T-Mobile Won't Talk About Tethering
The state of the tethering union...
by Karl Bode Thursday 03-Dec-2009 tags: prices · wireless · consumers
Mike Dano over at Fierce Wireless does a nice job running down the specifics for each wireless carrier when it comes to tethering -- or using your phone as a modem. Specifically amusing is T-Mobile, who tells Dano they don't offer tethering and won't support it. This despite the fact that T-Mobile customers tether their handsets all the time, for no additional charge. You'd think this could be a competitive differentiator for T-Mobile worth highlighting, but apparently they're not too keen to talk about it:

"Please note that T-Mobile does not currently offer or support handset tethering," the carrier wrote in response to questions. "Data plans are intended for Web browsing, messaging, downloading applications and similar activities on your device and are not intended to provide Internet connectivity for computers." But what of T-Mobile users who claim to have tethered to the carrier's network? "At this time T-Mobile has no further comment."

The first rule of T-Mobile tethering club is that you apparently don't talk about T-Mobile tethering club. Meanwhile, iPhone users continue to wait for tethering functionality, while Verizon promises tethering for Droid sometime next year for an extra $30 on top of your existing wireless data plan.

So?

We don't officially "support" - doesn't mean we're gonna block you from doing it. We just wont offer customer support. We've been told to refer customers to the forums for support...

That's just another secret of T-Mobile's CS. They say they don't support it, but they do.

Same thing with unlocked iPhones and people wanting to use it on T-Mobile. iPhones aren't supported, but CS is more than willing to help you set up the settings for web, messaging, VM, etc...

Looks like you don't even subscribe to a data plan.

How funny

I USED to have T-mobile ... started back in 2006. The one thing that i REALLY remember is that I would tether my T-Mobile RAZR to their network all the time.... didn't take more than 20 minutes to figure it out, and i had NO data plan.

Really sad how they wont support it!

Just don't support it.

Have a friend who works there. They just don't support it but some reps can walk them through how to do it but the support articles don't. He said he just usually referred them to a website to tell them how to do it.

Kindof like if you have a problem with a third party application you downloaded from somewhere else. They don't block you from downloading it but if you have a problem with it then you have to contact the manufacturer or figure it out yourself.

Weird

My cell provider provides tethering at no cost... provided you have one of the packages that includes it.

For example... on the Blackberry they offer 2 routes, you can have unlimited e-mail(Can't be used with a Blackberry Exchange Server) and unlimited messaging (blackberry messenger) for $15. Double it to $30 and they will throw in unlimited Browsing on the device.

But if you want to connect to a BES, or use Tethering, you sign up for one of the other service plans.

$25 gets you 1GB of transfer... with extra data costing 0.03/MB
$60 gets you 3GB... with extra data costing 0.03/MB
and $75 gets you unlimited... all of these packages include tethering at no additional cost.

Expensive! And likely regional.

As to the T-Mobile tethering feature, it looks like they allow it, just not explicitly. Much better than the carriers that try to exploit their customers for ever more cash just for using a cable to their PC.

I even caught a Rep in their upsell
"So, if I were to connect a USB cable from my phone to my computer I would need a tethering plan?"
"Yes."
"But, what if I was just transfering data from the computer to the phone?"
"Ohh....then, no you don't."

Even AT&T tells their customers that they need a plan to use "free" GPS. Not that they offer a GPS program on their phones, but that in order to USE GPS AT ALL you need to purchase a monthly plan.

Android Users

Just get PDANet.

It is a tethering app, and it's free!

This tethering is just a perk that T-Mobile keeps hush hush. Even the reps at the store know all about tethering...

T-Mobile Tethering

I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile specifically for the capability (supported or not) to tether my Dash 3G without hinderance or extra cost. Casual usage when in a pinch is great, I use WiFi or other mobile broadband for anything more than a few dozen megs a month. I couldn't justify an extra fee of $30/mo to Big Red for that moderate level of casual tethering.

My biggest nightmare is that all this internet exposure of T-Mobile's "dirty little scret" is that they decide to either start milking a neglected cash cow ala Verizon, or else totally break it like Sprint does, in order to "protect the business model" as one employee said on another forum.

T-Mobile's Cole Broadman did promise last August that he would not disable tethering acess or break tethering clients in the OSes which support it. I can only hope he and future T-Mo executives continue to uphold this promise.

with a little help...

They may not support or help you on the phone, but they don't make it very hard with their windows mobile smartphones. They even include the application, right out of the box! Been this way with my old dash, the dash 3g i had briefly, and the touch pro2.

What's the point of this story?

T-Mobile has been offering tethering at no additional charge for years (with a wink and a nod)...all while officially not supporting it.

As other posters have stated, some tech support reps are more than happy to point you in the right direction to get it set up.

My Touch Pro 2 came with instructions on how to tether on TMO's network. I highly doubt that information would have been put in the box without TMO's knowledge.

The point apparantly is that Karl Bode needed a story to fill in the gaps until he made his Fight Club reference.

rooted, tethering, android

Tmobile and Android have to be the best thing going right now for the tech savvy user. I love the fact that I rooted my phone, can get support on it from tmobile on apps that don't work with rooted phones, they have great costomer service. Example: "thanks for letting us know we will make that app work with rooted phones". Also can tether with it for the low low price of 80 bucks for unlimited talk, text, web, oh and add to the mix google voice and i get international calling for in my case .02 cents a min to europe.

T-Mobile Won't Talk About Tethering

This is so funny...I use my Blackberry under T-Mobile as a modem for my laptop. I actually talked with a T-mobile tech support person on how to do it and she talked me through how to set it up...I am just saying...

@tmodns.net

T-Mobile Rocks... tether and the fastest 3G

They should hype that up.

I've tried side by side comparisons in Houston / Cypress and West Beltway area near Fry

G1
I phone 3GS
Droid
ATT wireless usb
Verizon usb

G1 surfs at 1.8 Mbps
Droid at 1.2 Mbps
Att wireless at 0.8 Mbps
3GS at .6 Mbps on a good day

T Mobile with the new HPSA network rolling out in a few days will ROCK!!!

podstolom

@kanren.net

T-Mobile should hype it up

It just seems to me that if T-Mobile would just clarify it's position on tethering and codify it as a bulleted line item on it's smartphone, blackberry and android data plans, it could hype it up in teriffic ads and really make AT&T and VZW squirm and writhe on a really toasty hotseat. Especially as AT&T and VZW have yet to implement (paid) tethering on thei Iphone and Droid. What a perk to go along with their HSPA+ rollout.

Tethering in T-Mobile

I was hunting around their site for an actual "tethering package" and I couldn't find one (since I recently switched from the death star to them). Intrigued; I entered into a live web chat with a rep. She told me that tethering is included in my data plan!! However, she kept touting unlimited use, which I can accept since it is a "soft cap" and not a "hard cap" Why do I accept it? Well, they don't shut off my service after 10GB of data usage like a certain other company with a V in it's name.
The rep even said that if I could figure out how to do, then I am more than welcome to use it!

This is a lot more interesting response than what I would get from AT&T (AT&T would just want globs of money to even talk about tethering/ICS). I think I will stick with T-Mobile for awhile at least, as it doesn't seem like they will nickel-dime a customer to death.
