Lack of customer service hinders solutions
(old news - 09:41AM Friday Feb 01 2008)
tags: trouble · spam · VoIP
Skype has faced a series of complaints from users over the past year and predictions for its future have been glum. The situation has only gotten worse as Skype spam has been on the rise. Suggestions last year that Skype form a ‘Do Not Spam’ list went ignored; in fact, the site’s user database is a source for people looking for lists of folks to spam. Skype calls from Russian sex sites and Chinese marketing teams have been flooding the system. Skype's customer service is notoriously lacking so there’s little that an individual can do about the problem besides block one user at a time as the calls come in. As other VoIP systems become more prevalent, a shift away from Skype seems likely.

2 things you can do to stop Skype spam

Go to Preferences > Privacy and set “allow instant messages from” to “only people whom I have authorized to start.”

With all the technologies (exploits) incorporated with Skype at least some hacker ought to serve up some eggs with the Spam

Moved on...

Skype is no longer used here. Didn't renew this year, as price went up, Quality went down. Abandon ship, Mates.

Made to Spam

The decentralized nature of Skype makes it particularly difficult to police Skype. Many people went to Skype because it was difficult to block (that obstacle has apparently been overcome), small, and required little bandwith to get a decent call out.

These same things make it ideal for a cheap callroom situation.

Every night

I use it every night when I play online games.
It's free!
It's crystal clear!
It works!
Did I mention - It's Free!

BTW, *I* never get any spam while on Skype.

obvious button?

Is it really THAT hard to disable crap that you don't know? Show anon status online, and only let friends in that are friends?

Seriously ppl are just DUMB, I'm not surprised they haven't been taking more advantage of.

Of course, you can't use this option if you use Skype to run a small business out of your home. Incoming calls from strangers can't be blocked. But any business using Skype as their phone tool is making a big mistake.

Re: obvious button?

if you are using a telephone number for your business that is different. The spam is coming from your user name not a telephone number. If you block users that are not your friend telephone calls to your skyp in number will still go through!

I wondered about this to I am on Skype every night for several hours with a group of Ham Radio friends. I have my account configured so the only people I see are the ones on my contact list, is this so hard.

Shouldn't you be using your radios?

They are all online worrying about BPL messing up their ham radios instead of actually using their ham radios.

We do have our radio's going but at night 80 meters is long so you can't talk close in, by close I mean less then 400 miles or so.

I'm assuming that wouldn't work in a business setting (the articles indicate businesses use Skype? ). How do you put legitimate people on a contact list when you haven't spoken to them yet?

I have several friends online that work for major oil companies and they use skype to talk to off shore oil rigs because there are no cellphone towers in the area. All they have is satellite internet, so it makes it very convinent.

The main issue with skype and this so called "spam" is the fact that everyone can see everyone else by DEFAULT when you install and use the application. Image if that was the case with AIM or MSN messenger? Getting random calls / messages would be flooding with ppl trying to sell viagra and other stupid scam or marketing stuff.

Skype is a WONDERFUL service, and I am aware that some ppl bash it but for me and my household it is ALL WE HAVE. Connection is solid, service is solid, and the price can't be beat.

60 bucks a YEAR for all incoming and outgoing phonecalls to anywhere in the USA / Canada / etc. I get my own voicemail, I can answer my HOUSE PHONE from my laptop or anywhere I am at at any time etc.

They have alot of great services, and for the price you can't complain. If you are too dumb to use it right, or feel you are being short changed consider the fact that you are paying next to nothing for a service. I'm surprised they are doing as well as they are for being bought out by Ebay.

Re: obvious button?

I'm not complaining, I don't use Skype. I was just commenting on the suggestion to only accept calls/messages from known people, via the Privacy settings, which wouldn't work in a business setting when many unknown/new people might be trying to contact the business.

In your example, Skype obviously works fine, especially since there aren't many alternatives. Off shore oil rigs are an exception, not exactly the same as a land based business with many choices.

How hard is this problems to solve...

I'm sure that there is a simple technological solution to this problem:

If you're repeatedly calling lots of people who you've never had contact with, you're a spammer. If you're a spammer, you can't call people on the do-not-call list.

Someone from Skype please IM me to let me know where I can send my bill for services rendered.

One more thing to mention, the national do not call list applies to Skype as well - »https://www.donotcall.gov/

Bingo. Also, if lots of people block you after you send a chat to them, you're a spammer. Plonk.

No problem here.

I have been a Skype user for over a year now. I have a WiFi phone that I use as my home phone. I am listed to allow anyone to see me on line. No one bothers me, at all. It has always worked great. In fact, I've noticed that the sound quality is become significantly better over the last month or so.

ebay ruining skype?

I have never been hit by spam on Skype either. I use it a few hours a day, only the free service.
...I remember way back in the pre Skype days using Phone Free or something... playing yahoo backgammon and chatting with people from all over...the spam back then was lonely people and perverts who wanted to chat or cyber. Now they want your money, data, etc.
back to reality. What are good alternatives to Skype? I have tried gizmo and some others but always go back to Skype, the calls are just clearer and conferencing is easy.
