User Lucky644 points to this thread in our Telus forum, which explores how Canadian telco Telus has launched a new 6Mbps downstream 1 Mbps upstream DSL tier, dubbed "High Speed Extreme 6.0". According to the discussion, the new tier is available only to existing customers for the time being, and isn't available in all areas yet. The tier comes with a bandwidth cap of 60GB per month for $45.95 a month. This announcement comes on the heels of Canadian cable provider Shaw's unveiling of a 25Mbps tier with a 150GB per month cap.

At least they're trying

Trying to compete with Shaws 10mbit and soon to come 25mbit.

60gb cap is just a formality though luckily they don't enforce it.

Re: At least they're trying

trying?? BULL PLOP!, Cogeco's standard packages is 10Mbit down and 640 up, with a 100GB cap. with their "pro" being 16Mbit/1Mbit up

This is NOT news worthy that they're uping their speeds to 6mbit.

I'm just hating the fact that i'm moving into a Roger's area soon, and Sympatico has no dsl service in that area.

A month ago or so max was 2.5 for residential then they upped to 3.0, now its doubled to 6.0

That's newsworthy

Assuming you are close enough to your switch to QUALIFY.

And most people in the big three urban areas will be within the next year and a half, if the broadband build is on schedule.

I agree with lucky644 See Profile, It is newsworthy, because a very large number of smaller communities (like the one I'm in), are mainly only wired up with Telus. Sure we have a local cable company, "Platinum Communications" if you care to look em up, but hey have 10 gig caps, and they enforce it with $5 per gig overusage. How's that for competitive-ness? I'll take my Telus Server 3.0 plan and Satellite TV any day over their Cable-Crap.

Doubling the speeds from 3.0 to 6.0 is awesome. (I even considered the 2.5 - 3.0 jump was awesome, considering my 2.5 speeds were about 2.2mbps, and my 3.0 speeds are 2.9mbps, thats a jump from 274KB/sec to 365KB/sec, Plenty impressive for me, and now that'll be going up to about 700KB/sec, That's amazing.

Not very many people in small communities have big cable companies like Rogers or Shaw. Especially the ones with less than 4000 population.

Re: At least they're trying

Then I had a near-perfect connection a few months ago, my DSL Modem trained its upload at 864kbps (That was from straight from my DSL Modems Statistic page.)
Speed tests averaged at 768 kbps (with overhead and all), on the odd lucky day when I sat and reset my DSL Modem a few times, it syncs in the 800s, but its never less than 764.

Try to screw the rest of us... you mean

What about my 2.5mb down, 1mb up (which only ever trains at 640k) that I pay $90 a month?? They'll give 6/1 for about half of what I pay for 2.5/.6? Where is my vaseline.

Yeah but with a 60 GB cap anything over 512 kbps, if even that high is pretty useless.

Speed and transfer caps are not the same thing. Higher speeds are very good for almost all users. It lets downloads go very quickly. The higher speed doesn't mean that you should be downloading non-stop night and day. The only ones hurt by transfer caps are those who are constantly downloading everything under the sun. For those, they should pay more.

To me, excluding iran/a few other odd countries, the UK and canada seem like the only countries with these 60 GB limits. In germany you can get 50/10 for a reasonable price, in the US you can get 7/768 without caps, 3/768 without caps, or if you live where I do 30/9.5 without caps all for a reasonable price.

Even in canada there are ISPs like mountaincable with great speeds, 50 day retention on usenet for a reasonable price which twizlar See Profile could probably attest, do not cap.

Yep, there are pleanty of Good isps around that do not cap and have decent service. Most ADSL Isps in eastern canada do not cap, or offered Uncapped Services (ie. Teksavvy)

What a nice way of saying...."People who run P to P software and download/upload illegal music and videos and warez 24/7........

I think most people don't understand what bandwidth is. It's a rating of the AMOUNT of data that can be transferred per second. A 1.5 Mbps pipe is the same "speed" as a 10 Mbps pipe. The difference is the amount of data that can be pushed through the pipe in one second. ie: 1.5 Mb's vs 10 Mb's.

My point being, they're the same speed, what differs is the amount of data going through per second. When you upgrade to a larger connection (say from 1.5 to 10 Mbps) you don't get a faster connection. People often are confused about bandwidth so I thought I'd post this in easy to understand terms for the sake of clarity as to "bandwidth" and what it is.

Telus doesn't enforce their caps heavily. Many of the Enhanced (60 gig cap) users go over 100 gigs a month. Some have even went over 150 gigs without getting warnings or e-mails. Telus + Warnings = Nearly Non-existent.

@telus.net
.6 up is pretty much what you would expect from a 1 Mbps upload rate. Understand that a certain amount of your bandwidth gets used up in overhead.

On a 2.5 Mpbs download rate, expect around 1.5 to 2 Mbps on average.

Re: Try to screw the rest of us... you mean

then how come with my old provider i used to max out my upload rate at 1Mbps? .6 is not what you should be expecting from a 1Mbps line. if it says 1Mbps you should get 1Mbps and you should not settle for anything less.

Glad I don't live in Canada..

90% of our ISPs are unlimited and usually people have to download hundreds of GBs to be considered "abusing".

And even then, many of the ISPs that have so-called caps (e.g. Cogeco) don't enforce them. I regularly pull 1-1.1MB/s from Newsgroups using my Cogeco connection and have never heard a peep after breaking 60GB.

Re: Glad I don't live in Canada..

Shaw in Canada routinely enforces their bandwidth caps - by charging a ridiculous amount of money if you go over even 100 MB. Sure they can offer 10MB speeds, but with a 60GB cap, what's the point?

Other ISPs (MTS in Winnipeg, for example, and SaskTel) have no caps at all - not official or unofficial.
