Will allow full web browsing on phones next month....
02:39PM Friday Sep 26 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: business · wireless · content · net-neutrality
Gearlog reports that T-Mobile executives may soon allow users to actually browse the Internet via their mobile phones, instead of locking customers into walled-garden purgatory. Currently, T-Mobile has a firmware block in place on most of its feature phones that prohibits running Opera Mini or other alternative browsers. But the carrier is hinting they'll open things up next month, making U.S. services more like their Web'n'Walk solution in the UK, which lets users browse the web from any phone. Actually letting web-enabled phones properly browse the web may not sound like much, but this is an industry that's clearly intent on taking baby steps in order to protect walled garden content and SMS revenues.

IE on my Dash?

How is this different from me just running IE on my T-Mobile Dash? I guess it would be cool to run opera or something else but the IE suits me just ifne I can get to what I need... Slowly

This doesnt appear to apply to you, or anyone else with a smartphone for that matter. This looks to be geared towards those users with the very basic phones that only allow "T-Zones" internet access. I cant honestly say that I would use one of those handsets, however there are likely millions of subs that fall into that category. This is good news for t-mobile customers that have lower cost handsets, as it will greatly enhance their usability.

I already unlocked my Nokia 6133 that I got through T-Mobile. It was easy to do once I got hold of the upgrade file from Nokia directly.

Re: IE on my Dash?

I've unlocked numerous phones and debranded them, but what do you do with a TMobile phone that has UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access)? If you debrand a phone you can't access the VOIP type features of the phone which is a shame, because often you just need a browser to agree to the terms and conditions at your local hotspot or in your hotel room.

Moreover, debranding phones is often not for the faint of heart. On the more than one phone, I've had to hexedit the header to trick the autoupdaters into believing I had a generic phone.

People should also compare this thread with the thread on Bell Mobility and how they have intentionally blocked third party programs from accessing their phone's GPS.

Yeah, this can definitely only apply to those cheap users. I have t-zones for $5/mo and I browse the web on my unlocked w580i using opera mini all the time.

UK or U.S.?

Or both has this T-mobile intranet thing?

This android thing is going to be another bust for 2008. Add it to the list of recent flops: Femtocell, WIMAX, Intel Viiv, BPL, Vista, Mac Air, etc...

Pricing Plan?

I think that will involve some kind of data plan, or charge per kB. I don't think they will actually allow anybody to just browse the internet. I currently use Opera Mini and pay data plan for painfully slow and laggy net.

Re: _KOFF!_

How do you know it's 3G? Via the 3 green lights on the phone?

It looks like the photo was taken on JAN 1 2000.

Re: _KOFF!_

Becuase i was one of the beta testers of this phone in nyc.
this is the 1st 3G phone in tmobile's network.
search gizmodo/engadget or just interenet in general for sony ericson tm506

St Nickless

@verizon.net

It is indeed a sony ericsson tm506, on Tmo running with a full hsdpa 3g speed....obviously you can see it running opera mini.

That isn't a crt, it's a toshiba x205 sli2 laptop.

It's not jan 1 2000 because this thread didn't exist then....and you CAN see the lappy's screen in the background ....right ?

I intentionally leave my digicam on default time and date, I only change it to correct when I need to record something specific.

BTW, it's not a beta phone, they have been on the market for a few weeks.
I own it.

I tested the TM506 today in Chicago. Opera mini works running at 3G speeds. It was pretty nice.

you mean like i've been already doing?

I must be living in a completely alternative universe, because I've been browsing the full Web on TMO for upwards of three years now.

Maybe I just buy the right phones and plans -- you know, the ones that provide what I want?

Confused...

Me too. I had Omnipoint, Voicestream, TMo, for years and used Operamini on my unlocked Nokia and Motorola phones. It wasn't 3G but it worked.

When I switched to ATT I couldn't believe how fast 3G was on a branded phone compared with TMo and an unlocked phone.

Security Issues Fixed?

It looks like they never fixed this problem. I wonder why.

from »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_(USA)
Security issues

An additional security flaw with their voice mail system passwordless login feature exposes the customer's voice mails to third-parties by way of Caller ID spoofing. T-Mobile recommends that this feature not be used but still offers it by default due to customer demand[27].
