| No broadband today After months of hinting that Spaceway capacity probably would be shared between HDTV programming and Internet applications, News Corp. has decided that it will use the satellite only to deliver TV channels, officials familiar with the details said. Moreover, industry officials said it isn't clear when, or even if, the second satellite will be put into service.
In El Segundo, Calif., a DirecTV spokesman declined to detail the company's plans. "We are planning on using" the Spaceway satellites "in the most productive ways" possible, he said, adding that such goals could include increasing DirecTV's capacity to broadcast high-definition signals to hundreds of specific U.S. markets.

| Latency, Speeds, FAP bucket? Will the new system have low bearable latency (150ms or less for gamers), good speeds (1.5 Mb/256Kb), and a non-existant FAP bucket (or atleast something better like 400MB/3 hours)?
Or is this going to be the same worthless crap we're all accustomed to..slow speeds, horrible latency, and a crappy download cap...but for a higher price? | |

| LEO (Low Earth orbit) is considerably closer to the ether then geosync. Like, 4-5X less. So, less latency.
However, the problem with LEO sat's is, they can not stay at the same speed the earth is ("stay still", to those of us on earth), so they are moving targets.
This makes it more complicated, as well as requiring more satellites (because they are moving, need more to have constant coverage). I forget what the number was, but it was like ~150 satellites for coverage of the whole earth. (VS ~8 for geosync for the same coverage). Thus, a lot more cost. | |

| Even if they worked out a way to get 150ms latency, you would still piss people off while trying to game. You need sub 100ms to play right. If they can't get something sub 100ms, why even bother. Gaming is not a right and just a privilege. Those people in the middle of nowhere where is makes no sense to set up dsl or cable, should be happy with it. Now I know people have it in areas where they are a block from someone who has either service and are told they can't get it. But eventually all densely populated areas will get either dsl or cable or to an extent fixed wireless which can give the exact same service as dsl or cable. | |

Don't worry, I doubt it ever will be used for anything other than video conferencing by large corporations. That was/is the original focus of the Spaceway technology.

They can't do anything about ping times, but they need to increase upload times over what's available now through DirecWay to make it a useful service. It's no better than dial-up now. | |

I meant upload isn't any better than dial-up. It takes just as long to send a 1 MB email with satellite as with dial-up. VPN's isn't supposed to work well, either. So using it for staying in touch with the office isn't that great. That being the case, it's hard for me to justify the high price for the service. | |

This is my standard. upon purchase and near renegotiation I got 3-4 times better but never above 128 Kb/sec d/l, within a month of my new 2 year slavery contract speed dropped dramatically, no more laughing at cable guys about my d/l speeds. 3 am and I get almost double on burst but d/ling a patch from their website while on the phone with useless support i got 7KB/sec, dude didn't know what to say... silence from their end and the "Please test every 4 hours and forward the results please." line they use to make you bugger off for a while.

I move at least twice a year for cool summers and warm winters, and a telephone line is imposable. The waiting list for one is from 2 up to 6 months, and the installation fee is $120. Like many Americans I make do with a local prepaid cell phone or a prepaid phone card. The only thing that puts me off is the initial price. If I had a lot of money I would not need to live in Mexico. The Latency is a physical fact that can’t be changed, but the ability to download e-books and recent USA movies would be great. | |
