Pushes Atlanta back to number two...
(old news - 09:43AM Friday Jan 23 2009)
tags: coverage · business · stats
Forbes has published its annual list of the "most wired" cities in America, the report giving Seattle the honors; surprising given that Qwest (whose next generation deployment plans are the least aggressive of all baby bells) is the city's incumbent operator. Apparently helping Seattle nudge Atlanta out of the top spot was the number of carriers in business locally (Forbes seems pretty generous on this front, estimating 20 or more in some markets), a high broadband penetration per capita (using data provided by Scarborough Research) -- and the number of public Wi-Fi hotspots. Also in the top five: Atlanta, Washington DC, Boston, and Orlando, Florida.

Must be the caffeine

sorry, couldn't resist

Not surprising, though. It seems the NW is tech savvy, so if there's a market...

Re: Must be the caffeine

I am wired on a daily basis with all the coffee available here, are they counting individuals during this survey?

Someone explain this one.

"The surprise of the list is Minneapolis, which improved its standing from No. 11 to No. 7, beating New York and Portland, Ore., among others. Minneapolis' secret? A particularly broad range of service providers, including a number of neighborhoods with 20 different access options for high-speed Internet. "

Who does their counting?

Re: Someone explain this one.

I have no idea and found that equally bizarre. Business lines, CLECs (even though many of them like Speakeasy now focus on small business), wireless, and carrier pigeon?

uh....

Hmm, we have Comcast or Qwest and if you're really lucky you live close enough to a Covad CO.

If you live in the suburbs you can get FIOS.
