Last Friday a Verizon insider informed us that the company would be expanding their symmetrical FiOS offering into additional areas starting today. The tier has been available in only the NY/NJ/CT tri-state region since October 23.

PA, ME, DE, MD, NH, SC, TX, OR, IN, CA, VA and WA users will be able to order symmetrical 15Mbps for for $64.99 monthly with a one year contract. Customers in MA, FL and RI will get symmetrical 20Mbps for $64.99 monthly with a one year contract. These prices are only if you bundle voice -- standalone is $5 more per month.

While Verizon wouldn't confirm or deny to us that the launch was today, users in our forums say they're able to order the symmetrical service in a number of markets, and it has started showing up on Verizon's website (pdf image grab). We'd assume that an official announcement should be coming shortly from the folks at Verizon, though they may be thinking the launch will generate better PR after the holiday.

Probably in areas that are rich. I can't even get DSL from Verizon due to my distance (20K ft.).

No.

No caps but TOS prohibits servers for residential like all residential TOSs do. Not that I've ever heard of verizon enforcing it. Just stay under 1Tb/month of uploading

And as usual with TOS, there is no definition of what qualifies as a Server (ie: A Daemon such as SMTP or FTP) vs what applications with Server-Like Functionality (BitTorrent, Timbuktu/Remote-Screen-Controllers, etc) are considered Servers. They use a broad claim that any program/application that allows other computers to request information from you is a Server. Thus a P2P program is a Server although it main purpose is to REQUEST files (like a FTP Client) and so is running a Remote-Screen/Controller Client like Timbuktu since it is a Server to the other Client who has logged on to See/Control your Screen.

Verizon enforces it by blocking every useful (standard) port that one might run a service on (25, 53, 80, etc). You can get their commercial package at twice the cost, but they don't offer the quoted high upload speeds for it.

Dont blame the telco's for that, Thank your Local POS Spammers for exploiting those.

Come to Wisconsin Please

I have Road Runner (10Mb/1.5Mb), but the price point of FIOS is awesome.

It's a lot worse when the people down the street from you have it.

They never brought it to my street, and I live in Boston so I could have gotten 20/20.

Re: Come to Wisconsin Please

SAME HERE! Everyone in my town (Westborough, MA) can get FiOS but me. I watched as they wired the long, long street connected to mine. But they won't wire the short street I live on. My only option is Charter cable, where I pay $65/month for a lousy unreliable 5Mbps/512kbps! Death to both of them!!!

Yep! Same here in Hercurock.
It's Comcast or AT&T(SBC) - No chance of anyone else in the forseeable future.
I chose Comcast, for obvious reasons.

No love for business customers

I just called, and I'm not surprised, but this is not available for business customers.

C'mon Verizon, afraid you'll lose your T* customers? Well, yes, that's probably exactly why...doh!

It really doesn't matter about the speed increase, the next story down on the BBR homepage says the Internet will end by 2010 anyway.

I am with you on that! I am paying a little less than what FIOS users are paying and getting 6MB/384k from Comcast.

God forbid if I go over their invisible caps.

Couldn't order yet

Just tried ordering this not once, but twice. And the yearly agreements arn't built into the system yet. I was told that it will be a couple of days before I can get it or anybody for that matter can get it, when the launch was today...

What did you order?

I am trying to upgrade from 15/2 to 15/15 with a 1 yr agreement. Both times I tried, I was told they couldn't select the yearly agreement...

Where in NJ?

Yeah I would love to know. I'm moving to Kearny and I hope I got Fios there. Living with Fios for the last 4-5 months at home was great and I would really hate to have to go back to Big Cable.

Stuck with DSL here.

I'm stuck in Ex GTEarea and it looks like Verizon has no plans to upgrade any of it. If I read right a while back Verizon was trying to sell the Ex GTE area they bought. I want FIOS, I'm stuck with 1.5/384. I live in a trailer court and they provide us with their own cable tv so we can't get Insighttbb 10/1 in here either. I had to argue with a bunch of Verizon DSL techs to get the 1.5/384. One department said no and another said yes. At least 300 trailers in this trailer court and we are stuck with slow arse Verizon DSL.

Just upgraded from 15/2 to 15/15 via the phone in Maryland. It took only five minutes to activate despite being told it'll take three hours.

Fios Sym

I just checked and it's available in my PA Market. 2 years 15/15 @ 64.99. But seriously, why would I need the upload unless i'm going to run a dedicated game server or host my own video site. the 15/2 suits just fine for my needs. My pings in game are not that bad to really complain about with the 15/2.

Speed

What are the advantages of getting 15Mbps upload speeds as opposed to 2Mbps? Just curious

Re: Speed

Because..That speed for some of us is way over due and we can afford it.. 15/15 FTW.. Woot
