| Design ? Why such a bad looking design ? I understand it's a first generation design , but it looks horrendous ,maybe they should have contacted the makers of the iphone knock off and had them make the cases.
I like the os being based on linux , but I think this won't make me switch providers. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

| Re: Design ? I'd prefer this to the iPhone. Especially the pull out keyboard. It looks like a very functional device that should be easy to use.
And who cares what it looks like. A mobile device, for me at least, isn't a fashion statement. It is "how well does it do what I want it to do".

I traded in my q for a voyager and im sorely missing it. Hopefully us verizon folks will get one that looks a bit better. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

| Re: UGLY I have had my ATT tilt (ATT 8925) (AKA HTC TYTN II without the front facing cam) for one year today. It is a fantastic PDA! (great touch screen and QWERTY keyboard). It is also a great improvement over the (ATT 8525). I have not had any problems with it (unlike the 8525) no resets needed at all in 12 months. Wayne | |

| When did we ge so concerned about design? The iPhone looks great, but function wise is a complete mess - no removable battery, no background function (seriously still?) - paying extra for ring tones? and of course - the keyboard.
Obviously I don't want a brick in my pocket, but function will trump style for me every time.

| Re: When did we ge so concerned about design? True. Then again, I bought my iPhone after I bought my HTC Mogul. GUess which one I use more? Despite a heaping helping of slowness at times, the Mogul. It does what I want it to do, supports background tasks to a fault, has a GPS that can be used with live mapping\driving software, has high-speed data that's available everywhere, and actually has a pretty functional design. Not sexy like the iPod touch (I'd trade a new one in larger capacity for my iPhone in a heartbeat...iPhone is 2G 8GB) but very functional. This new HTC G1 looks even a shade better than the Mogul, though it's odd that Google\HTC\T-Mobile didn't adopt the glossy motif seen on such new devices as the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro.
Then again, the G1 is a no-nonsense, unassuming platform that's pretty much a full-featured testbed for the Android OS, using a design that works well on a touch-screen smartphone; I've seen a Mogul or two in the wild beside my own. If you've got a problem with that, have fun paying $90 plus tax on the iPhone for their lowest voice plan, plus data and messaging...I can get a T-Mobile plan with messaging and data for $65 plus taxes and junk fees. Oh, and the G1 is a little less expensive, with expansion capabilities up to 32GB when the card comes out (16GB is out now, will probably get for my phone).

If you know what you are doing, free ringtones are easy enough to do on an iPhone if you are willing to work at it.
My friend is a BIG iPod fan and he bought an iPhone. He already is complaining about it because it is not as easy as he wants it to be. Mind you, he is no technojunkie but he still is kind of oblivious to the fact not everything is one button.
I do agree, the level of customization on the iPhone is pretty pathetic and that's the reason you have people "jailbreaking" their phones.
The G1 aka HTCDream will be a lot more open source and will have a lot more options. However, you got to wonder how Google will make money. Apple can control what goes on the iPhone because of its App Store but putting stuff on your G1 should be easier even though we don't know how it will affect performance (bad apps, malware, etc.)

| Who cares about the phone This is what EVERYONE is missing including Apple. It's NOT about the phone, it's about the software. As time goes on and more phones running Android are available on more providers networks you can simply switch phones and/or providers and still keep the same familiar GUI.
That is what will make Android a real proprietary phone killer. It is also what is scaring providers as it lowers the barriers to people switching.

| Real emulator Or you can get a real Android emulator at »code.google.com/android/ and start learning how to code for it. You can also issue commands to it to show that there is not network, emulate an incoming call, battery life, etc. | |
