Sprint adds 3 cities, Cingular hits CT
(old news - 09:54AM Wednesday Jan 31 2007)
tags: coverage · business · wireless · bandwidth
Sprint announced yesterday that they were expanding their Revision A EVDO upgrades to three new markets: South Florida, Portland (Oregon) and Puerto Rico. Sprint says the EVDO Revision A upgrades should be completed by the third quarter. The company also announced the Novatel EX720, Sprint's first EV-DO Revision A capable ExpressCard, would go on sale in February. Cingular, meanwhile, announced they invested some $86 million in their Las Vegas area network, and they launched their 3G HSDPA service in Connecticut. According to Cingular, they now offer wireless broadband in 165 cities, including 73 of the top 100 markets in the country.

Sprints commercials are false.

If you listen closely to Sprints latest lies...er commercials, they claim that Cingular doesnt have coverage in certain cities of which in fact it does.

Sprint can't compete on speed, so they lie instead.

Re: Sprints commercials are false.

Sprint's speeds are still great, as is the latency. When I was in HSDPA cities like Columbus, the data card would drop down to EDGE repeatedly going down the road. When you're driving through the heart of Columbus, this shouldn't happen. Even with the HSDPA, I wasn't impressed. Nor was I impressed with Cingular's data cards not allowing me to data roam. And what commercial is this? I think we both know there would be a lawsuit if Sprint was blatantly lying about Cingular (in the same way Cingular does about the fewest dropped calls).

Re: Sprints commercials are false.

its the commercial where they have two goobers sitting next to one another and the sprint guy says yes to every city they mention access in and the cingular guy says no to every one.

I suspect Cingular will be issuing a statement to Sprint to either pull or edit the commercial to reflect the truth.

It would have happened already if it were false

Re: Sprints commercials are false.

The commercial compares Cingular's HSPDA to Sprint's EVDO and the Cingular guy saying "no" is saying that they don't have HSPDA in that town...not that there's no coverage, but they don't have their high-speed broadband.

they have HSDPA in some of the towns mentioned. Towards the end they start blurting them out so fast it is hard to hear them, but they are there.

Personally, I don't care.
Cingular still doesn't really have much coverage in Los Angeles (San Fernando valley = Los Angeles) , Denver and Minneapolis.

Sprint, on the other hand, may have more 3G coverage, but their network is so small, that I'd be roaming most of the time. Do handoffs between Sprint and Verizon work without dropping ? I don't think so.

Each have their advantages and disadvantages, and both companies have their PR spin doctors out to promote their company at the others expense. It'll be a while before Sprint stops bleeding Nextel customers, so you may find some good deals while Sprint is hurting. I'd personally rather go to T-Mobile.

cant drop a call you cant make. Cingular is terrible coverage in this area. there is only VZ evdo, but IMHO print has the best service in this area. Sprint is horrible, god forbid you have a technical or customer service problem.

Huh? Cingular data roams...if it's anybody with limited data roaming these days, it's Sprint (who data roams on Alltel but on no one else in the US.)

Re: Sprints commercials are false.

Cingular's data cards? I don't think so. I had one. I tried. It didn't work. My Centennial phone had a full signal, Cingular had none, and they have an agreement with one another. Of course, Cingular probably singled me out to not allow data roamin on my specific account. On another note, Sprint also roams on Verizon and US Cellular.

I used to work for BellSouth and knew plenty people which "edge" and UMTS cards.... EVDO is WAY faster then "edge" and UMTS meets EVDO. Doesn't exceed it. and BTW cingulars voice quality blows chunks.

If what you say is true, why isn't cingular taking them to court for false advertising? Oh wait.. maybe cingular has a presence but nothing that can match Sprints speed.. but then again, maybe that's all markets they both reside in.

What an understatement

Sprint seems to understate its upgrades. Perhaps their press release mentions 3 cities, but my dinky little town of about 3,000 just had a new tower turned on last night with Revision A. Sprint's really starting to impress me.

Re: What an understatement

It would be nice if Burlington, VT, the largest population center in Northern New England, even saw Rev.0 speeds from Sprint.

And forget Cingular -- not here, so iPhone for us, either...

Verizon on the other hand...

Says they have EVDO rev.A deployed Now.

An A card arrived today and I plan to put it to a thorough test.

More on this story as it develops...

Sprint vs. cingular

Sprint covers over 200 million with EVDO Rev0/A and 96m with RevA. Cingular barely covers 100 million with HSDPA.

Sprint Rev0 is much faster than Cingular and RevA is even faster. I'm able to get nearly 2.5Mbps with Sprint RevA at times. My Cingular card can rarely get 1.2Mbps. When I had Rev0, it would still do

Get real Cingular fans. Sprint is completely blowing them out of water in terms of broadband coverage and performance. I've used both.

Re: Sprint vs. cingular

I'm no fan of either... but I'm not worried about 3G service when Sprint hardly has any native 2G service here either (Los Angeles area), I'd spend too much time roaming on Verizon and dropping calls in between.

Central California, Sprint covers 101 with EVDO (low population SLO to Salinas)
Cingular covers larger cities - Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, Stockton

Sprint doesn't have any native coverage in the desert (Mojave to Barstow) or consitant coverage between Castaic and Gorman and Barstow to Las Vegas.

Re: Sprint vs. cingular

We're talking data not voice. In data, you don't drop calls, it just switches to roaming. And BTW, Sprint roams on Alltel EVDO, which is also a huge area in South and Midwest. Sprint also roams on Verizon 1xRTT.

Re: Sprint vs. cingular

I agree... however, if I'm on 1x streaming radio (www.fmtalki.com / Tom Leykis), and go into the Antelope Valley desert, or up into the Central valley, will data service automatically roam, or dropout and require a restart ? Will Sprint roam on Verizon EVDO ?
Cingular will also roam on Alltel GSM for voice and data, however, I don't expect to have to roam much on I-5 in So-Cal, or I-15 on the way to Las Vegas (never dropped out or roamed)

This is old news....

There were parts of CT that had HSDPA 2-3 months ago.
