Shrinking PC dimensions for new technology
(old news - 11:45AM Friday Nov 23 2007)
tags: business · wireless · alternatives · world
Government-funded researchers in Taiwan have developed a new device which aims to bring the functionality of a PC down to handheld dimensions using WiMax technology. The MTube is pocket-sized but can hold up to 8 Gb of data and uses a 1 Ghz microprocessor which allows it to run software intended for PCs. Despite it’s size, it’s a computer and not a wireless-enabled phone. The MTube won’t run off of 3G networks and is designed primarily for WiMax use although it will be operable on some Wi-Fi networks.
“Development of the MTube, which is made solely from parts manufactured in Taiwan, is aimed at promoting Taiwanese made goods, as well as developing more devices and applications for WiMax wireless Internet broadband services”
The country hopes to be able to set itself apart as a leader in WiMax technology and developments. They’ve been working on the technology extensively since teaming up with Intel a few years back.

The MTube, as the device is called, carries a 1GHz microprocessor made by Via Technologies Inc., an x86-based processor able to use software meant for PCs. But the MTube weighs only 150 grams and has a 2.8-inch screen, so it's small enough to fit in person's pocket. It can store 8G bytes of songs, photos and other data and runs on a Linux OS.

There are quite a few of these types of pcs available now without wimax. »www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory···bile-PCs
Its not taking off because the cost of mobile access is put on top of cellphone charges, making it unaffordable for most people.
Looks like wimax will be the same, too expensive.

I guess it depends on how you use it. I know 2 people who got the iPod Touch(similar to this MTube) and they use it to access their in-home WiFi system and browse the internet from any room in their house and out in the back yard, etc. One friend also uses it to access free WifI hotspots at restaurants, etc. They don't look at it as a potential phone device - just a very portable PC easier to carry around than a laptop.

Portable devices will rock, eventually..

Just give us 802.11 b/g/n device now.. Wimax is primarily commercial fertilizer wireless. The more wireless devices that compete with the ipod touch/iphone, the better.
