Network upgrades 'mostly' complete by 2008
(old news - 10:20AM Friday Oct 06 2006)
tags: coverage · business · wireless · bandwidth
As expected, T-Mobile this morning outlined their third generation wireless broadband plans (UMTS/HSDPA on 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz). Covered by all the usual outlets, the company says they'll be spending $2.66 billion over the next two to three years to upgrade their U.S. network (in addition to the $4.2 billion recently spent on spectrum). According to the company, it will be mid-2007 before markets start seeing the speedier GSM/UMTS service, and "most of the work" will be done by 2008. T-Mobile has 23.3 million customers, making them the country's fourth wireless broadband provider. The cable industry, as we discussed yesterday, is actually now the fifth largest.

Hopefully it wont be like edge...

One can only hope this wont be like when they attempted to deploy edge at first and failed miserably. (besides that I'm a very happy tmo customer)

Unhappy T-Mo customer

I don't like t-mobile. My calls are always dropping inside my apartment, this past year. Also, there phones selection sucks. You used to get a good phone with a one year contract. But, now you have to get a 2 year contract to get a good phone.

Re: Unhappy T-Mo customer

Just buy an unlocked GSM phone of your choice. There's no need to support the ridiculous subsidized phone model in the U.S. Wireless carriers should instead focus on giving service discounts like the cable and DSL providers do instead of subsidizing handsets. The sooner folks get wise to this the better IMO.

Waste of Money?

I am a TMO customer and I just hope this will not turn out to be an expensive boondoggle. The lack of customer enthusiasm over 3G services in the rest of the world might make this a very expensive rollout with little payback. I for one am perfectly happy with my 2G service.

T-Mo

T-Mobile has had my business for almost 6 years now. I started with them when they were still Voicestream. Minutes are still the best among the national players.

6+ months for rollout to begin?

As a long time Tmo' customer (6+ years, back when they were voicestream), I am VERY happy to hear that they are finally getting on the 3G bandwagon. I am a bit concerned that it will be almost 2 years for widespread coverage however. In all likely hood Sprint will have started their 4G network deployment in a few markets by then. I also hope that Tmo' goes straight to HSDPA because in 2 years UMTS wont be worth sh*t and they will be WAY behind. Cingular has already stopped deplying the "old" AT&T UMTS (and swtiched to HSPDA) in all their new markets.

Last time I have checked Cingular's HDSPA was still a joke compared to European systems.
It's the classic US PR-driven corporate BS: buzzwords? Checked. Actual speed? Doesn't matter.

I dont think thats true. Many European countries are still using UMTS (the 384k video phone variety), not HSDPA. In fact, Cingular currently has the largest HSDPA deployment in the world.

I can only...

...quote myself from yesterday:

quote:
... for me. I am still hoping a fast rollout but this 1-1.5 years period sounds simply ridiculous.

I would buy a HTC Tytn/Hermes WiFi PDA phone - T-Mobile sells it as MDA Vario II in Europe - but I won't wait another year to see any use of its HSDPA...

No way. If this long rollout period turns out to be true then I'll say goodbye to you and your nice customer support, T-Mobile, despite I'm using it since Clinton times when I've immigrated (used to be called Voicestream).

My only sane choice is Sprint even though I really dislike US-only CDMA phones but their EVDO plan is sooo cheap and truly unlimited, let alone they have HTC Apache (Sprint PPC-6700) WiFi PDA phone...

TMO USA, you did screw up this. I was really patient but another year sounds outrageous when even former Commie Mid-EU countries have multi-megabit HSDPA since early this year... sorry but unless you promise I will have HSDPA here by next March latest, I will wave goodbye and switch.
Now I'll wait 'til the end of this month then call them up to see when can I expect faster speed here in NYC. If I can't get it before next Summer then I'll change provider.

Happy T-Mo Customer

I have been a Tmobile Customer since they took over Voicestream long time ago. Today, I am still a happy customer and very satisfied with their service. Their Edge service fantastic.

Here is a T-Mobile success story: Me and my family moved into a new home. Unfortunately, I had to wait three weeks before I can get my Hi-speed internet service on. I used my T-mobile service via bluetooth connection to access the internet and shared the connection with four computer and some additional proxy software.

I was also able to FTP to my website and upload webpages, my in-home mail and web servers, and my TIVO was able to connect over the network to download program guide information.

Therefore, I will remain a T-Mobile customer until they give me a good reason to leave them. I don't see that happening.

Sounds cool but in reality you had a horrible 3 weeks - I know, I'm an everyday EDGE user and while it's roughly OK for my news reading fetish on my Nokia, it's barely useable on my laptop and would be hopelessly useless for several computers.

Re: I wonder if thier HSDPA can work with Cingular's

They need to use somewhat different frequencies.
T-Mobile UMTS USA = 2100/1700MHz
Cingular UMTS = 850MHz and 1900 MHz

GSM/UMTS phones exist using the following frequencies
GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 (and officially 450MHz in some countries)
UMTS: 850, 900, 1900, 2100/1900MHz and 2100/1700MHz.

The 'primary' UMTS global frequency is 2100/1900MHz
850, 900, 1900 MHz is existing GSM (or cellular/PCS) frequencies.

Re: I wonder if thier HSDPA can work with Cingular's

forgot 1800 mhz and only reason we use 850/1900 is because the fcc gave 900/1800 to diffrent stuff

Re: I wonder if thier HSDPA can work with Cingular's

1800 MHz is used in GSM, but hasn't been set for UMTS
900 MHz has already been tested in Europe for UMTS.
850/1900 devices for UMTS already exist
2100/1900 devices for UMTS already exist
2100/1700 - new, but scheduled.

There's a lot of fragmentation going on.

Re: I wonder if thier HSDPA can work with Cingular's

once some more spectrum is cleared up in the 1800 mhz band which is being used by the mil. right now to the best of my knowledge we might see networks starting to form on par with the world.
