T-Mobile HTC Dream: $199, New Data PlansAndroid finally arrives in announcement next week... 01:04PM Thursday Sep 18 2008 by Karl Bodetags: business · wireless · T-Mobile USThe Wall Street Journal has more on next week's T-Mobile launch of the first phone with the new Google Android OS. The new phone will be made official next Tuesday at a T-Mobile press event, and will be in customer hands in mid-October. According to the Journal, the phone will cost $199 with a two-year contract. More interesting perhaps is the fact that T-Mobile will be revealing new, "aggressively priced" data plans for the phone next week as well. Given launch will again highlight the fact that T-Mobile's HSDPA network is only live in select cities, the company today issued a press release proclaiming that their HSDPA service will be live in 21 markets by mid-October. Remember, AT&T took significant heat during the 3G iPhone launch for only offering HSDPA in more than two hundred markets. T-Mobile's release today cleanly breaks down who has, and who can soon expect, HSDPA coverage. Cities currently with service: Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Minneapolis, New York (including northern New Jersey and Long Island), Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio and San Diego. Markets that should have service by mid-October (though we've seen reports that Philly is already live): Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, Philadelphia, Sacramento, San Francisco and Seattle. Markets that will go live by the end of this year: Birmingham, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Memphis and Tampa While that's 27 markets with HSDPA by the end of the year, T-Mobile's late 3G start means Google's much anticipated 3G-centric OS is still going to be debuting on the smallest wireless broadband network of the major carriers, something many users are only going to figure out later this fall. The company claims the slow start wasn't really entirely their fault. After spending $4.2 billion last year to buy 120 1700Mhz licenses from Uncle Sam for UMTS/HSDPA, the company strongly hinted that the government took their sweet time vacating the spectrum. Either way, prepare to welcome your new Android overlords. Related:- First Android Phone Expected Out This Month

| Yep.. All phones have it now.. To many water damaged phones getting returned (I know i've done it in the past)
many have the label burried inside and the only way to find it is to take the thing apar into many pieces. Nextel (Motorola)was good for this.

| I dropped my BlackBerry in the water twice this past summer, while on the lake and swimming. It was both actually in the same lake, and the 2nd time I had to go get it on the bottom, so it took about 2 minutes, because it was dark.
Anyway, I just removed the battery after the first time it fell it, so the 2nd time it fell in it didn't have a battery in it. I brought it home and poured distilled water all over it, and then let it dry for about 24 hours and now it works just as good as new.

| It is called a Liquid Damage Indicator, or LDI for short.
On our phones (TMO) it is usually located in the battery compartment. The water must penetrate the back cover, and then seep underneath the battery before it turns red.
If we process an exchange and get a phone that has a red LDI, we charge $100 to the bill. Sometimes, that's not a bad thing. Imagine if you had a $200 or $300 phone replaced. You KNOW it had water damage and the warranty doesn't cover it, yet you lie you way through. Well, you just bought a reconditioned phone for half or one-third the price!
Anyhow, I am not endorsing that behavior. Sometimes the LDI is pink. That means water vapor penetrated the phone. If someone takes their phone into the bathroom and takes a steamy shower, after a while, the LDI turns pink, and the phone may stop working at 100% capacity. Sometimes if the phone is in your pocket all day, your phone sweats on the inside. Either way, the guarantee does not cover it.
However, if you do find yourself taking a phone out of water, go ahead and pour pure H20 all over it, and dry the parts as best you can. Then dunk them into a container of uncooked rice for a few days. Place in your fridge. The rice removes all moisture! -- ~Dave~

| I was with SunCom, which recently got acquired by T-Mobile, and I went in 3 days ago to renew my plan and get a new phone. I ended up with the Sidekick 2008 (which is great, btw), and the full data plan is $20/mo. Not sure about it's history, having just moved to T-Mobile, but that seems pretty reasonable to me. | |

| 3G In Philly??? I'll believe it when I see it. T-Mobile is setting up their new sites for 3G, but the remainder of their network is still 2G/GSM.
They better start to deploy their 3G/UMTS/HSDPA 3G equipment soon, or I'll be the first to cry FOUL as to their market launches. -- "Follow The White Rabbit....."

| I've been holding out for so long . . . . But I want this bad boy on Verizon's network. I think and J.D & associates agree, Verizon's network is the best cell network in America. Hopefully by the time my contract is over, this thing will be on Verizon's network.
I do have a company issued Sprint Curve, but compared to my gf's Verizon Pearl, it's soooo much slower. I've never been a fan of Sprint, even though I think right now they have the best priced plans. They've always had crappy service in LA.

| Markets vs cities Hopefully people understand the difference between "markets," and cities. The city names mentioned in the article above represent markets and may include multiple towns, smaller cities and other suburbs.
I use AT&T. When I only had a 2G phone, I complained about garbled calls, dropped calls and audio distortion.
With 3G, I get all of the above plus constant handoffs to older 2G and 2.5G networks without warning and for no apparent reason at all.
AT&T did a really sloppy piss poor job in implementing 3G in many of their service areas thus all the complaints. Low spending budgets, inexperienced network technicians, 1900 MHz sites built for 850 MHz spaced towers, and really weak amounts of spectrum have given us in LA a pretty weak introduction. But they still defend their network as the fastest best thing since sliced bread; at least their retail employees do.
I'm all for T-Mobile taking it slow and building the network right from the start and I'll consider making the switch for this phone or other high end 3G phone on their network.

| Re: Late To The Game You don't know what you are talking about. Your "unlimited data plan" from ATT for $15 is the Media Net Unlimited which is only for dumbphones. ATT has their REAL Data Plans priced at $30 A LOT more expensive than T-Mobile's. T-Mobile's dumbphone data plan, T-Mobile Web, is only $5.99 a month A LOT cheaper than the $15 ATT asks for. So basically you're are getting ripped off. And btw you can get free phones from wirefly.com or amazon.com for any carrier, not just ATT. | |
