Critics say this makes it the most U.S.-like country in Europe

The Parliament in Sweden has passed an extensive wiretapping law allowing the government to monitor all telephone and email contact that occurs within the country’s borders without requiring any sort of warrant. The controversial law raised protests from journalists, lawyers and liberal political parties. Sweden insists that the law, which will become active in January, is designed for the sole purpose of protecting national security and reducing the threat of terrorism. This has caused major companies like Google to say that the eavesdropping plan makes Sweden the European country most comparable to the U.S. in its allowance of the government to infringe upon citizen's privacy.

Never an Excuse

I don't know much about Sweden, and personally I don't really care. In the United States, though, there's never an excuse to violate privacy without a warrant. Every government power must have a check in place. If FBI Agent Joe Blow has the ability to listen into any phone call, or intercept any internet packets whenever he wants to there is a huge problem.

Never heard of the USAPATRIOT ACT, or Bush/NSA/Teleco illegal wiretapping of all telecommunications in the USA? I believe the huge problem is already here.

Re: Never an Excuse

He stated there is never an excuse for it to happen without a warrant and that checks need to be in place. There is a BIG differance between a legal wiretap and as you stated the recent ILLEGAL wiretaps.

The bigger problem is those that don't know about it like texans20.

You can't fight something if you don't even know it exists.

But 50% of americans didn't vote last time, so 50% thought it wasn't important enough or thought it didn't matter or worse, didn't have an opinion. The ones that vote did picked bush. America is up the creek.

It's OK. Bush isn't running again.

There is now. If the Government says it is ok, well, it must be ok.

How did it/we come to this...

Such a few years from the end of the Cold War to adoption of the same intrusive surveillance that was characteristic of the communist states we opposed. What a victory for the "free" West...

One word, apathy. Americans have become apathetic to not only our own plight, but the plight of others, causing a numbing effect. And it's fascism that the U.S. is headed towards.

Give me a break

Cause now the US and Sweden are the only 2 countrys in world doing this? Google has some nerve after agreeing to filter searches from such countries as China.

Google did nothing but abide by the laws of the land they want to do business in. It would be no different if you wanted to open a store in your city and had to seek their approval (permit) to do so.

So they'll freely give the info asked for from the Swedish Gov't? What makes them think they can call the kettle black?

Yes, Google is a hypocrite. They whine and yell about privacy while collecting info about everybody and in countries that demand they give up info(like China) they bend right over. But let the US or Sweeden have laws that ask the same thing they cry like babies.

Re: Give me a break

Google == Corporation.
Government != Corporation.

You can choose not to participate in business related ventures with Google. You don't have that choice with the FBI/NSA/DHS. They have access to information Google doesn't. If keeping the FBI from abusing my personal information were as simple as the decision NOT to install a browser toolbar that would be pretty cool.

Big Brother Is Watching You

This is frightening that the scandinavian countries, the freest societies in the world, are getting into the warrantless wiretapping business.

The old ones are getting scared they are or could lose power so in desperation they try this.

My bet is in ten years this will work itself out as few of the real strong armers are blasted into worm meat.

Sweden Adopts Extensive Wiretapping Law . . . duh

Does anyone think the lobbyists from the USA that are funded and supported by this government would let a modern euro friendly law get passed?

And you know the first people to be caught will be copyright infringers that will be accused of funding terrorist like activity.

That was my thought - this is an end run around the copyright problem the diaRIAA has been leaning on countries who have signed onto the Berne Convention to correct.

Sweden: a study in contrasts

Sweden is the last place I would expect something like this to go through. They make better political decisions than any country on earth.

... so it's weird they would pass this legislation.

Sweden has a buttload of Muslims, and many of them are really angry that they are not 6'5" like everyone else. Many years ago, they had a Turk shoot up a club because they wouldn't let him in. This is before all the angry people from Iraq started flooding in (yes, I know it's apples and oranges, but in Sweden, anyone darker than ivory is considered black).

I'm not sure that they don't have anything to worry about.

Still, it's uncharacteristic of them to allow this kind of intrusion into private life.

death of TPB

Lets start counting the death of The Pirate Bay. One of its owners will say something accidentally into his cellphone one day and get the evidence needed for the govt to convict.

ACTA

Wait until you see Canada adopt this same policy as well as the same french 3 strikes your out ....

ALL part of the new communist er corporate oligarchy control measure act.

Since the cold war , i noticed this , now corporations don't have to be nice to us. When will they get that democracy and freedom have no boundaries, and that WE WILL FIGHT THEM TOO.

Perhaps i should remake my new game about the new war coming.
THE CORPORATE WARS....Where they take over the world and we have to fight to take it back.

1st - they pay off politicians to get more power and then create situations where gov'ts can't afford armies ( like iraq) and then make private armies for hire. In time these private armies become larger and larger until they are the only armies. Then get control of all the media outlets ( yup a take form the nazi book of propoganda, have a look at who owns the news paper and tv station )

2nd - Then one day they get new laws that give them total control. They move there armies into every state of every nation. Have decent, and you are rounded up and disappear(like the secret US black ops terror bases).

3rd - A small cadre of secret people start the take back of planet earth. Using hacker technology and stealth they begin an underground movement that like the rebel alliance grows until they are able to have open war.

DO YOU THINK THIS ISN'T happening, and what stage are we at?
If you say 1st , you are wrong, they already have control of our lives and our politicians. Look at the 50,000 private soldiers in iraq. DO you think that is just the beginning.
(haha this conspiracy brought to you by chronoss media a division of up your butt copyright and patent law)

Want to see how evil how linux users are about to get sued?

USA patent law and bankrupt company will spin off assets to become an ip troll and sue the crap out of anyone , with nothing too lose they can afford to go for it.

The new canuck copyright law and later the secret leak of ACTA are proof there is a conspiracy. IF they can't have this in the open then you have to wonder why.

Makes me remember a lil hacker that gave me some files once about DRM , seemed odd that the center of 15 companies development was a shoe company , then i remembered the irony of max well smart. YA that's too ironic.

Seems many companies you think are nice , are just pr until the day they don't have to be.

Oh and its nice to see that the faircopyright for canada chapter of eastern ontario i run that a recent former chair of the terrorism board is now a member of our chapter.

YA that's next , if your downloading music yoru a terrorist.
I have sent him a PM and he seems nice enough.
Of course thats spin and hes now doing work in minister verniers area. Hopefully this younger lad ...gets it.
Will we get it.

Copyright is supposed to be a right? Rights if abused can be taken away. Also it must overall serve the public in the end. YOUR need for profit is trumped by ( at least in democratic states) societies need to advance technologically and culturally.

Think about it.

Google makes me laugh

They are one of the companies, along with Yahoo! that continually sends the Chinese gov't the browsing/search habits of IP's from their country.

They Google along with Yahoo! has also modified content when a request comes from any IP located in China, redirecting them to other websites and state run propaganda websites.

If there is a profit involved I guess it is "ok" for google.

I agree. It is time for products that connect to the internet to start encrypting communications by default.
