on the ATA to boot properly on any DHCP router (on a corporate LAN, for example) then screw it. Goodbye.
So I've decided that until a VoIP provider is completely open to which ATA I use, and not lock out the admin interface, then they're going to have to live without me. Although maybe I'll try Skype, but only because there's no Term agreement, tho I'm leary of the fact that no non-PC gateway exists yet (e.g. an ATA for direct RJ11-to-Router connection) and I'll have to connect through my PC. (I'm hoping that somebody comes up with a Skype module for the Sveasoft firmware, if/when it comes out for the WRTP54G).
Oh, and then there's there are VoIP Wi-Fi phones -- Vonage has a beta... so it's coming!

I used the installation software to configure the router, (REPLY: If you ever were a Network admin, you would NOT have installed this "Software". I immediately threw away this "I'm a Newbie and I don't know networking, help me out disk", and went directly to 168.192.15.1 and added the firmware update that I got off the tftp server at vonage, then configured, and everything has worked great since.)
It's ashame that a network admin would have these simple problems of connecting to a router. I just don't even know what to say, except it's good you changed positions. Before slamming a product, you should explain your lack of qualifications and not your ability to slam a product for lack of knowledge. | |

| The New WRTP54G I hate wizard setups, they make too many assumptions. I configured it start to finish no big issues. At the end, no internet connection. Got all done and my static IP address doesn't work. Remove it, and everthing works great. Turns out it was my providers issue, but my old router was more forgiving. This router gives me great signal coverage, in the same spot that I had struggled with my old Linksys, and Belkin 802.11b routers. Have not activated vonage yet, I have my packet8 hooked up to it at the moment. Haven't seen any heat issues or problems so far very fast. | |
