Provided they're using a blutooth headset...
(old news - 01:08PM Monday Aug 01 2005)
tags: wireless · security · Oddities
Bluetooth Security was a big topic at Defcon in Vegas over the weekend. P2PNet points to an odd and amusing little experiment dubbed the "Car Whisperer", which allows users with a Linux Laptop and a directional antenna to "inject audio to, and record audio from bypassing cars that have an unconnected Bluetooth handsfree unit running". Useful "to talk to that pushy Audi driver right behind you," suggests the blog.

Re: lol

That is assuming you don't get in an accident as you mess with your laptop and directional antennae.

Which is worse?

a dude talking on cell phone.

OR

a dude messing with his laptop, antennae, and microphone to tell you shove it.

Yes, this is sort of like using a bazooka to kill a fly. An illegal bazooka, no less.

Not that bazookas are legal for the average person to have.

That's why you get a passenger to do the dirty work.

Re: lol

No, thats why you get a small "parabolic" material and mount your antenna in the rear, ready for the assult (or mischeif). It could be more amusing than you think.

get one of those old Buick station wagons with the backwards facing jumpseat in the trunk area and have the person with the laptop be your "Tailgunner" with the directional antenna.

Or rearrange or replace a few of your words slightly and get an entirely new message for the hot chick in front of you.

"Get the F*** off my rear!"
Why not just move over and let the guy pass? In most states, the law requires drivers on roads with two or more to move over from the leftmost lane so that cars behind them can pass, regardless of your or their speed. Let the cops catch the speeder and slow traffic, keep right.

Better off unknown technology

Someone will eventually sell the Mr. Microphone for Bluetooth.

"Hey, good-lookin', we'll be back to pick ya up later!"

Re: Better off unknown technology

I was thinking the convoy song myself, but good call nonetheless.

I've always wondered how built in bluetooth stuff works in expensive cars. For example the Acura TL has bluetooth in it. Would you be able to send a message to the on board bluetooth if a phone isn't paired with it? That would rock way more to play your voice over the radio in the bluetooth automobile.

Change your passkey

This particular hack (carwhisper) can only be done if the bluetooth device is not busy (your phone isn't already connected) and you happen to use passkey 0000 or 1234. (often the factory default) Here's a more interesting bluetooth hack.

Great idea, unless it turns out to be you Boss!

While the chances of being tailgated by your boss is slim, I could see it happening.

Several years ago, when I working for NEC, I often saw co-workers as I was driving to work. One day I left for work quite work early (about 4:45 AM) and there were few cars on the road. I was cruising along just under 70, when I noticed a car entering the freeway at one of the on-ramps. I really didn't think anything of it, but with-in seconds, this car pulled behind me, and began tailgating. What surprised me was that there were almost no other cars on the road, and this vehicle could have easily passed me using either the of the other lanes! In any case, I sped up to 75. The vehicle behind me sped up as well! Thinking that it might be a coincidence, I sped up to 80, reasoning that either the person in the vehicle was purposely harassing me, or it was a coincidence. To my surprise, at 80 mph, the vehicle behind me was still on my tail! At that point, I decided that it would be prudent to move over, rather than to risk a ticket. I moved over, and began slowing. As I did, I looked over and recognized the pickup truck! I saw that the driver was a female co-worker with whom I worked closely. The vehicle took off down the road. Later while working beside my co-worker, I confronted her about the incident. She said she didn't know what I was talking about. I describe the situation in detail from my perspective, but she didn't seem to remember the occurrence. I believed her as I figured that she didn't even realize what she was doing, only because she often seemed spacey at work.

While she wasn't my boss, I can see how a situation with the boss could have occurred all the same!

Re: Great idea, unless it turns out to be you Boss!

Women drive like that all the time...... my ex wife used to drive down the middle lane, if she ended up behind someone going 80, she would go 80; however eventually she ended up behind some junk heap and would go 40 on an interstate.
