Do we know you?
(old news - 05:45PM Monday Feb 06 2006)

Fon, the freshly funded company that aims to create a business model by turning your Wi-Fi router into a paid or free hotspot, may not be making friends, according to Wi-Fi Networking News. DSL provider Speakeasy is a little irked that Fon has been hinting in news releases that they've got a vague relationship with the provider. Speakeasy has their own Wi-Fi Netshare initiative that likely doesn't mesh well with Fon's plans to piggyback on their bandwidth.

Do you?

Blame Speakeasy? I would be miffed too. But, if it's in the TOS that allows this, what can be done? If it's against the TOS, it's your butt on the line.

If it's not in the TOS yet, I'm sure they will include it pretty soon... The business model Fon has simply isn't going to work...

I don't blame Speakeasy at all. They don't seem to be at odds with the service, but the fact that FON stated they have reached agreements with Speakeasy that do not exist according to Speakeasy.

And this is where the problem lies, we really don't know the whole story.

Just found this.

"The largest concern we have received from our very smart board of advisers is how receptive ISP's will be to FON. Although it's not illegal to share you connection many ISP's have restrictive End User License Agreements (EULA) that prevents you from sharing with anyone outside your household. There are some exceptions to the rule, for example Speakeasy has a very open policy and even goes as far as to encourage FON users to sign up for their service. There are many ISP's that are similar to Speakeasy but the difficulty is with the major incumbents and broadband cable companies that most people use."

Re: Do you?

This is a self invented story by DSLR.

Clearly sharing any ISP's connection is going nowhere.

Move on.

I think the issue is that Fon is using Speakeasy's name in their releases and promoting the idea. That is what Speakeasy doesn't like. While I'm sure Speakeasy doesn't like the concept, if it's in the TOS (and many people subscribe to Speakeasy because it is there), they can't stop the idea, just the using of their name.

And this I agree with that, like I said in my first post, if it's in the TOS, go for it. If it's not, it their butt on the line, not mine.

bandwidth is artificially scarce

ISPs in 100 Mbps FTTH installations should not be worried about FON; ISPs selling 384 Kbps/ 128 Kbps lines should worry.
