Instead of less expensive, previous Wi-Fi plan

Concerned that a citywide Wi-Fi network wouldn't be future-proof enough, officials in St. Paul, Minnesota are instead mulling over a new fiber to the home plan. The Star Tribune dubs fiber "the much speedier sister of Wi-Fi connections" (more like godfather, but who cares), noting that to launch and maintain a fiber network would cost $296 million over a 30-year period. The Wi-Fi network they were considering would be up to $27 million over 20 years. The plans are still in the early stages, and there's no solid explanation for how the city plans to pay for all this bandwidth. Nearly a third of St. Paul residents can't get DSL service.

It'll never happen

somewhere along the way St.Paul or the residences will blow it away besides wouldn't this mean tearing up a lot of streets or anything like that?

But maybe they already have a bunch of fiber installed but 296 million over 30 years is a long time

Naw, at&t, comcast, and another group installed fibre and coax into our neighborhood and they only dug up small parts of the road. There is a drill and cable puller that they use to lay that stuff under ground, apparently with a conduit for protection. It is interesting how they can control and guide that drill head accurately in three dimensions. Beats tearing up all the streets.

Much of St. Paul utilities are over head. Tearing up of the streets? Like that would stop anything in the Twin Cities area... with that, I give you Light Rail.

But I agree.. St. Paul is too reserved.. there is something correct in this story.. the 30 years. It will be 30 years before they decide it's time for the big F.

Not to mention, St. Paul... right in Comcast's back yard!

20 years?!?!?

So they have a 20 years plan for the wi-fi network that will be obsolete and need to be completely changed out in 2 - 4 years....I wonder who pulled that amortization schedule out of their a$$.

At least they are moving in the right direction, maybe they will even run fiber to nodes and provide the last mile with wi-fi/wi-max as they roll out the FTTH. This would probably be a feasible plan where results can be seen quickly and plans to roll out to fiber would already be underway as the wi-fi life cycle burns out.

Re: 20 years?!?!?

I believe that's the cost of setting it up and then running it for 20 years.
I hope

$296 million multiplied by ?

Please tell me they didn't get the $296 million number from Becca Vargo Daggett, a staunch muni broadband advocate with the left wing Institute for Local Self-Reliance.

It's pretty much a given that government projects almost always end up costing much more than initially claimed and that advocacy groups often fudge the numbers in favor of their position. If Becca is claiming $296 million, chances are the actual costs would be closer to $500 million.

Why they are doing this....

Oh, there's just SO MUCH more room in $296 million than in $27 million for political contributions, consulting contracts, kickbacks, and other forms of graft!
