T-Mobile Warns Employess of More Layoffs
'Further Aligning our Costs With our Revenue Realities
by Karl Bode Tuesday 15-May-2012 tags: competition · business · wireless · trouble · consumers · wireless
Already wobbly T-Mobile took a huge financial hit during the AT&T deal, with customers who didn't want to be AT&T customers fleeing the carrier while many business activities were put into neutral. As is usually the case the lower level employees paid for T-Mobile's bad idea, the company last March announcing at least 1,000 layoffs with more in the works.

As promised, T-Mobile CEO Philip Humm is alerting employees to a new round of layoffs this week, though Humm isn't yet getting specific about the totals for this round of layoffs. From the letter:

We are announcing a new structure that further aligns our costs with our revenue realities, enables teams who support our field organization to act and react with greater speed and effectiveness to customer and market opportunities, and better positions us to return to growth. The new organization required difficult decisions that will impact some of our employees. This week, news will be shared personally with employees and teams who are directly affected by the restructuring.

In a recent insensitive blog post, AT&T's top lobbyist Jim Cicconi tried to blame the layoffs on the blocked deal, ignoring that AT&T would have fired even more employees if the deal had gone through -- and that the deal was idiotic and unnecessary in the first place.

Execs get bonuses for cutting costs. And guess what the biggest cost is - employees. That is the reality of running a business - minimizing costs and maximizing income. And that is what the people running the business are rewarded for.

Just another example of corporate america screwing over the people who actually work because the execs made some bad decisions.

No Bonus?

I thought I read somewhere that Mr Humm didn't get a bonus because of the fallout from the deal and the loss of subscribers?

I think he's getting next years bonus ready after all these laid off employees pay for it.

I hope they make it. They actually have good service here.

We need the competition, and I have good service from them locally.

Re: I hope they make it. They actually have good service here.

So did I - but where will they be next year? I decided to stop stressing on who was gonna be buying out TMO, and just move to another network. I went from an ancient Blackberry Curve 8900 that they charged me 400 dollars for and a two year contract, plus the extra 20 per month for Blackberry junk.

Now I have a modern phone with Android 2.3, paid 220 dollars with tax for the phone, and now 37 dollars and change for my new service.

I won't do a contract phone again - there are too many disruptive technologies to stick to a carrier for even a year. I have also noticed others are sick of the contract idea, as what does it really get you anymore? Used to be that a company would essentially GIVE you a phone to sign up for two years - now, they want you to buy the phone, and then agree to pay them for two years? Why again?

I used to think that prepaid was strange, or the "drug dealer" phone. Now, I see it as a smarter fiscal decision, as I am went from 82 dollars a month, to about 38 dollars per month, and have similar or better service.

Re: I hope they make it. They actually have good service here.

I don't know where you are but here in the Phoenix area the service is terrible if you are trying to use 4G since there's nothing but slow Edge service everywhere. Calls and texting are fine but nothing on my new "4G" Android phone will work unless I'm on wi-fi at home. I don't know how they can get away with all the false advertising about "4G" being fast when all they did was rename the old 3G to "4G" and it's even slower than before. Even if I go to an area of town where I can actually get the fake "4G" it's still just 2.7Mb. That's fast enough for most things to work OK but in lots of areas they have nothing but Edge at 130Kb or so and you can't even check you account status at that speed.
I used to be able to get 3Mb with 3G on my old Blackberry but I can't even get that now!

As do I. I've been with T-Mo since they were VoiceStream (the SIM card I'm still using today has VoiceStream printed on the back). They've always treated me well and the service has been excellent. I hope their lot improves.

I've had tmobile for about 7 years. I've tethered multiple times and have never been questioned/charged for it. But I run aftermarket roms. Do those do anything to hinder tmo from knowing if I am tethering or not? Im just curious really.

There's no hope for you now..

After-market ROM.. aka.. Cyanogenmod, Energy, etc. There's plenty on XDA. They breathed new life into an old Alltel Hero that is now a SIP/Skype WiFi Phone. I also installed CM9 on a Samsung Captivate. Darn thing is freakin' sweet now on Straight Talk.

Just have to wait for them to release CM9 for the D2G. If VZ trashes my data plan, I'm unlocking the GSM side of my phone and switching it to ST.

they do. and the Wifi Calling is free, and the Wifi Hotspot on the phone. I've used them for over 2 years and was NEVER questioned about it either.

Unless you're on a legacy plan. Then it still counts against your minutes. No additional charge to use the feature though (unlike tethering)

there was notice some time ago that it was free for all. My phone at the time even got notice that it was free.

It's unlimited for Even More and Even More Plus and newer plans IIRC. Older plans, which mine is, are not eligible. It's free to use, but still counts against your minutes. Their documentation states as such.

Good...

I wouldn't mind it if they cut out some of their outsourced support. It's a VERY frustrating experience...truthfully, they are probably cutting US based jobs, and sending them overseas.

You do realize a lot of their outsourced support is 99% US Based right? They don't believe in Indian call centers. One of their call centers is actually in Lorain, Ohio

Don't tell T-Mobile employees that, they seem to think their jobs were moved over-seas:

(But that was not my point. AT&T attempted to convince people during their recent attempt to purchase TM that cutting jobs in the US would actually add jobs in the US)

it does when they outsource to US based call centers. They close 1 and open 3 or 4 lower paid jobs.

ATT

I blame this all on at&t. Is at&t really to blame? probably, probably not but either way I think at&t should take the fall for this one. Reason is I have a hunch that T-Mob would fare better if it wasn't for ATT to try to merge with T-Mob, now weather that is true or not is a mystery.

Att will end up helping tmobile in the end with all the free spectrum. The only thing this merger helped in the end was verizon and sprint (Partially)

Re: ATT

It may have helped Spent with customers, but their money problem isn't much better. They're focusing on 3 (4 if you count the Clear LTE network) networks, and are still losing thanks to the Apple iPhone deal. If they were smart they would have never took the iPhone, the small customer count they got was NOT worth the money they needed for their LTE build.

I blame this on their Horrible service and limited coverage. Also once again it proves low price is NOT what consumers will take. Sprint continues to bleed and so does T-Mo.

TMO does NOT want the rural areas. If they did they would have covered those LONG ago. CellCo only has those areas due to mergers and buy outs. Sprint is the only one that really built anything in the rural areas and 360Communications (before Alltel and some of what is still Alltel).

Hell Sprint has even shut off a few of those markets and turned them into "roaming networks.

And actually people do want lower plans. Look at prepaid; their adding customers left and right- and contract customers are actually DOWN over all compared to prepaid and lower priced services. Sprint keeps bleeding due to their $$$ issues. They'll never get that under control if they don't stop spending on things that won't help them now.

I'm not so sure... $4 billion and spectrum goes a long way. What TM _really_ needs to do right now is take action to stop bleeding customers and slowly build their base back up. They need to drop all of the stupid/pointless ads and focus more on what made them good... customer service and inexpensive service.

t-mobile

no one left tmobile for another company because of the att merger I for one just switched from att to tmobile because my bill is 30 dollars cheaper … I wish I could have stayed with att . on tmobile I have 2gb (10$) -unlimited text ($5) and 500 minutes(34)== -$50 and I get up between 6 -9mbs per second in lansing mi......ON ATT I paid 25$ for 2gb 5 dollars for 200 text and 39 for 450 min = 70 dollars plus on att the most I got was 7 mbs on their fake 4g.

Actually a customer of mine did not renew their contract with T-mobile due to the threat of the AT&T merger. 54 lines on that business account.

Re: t-mobile

I agree on this. I was once an AT&T customer and I dropped them because all they wanted to do was screw me over. Had this merger gone through, I would have dropped t-mo like a hot potatoe based solely on the merger. I will never go back to AT&T.

This merger was nothing but bad news to US consumers. And I was torn on it. On the one hand, I hate AT&T as a provider, but I love my T-Mo service (and the commercials are pretty cool to). On the other hand as a stock holder in both companies, it would have made sense. In the end, I would have dumped both stocks and and my provider had the deal gone through because of the really bad experience I had with AT&T as a consumer.

AT&T's only purpose was to either eliminate a competitor or sersiously damage it. In the end, it probably did both. I only wish Deustche Telecom took the US market seriously and would devote the resources to it. If they did, they would be a serious player. For now, I'm content to stay with t-mo. But my brand loyalty is serious hit after this mess....

What planet are you on? I know of a lot of people who ran for the hills during the impending merger with AT&T. I was almost one of them. Two of my closest friends left (one to Verizon, one to Sprint) because they refused to be part of of AT&T. In these very forums there were many people who wrote they were leaving T-Mobile because they didn't want to be on AT&T.

att

Tmobile has been losing customers since 2008, well before att. The reason customers are leaving is due to their slow adoption of data and poor device selection when it mattered.
