Sprint Pitches iPad Case To Promote Overdrive
$99 with 2 year contract, and $60 a month...

Sprint doesn't have AT&T's exclusive agreement to offer the 3G version of Apple's iPad so they're doing something a little different: marketing Sprint's $99 Overdrive service as the perfect accessory for Apple's Wi-Fi-only incarnation of the iPad. Sprint's Overdrive device is a dual mode (EVDO/Mobile WiMax) portable hotspot that will let users connect the iPad (and up to four other mobile devices) to Sprint's networks wherever they go. Sprint's bundling the unit with a new iPad case for those who don't want to spring for the extra $130 to get the iPad 3G. Sprint's Overdrive service is $99 if you sign a two year agreement, and includes unlimited 4G data and 5 GB of 3G data for $59.99 per month. AT&T meanwhile is charging $14.99 for 250 MB of data or $29.99 for unlimited iPad access to the AT&T network (neither of those options requires a contract).

why new plan?

Still don't understand why the same data plan you pay for on the iPhone can't be used.

If you can fit your SIM into the micro-SIM slot, you probably can.

Re: why new plan?

The iPhone/iPad SIM's are purposely not compatible. Since AT&T shelved or indefinitely delayed plans to allow iPhone tethering, the best option if you have both devices would be to run the iPhone jailbreak and tether via wifi or bt.

This is a strong offering from Sprint for those needing to share with multiple devices and/or need faster speeds. With things changing as fast as they are, I'd probably consider paying more to not get locked in for two years though.

I thought about getting the wifi version and tether it using the iPhone until I heard about the wifi issues.

Re: why new plan?

I picked up a WiFi only iPad with the intention of grabbing that new 3G/4G HTC EVO phone that Sprint is releasing this summer. Supposedly the specs on that phone indicate that it can be used as a MiFi router. Since I will always have my phone with me, I figured I could just connect my iPad through this device when I decided to haul it around with me outside of a typical WiFi area.

Exactly. Although now the reports that the iPad is having issues in warm weather makes me want to wait for the next run even more.

Or if you don't want to wait for the HTC EVO phone from Sprint, you can get a Palm Pre, which doesn't need any jailbreaking or rooting in order to enable the mobile hotpot app that Verizon includes for free.

Then you won't need anything other than your iPad and your Pre.

Ok ,so it technically violates the Sprint contract terms, but I haven't read of anyone being called out on it.

The new HTC EVO phone can be used to connect up to 8 WiFi devices, so if I had this new phone, it would even be better than a Pre in this regard. I would still only need my phone and the iPad, and this is a completely legitimate tethering option, with potential for Wimax speeds in certain areas.

The problem is, I am only 10 months into my 2-year contract with my BlackBerry Tour, and I plan on having to pay 1 year of my ETF to switch over to the HTC when it comes out. If I am going to make this kind of a commitment, I'm not going to do it for the Pre.

I hear ya. Haven't tried connecting more than 2 devices through my Pre yet, so I don't know how many it can handle. You're right on the Wimax portion though.

Re: why new plan?

I took a close look at the Pre before deciding on upgrading from my BB Curve to the Tour. It was tough choice, but in the end my familiarity with the BlackBerry products won over the Palm's new hardware design.

That new HTC EVO is actually just as powerful, and a lot more versatile than my iPad. I had a chance to play around with my friend's HTC Nexus One and was very impressed with the build quality and the screen. It was this hands-on experience that ultimately got me excited about the new Sprint HTC device when I first heard about it.

Would wait for nextgen pads

Feel sorry for those suckered into the limited use of iPad and Apple approved content.

HP is coming out with Slate that will view virtually every form of digital content that exists (real OS), but it is on a one-year old Atom, so only 5 hour battery life. Current gen gets 8+hours yet a new dual cord Atom is coming that draws even less power. Should be awesome for pads/slates based on a real OS.

Apple made a mistake basing the pad on iPhoneOS rather than MacOS. But then they couldn't sucker you into their controlled content.

Re: Would wait for nextgen pads

Agreed. The Slate looks very nice. About the same size I believe, but the fact that it does real multi-tasking on a real OS (wish iPad had Mac OSX). Also, since I'm a Palm Pre owner (and also a future HTC EVO 4G owner), I will tether the Slate WITHOUT jailbreaking.

Honestly, I'm always near a plug. Battery life doesn't really worry me. But dual core Atom would be sweet.

Ditto. I'm looking for a tablet/pad like device with a real multi-tasking OS that allows me to install whatever I like. (Slate, Courier, or just about any other Win 7 tablet that will hit the market soon). If the iPad ran OS X, I would have picked one up by now.

I'm also a Pre owner and I'm torn between Getting an HTC EVO 4G in the summer OR waiting for a Win 7 mobile phone when they're released at the end of the year.

I have a Pre too. If Palm doesn't announce a phone with killer specs by June, I'll probably go EVO as well and tether WiMAX that way. KC is getting WiMAX this summer and is already turned on in several parts of metro.

I like my netbook as I prefer a keyboard but am interested in trying the slate format as long as it has a real OS. Will wait for nextgen though, which in techie world is only 6 months away.

What I don't understand, PC people, is if you're a PC anyway, what in the world do you care about apple?

What I find completely dis-ingenious are the people that CONSTANTLY bitch, moan, complain, and gripe about what apple is doing when most people have no desire to ever even buy apple.

Why does apple have to be more like PC? Apple does what apple does to play to their own market and there is clearly a group of users out there that enjoy what apple makes - so back off already.

Personally, I am a PC. I DO have an iPhone and an iMac as part of a massive amount of PCs in my inventory. However, mac is what it is.

Ever think that some Apple users need a device that is simple for their limited abilities? If you're not an apple person, then I don't see why it matters if the iPad uses the iPhone O/S and not the Mac o/S; it's clear these people aren't going to even buy an iMac or Macbook anyway.

In the end, what I'm trying to say is "who cares"... apple has a market, they have a group of people that enjoy the product, it's NOT Microsoft which many people are equally as fed up with. The only difference is that you don't hear Mac people going out of their way to constantly slam Windows as you do Windows people slamming apple.

The fact you say apple is suckering anyone into anything says one thing.. .you're insulting the user and in the process, doing so in order to somehow make yourself feel and sound better for it.

Who really cares if the iPad sucks.. you're not going to buy one anyway and I really doubt you ever would if they did things any different anyway. (And if they did, you're most likely be seeing an apple product being more like the PC, so what's the point to begin with?)

Apple has made no mistakes... they're doing quite well for themselves.

Re: Would wait for nextgen pads

No complaints or bitching... just stating Apple should have based the pad on MacOS instead of the limited iPhoneOS. That's a very very reasonable statement. It's not a Mac vs. PC thing, it's a limited content vs. unlimited content thing.

People who are about to purchase an iPad should be aware that it is limited to Apple provided content whereas they could get a slate that can open virtually every digital content that exists. The point is that MacOS could also open just about any type of content.

Apple has a 'right' to do as they please, but I don't think it was wise for consumers as it's really about product entrapment. It's fair to discuss that.

Re: Would wait for nextgen pads

If you're a former mac developer, then you should know something.. Apple likes their price points up higher.. why would they base the iPad on the Mac O/S and sell a device for so little vs. basing what is essentially an iTouch on a larger scale. (aka Netbook, which is in all sense a scaled down laptop as well, not meant to be a laptop replacement.. think of the word NET in netbook.)

Apple isn't stupid in this. They had a direction that the iPad was going to go and it went there. My point is that many people are trying to take the iPad and make it into more than what they developers intended it to be in the first place.

Personally, I think the netbook was over driven to begin with. In many cases, the netbook is what it is.. it's an underpowered, under peripheraled device that was designed to surf the web, chat, send and receive email and post twitter/facebook updates, nothing really more. I just think that too many people are trying to make the iPad into something it isn't nor was it ever intended to be. As long as the iPad does email, chat, plays music as advertised, has an internet browser, and other basic functions, it's doing it's job. The apps are just extra. And, tell me, how much does an "app" cost for Windows? I know some of those "apps" cost hundreds of dollars to boot.

Tell you what you go ahead a get your Microsoft slate. Spare us the bitching about a product you have never owned, or will ever own. I wish I could make mistakes like Apple has with the iPad, it is reported they have sold somewhere around 700,000 of them so far, and the projections are something like 3 million before the year is out. How many Microsoft slates do you suppose will sell, I'll bet it does not sell anywhere near the number reported for the iPad.
I look upon an iPad as I do my Touch an access device. I really fail to see the restrictions when you have 10's of thousands of podcasts, over a 100,000 App's, granted there are a lot of junk app's but still there are enough good ones that I really don't feel the restrictions.

Apple will sell many. Many of the millions of Followers will consume what Apple feeds them. Again, just saying, I feel sorry for the *users* who get suckered into this, not Apple. They are brilliant at creating a cult following and they do product entrapment like no one has done before. Kudos to them.

The only point I was making is that what is better for *consumers* is to be able to load any content out there. MacOS would allow that. Apple didn't want to do that because they want control in order to sell content through iTunes, not do what is best for consumers. This isn't about Apple vs PC, it's about iPhoneOS vs MacOS and other OSs that can access unlimited content.

Do you want unlimited content or very limited content (iPad probably only able to access a few percent if that of all digital content that exists). MacOS would've allowed that. Just informing those who are considering iPad as many do not realize this.

Re: Would wait for nextgen pads

Based on the popularity of the Iphone and the Ipad obviously people do want limited content. They care much more about ease of use than options

I am a computer programmer, so for a pseudo laptop replacement, the iPad is way to limited for me, but I have an iPhone, and yes there are a few things I wish it could also do, but they aren't deal breakers, The interface is extremely slick and easy to use, and completely reliable, I dare anyone to try to run HP Slate non stop for months without a reboot like my iPhone does. When it comes down to it for a phone I prefer the ease of use and slickness of the iPhone to a more extensible android, winmo, or blackberry.

But I admit that the iPad is great for the vast majority of people, I would say probably 85% of the people I know never use a computer for anything other than online banking, web surfing, facebook and youtube, these are things that can all be done on the iPad and those users are for who the iPad is really designed.

Me, I'm interested in and android based pad that can run any software someone writes for it, including me, but through the use of my iPhone I understand the appeal of the iPad to the majority of users, sometimes I think us computer geeks need to escape from our narrow view of technology and watch how normal people use devices.

Dude... really! GET OVER IT! No one is being suckered into it.. stop acting like people who don't chose Microsoft aren't intelligent enough to make choices. People who use anything apple know exactly what they're getting into.. no one is "sucking them" into anything. No need to feel sorry for them as they make their own choices.

If there is a "cult" following with Apple, then what do you call the crap following MS? MS sold VAPOR WARE when it first came out and they've been incredibly predatory on consumers since day one.. what do you have to say for that?

Get off this apple kick as them being bad.. people know what they're getting; there is no secret. I also find it ironic that YOU sit here talking about what is "best for consumers"... you're not an authority for everything that is right.. maybe these millions of apple happy folk are fine with what apple provides to them. You're bordering on almost psychotic religious colt here with your ways... you're starting to sound like a Christian over in Iran telling them how bad it is to be a Muslin becuase your Christian views are better.

WHO CARES what content can or can't be loaded.. to the people that have them, it's clear that what ever content is available to them is enough. You also act like people that use them don't have enough content TO load.. the funniest thing is that Safari doesn't restrict any websites so it sounds like there is plenty of "content" to be had..

I don't see where your "unlimited content" argument holds a single drop of water.

As soon as you, and everyone else, stops this cheer leading on what is better for people, the better you'll feel. Stop this mission you're on about what's right or wrong. If you're never going to buy an apple product, which you've made very clear, then why are you spending so much time arguing against it unless you have some need to be right about something? We get it.. Apple isn't for you... go on your merry way and get something MS.. maybe you can then spend a lot of time with other MS people bitching about how it crashes so much, or their programs cost so much, or how ridiculous their activation security is.. or a number of other things that piss of MS people.

And again, I own 20 different Windows based computers from XP, Vista, 7, and media center on desktops to Server 2003 and server 2008 boxes... I also own an iPhone and a MacBook Pro... seriously.. WHO CARES! The nice thing about living in this country is you're free to do as you please.. These so-called mindless people you are trying to make some people out to be DON'T EXIST! No one needs to be saved.. seriously.. get over it. You're CLEARLY just here to tear down apple and no one really cares.. you're also not going to change apple, nor any of these mindless people from buying them.

I am no apple fan in the sense that I need to be a fan, but one thing is clear, you find FAR more people going away from an MS based product to an apple product more than you do see people going the other way.. maybe apple is doing something right.

Re: Would wait for nextgen pads

I have been assembling my own computers for decades I pre-date Microsoft. My over arching motto with computers is "You don't learn if you don't burn" I have destroyed more then one computer system doing this. Having said this there are times when I need a vacation from messing around with a PC. It is very relaxing to have a device that I know will work every time, I don't have to tweak it, configure it, drill down through 10 feet of menus to do something, mess around in the registry, or anything else. When I am on the verge of taking my Ruger No.1 Tropical Rifle .375 H&H to my current PC I instead pull out my iPod Touch and relax with an auto book, a podcast, or some music with a device that does not get in the way of it's own use.

.. to be honest, is why I have my MacBook... sometimes I don't need to program the world.. sometimes I just want to surf the web, email, and chat and for that, the Mac is great.. so is my iPhone.. Personally, I don't think one is any better than the other.. I think one is just better for the situation at hand... that's all. I know all of Apple's weak points and I know all of the Windows weak points... they both have them. For me, I can fit either, depending on what I'm doing.

One thing I WILL say I DO love about my MacBook Pro is the gestures on the touchpad... makes sitting there with a laptop on your lap in the chair so much easier to use when you've got a drink in one hand and your hand on the... pad.

Never mentioned Microsoft. Was generally pointing to MacOS vs iPhoneOS. Just saying MacOS would allow opening most any type of content, iPhoneOS allows Apple to control what content you use. Not many who buy into iPad realize that, which is why I called it being suckered int a trap (still hold that point because that is literally the result).

Since Apple decided against MacOS, an Intel-based pad/tablet is the only way to not have controlled content, whether you load Microsoft, Android/ChromeOS or Linux.

My premise is that it sucks people are allowing to let themselves be suckered into controlled content, supporting that model because others are attempting it now.

Re: Would wait for nextgen pads

I really didn't understand the marketing strategy of Apple until I visited an Apple store for the first time. While there I saw a different world from the geek universe here where people who only wanted their computers to work, who looked upon their machines more as companions. I tend to look at my PC's as evil demons from hell they are a machine to use, abuse, destroy, and throw away. With my iPod Touch it is different, I have never had a personal piece of electronics like it. I have had other MP3 players but they where just something that played music. When I got the Touch the way it worked, how it felt in the hand, how looked it touched something with in me. It is rare for me to have this feeling with an piece of engineering and never with any kind of computer. Apple has not suckered me in at all I am in the category of "been there done that" X10. But I do recognize a superbly engineered and integrated device..

So MacOS wouldn't have met your needs? It would've had Apple design that is geared towards less techie consumers as well as allowed access to near unlimited content. You guys keep making this a PC argument but I'm saying iPad should be MacOS based so that Apple doesn't control the content.

No it is a matter of who cares about MacOs, Window 7, Linux, Solaris whatever. If I have a device that runs it fine, if not fine, I have used so many OS's over the years that what a computer is using is almost beside the point as long a it functions and I can find drivers for what ever I want to run on it great. Of course some run better then others and if they irritate me they get trashed.

Apple is one of the now rare companies who's products are controlled by one person. His vision rules. There used to be automobile companies like this. Ferrari, and Enzo Ferrari, Porsche, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, and then Dr. Ferry Porsche
are two such companies. These three people's had a vision of what the cars with their names should be like and directed their engineers to produce such cars. Apple is the same way. This can be very polarizing you either buy into this vision or you don't. I think Apple is a island of difference in a sea of PC copy cats. PC's bla, Lab tops all the same, Netbooks flimsy cheap piece of crap, trying to sell tablets for 10 years. M$ we have most of the market so we don't have to clean up this bloated over coded, patched up piece of crap because we own you, so there.
