It's exactly like games from the internet boom that all used different online mulitplayer networks that died in the boom. I have all these old games where MP doesn't work now.
I agree with the orginal poster. I want the actual game on a disc that I can use wherever whenever I want. I don't want to have to use an internet connection, I don't want to be unable to play because of some Steam screw up, and I don't want to be unable to play because Steam no longer exists.
Also to the people talking about hacks, they'll be out in minutes. It's a mod to a game that already has plenty of hacks for it.
Also to whoever said it was nice of Valve to have these servers and not make us pay monthly. These are not servers you can play on, these are to purchase the game through. Best Buy does not charge you monthly to keep their stores open, Valve shouldn't either. It's not being nice, it would be stupid to charge monthly. | |

Look at Westwood Online, it's gone because they were bought over by EA. I've paid for my Tiberium Sun game, and I cannot play it online because there's no more master server to give me a list of available games. | |

Also, vALVE is far from being in financial trouble. They are alive and kicking in their Kirkland office and continue to develop quality products that generate revenue. After all, what other companies have you seen successfully throw off the shackles of an overbearing distribution agreement and still walk away profitable?
Yeah, keep those doomsday comments to yourself unless you have proof to show they are "going under". Troll.

| Sorry but I found Valve (Half Life 2) distribution model cumbersome and lethargic.
The buyer is required to have a fast Broadband connection.
The buyer gets 6 CDs to install from (last I looked, the Gold package didn't include a DVD but was supposed to).
And after a lengthy installation, you must then download more updates. If the server(s) aren't overloaded as it was, its rather arrogance to curb piracy at the "legit" buyer's expense (and time).
Personally, M$ and Sony licensed game companies will take over the gaming market. Only High-end PCs and limited games will be available to PC users. The marketshare will be the console users and their online gaming. Its already beginning. I recommend a BUY of EA stock...

Auto update in games is great but for reinstalls and new installs nothing beats a CD. Poor dial-up users will be downloading for weeks before they hit 100%

| get a clue most steam haters are ignorant of the future. ive been saying this since steam 1st debuted with the CS 1.6 beta: STEAM is the future of software distrubution.
sure youd benefit from a broadband connection, but what OTHER internet protocol/platform WOULDNT benefit from broadband??? BBR linked a news article this week stating that 67ish% of Americans are online, while 50% of them are on broadband. thats more than enough market share (especially considering most gamers have had broadband for a while) to cater to broadband-only content. and STEAM still works with dialup anyway. (dialup users can always purchase the retail games, or DL via steam once and backup everything to DVD/CDROM/HDD and only worry about updates instead of the 5gig+ full downloads every time)hell, LOTS of other companies, sites, even PC GAMES now REQUIRE broadband. i feel for those on dialup, but the world moves on whether you're trotting along-side or not.
as it is with most issues, there are those that fully understand and those that don't want to. STEAM had a rocky start, Friends currently doesnt work (getting fixed in STEAM v3 which is slowly being implemented into every client), but it's been pretty solid since. it was the 1st major distributed software network launch and OF COURSE it would have bugs.
and yes, valve has the ability to throttle their bandwidth "on the fly" as they said. they puchased more for the DoD:S launch but i'm 100% positive they could add more if need be with minimal impact on players. and if you've preloaded DoD:S already, why do you care??
