Criminal host briefly comes online again, shut down...
(old news - 09:01AM Thursday Nov 20 2008)
tags: spam · scam
Last week a Washington Post reporter managed to take down McColo, a California-based host thought to host a handful of botnets responsible for roughly 75% of the world's spam, as well as being a host for anti-malware scams, child porn websites and child porn payment data. The Post (via Techdirt) now has a follow up report that suggests McColo came online briefly last weekend so that Russian criminals could transfer data and regain some control over botnets. Swedish telco TeliaSonera quickly pulled the plug on McColo's new data pipe when notified. However, they were online long enough for spammers to regain 10,000 to 15,000 of an estimated 100,000 infected PCs.

Decrease in spam

They really were massive spammers, my personal email account and our work spam filter saw a dramatic decrease in spam over the last couple of weeks.

I'd like to know how they came back online briefly? Did the Russian Mob (or whoever is controlling the botnets) threaten or bribe a network engineer at Telia Sonera to bring the network back online? Or is McColo just trying to restore their business because they haven't been charged with a crime?

Re: Decrease in spam

According to one article I read on the matter, Telia was a backup provider for McColo in case of a massive network failure. McColo sat out for 4 days probably figuring no one works on Saturday and ramped up their backup connection on Saturday morning thinking no one will do anything until Monday.

I've seen a major decrease on two of my email accounts. Not that it matters anyways, because the filters work damn well.

as far as i know, they don't need to be charged with a crime for their internet connection to be pulled, until they find a new ISP. i'm pretty sure every ISP as something that resembles an 'acceptable use policy' and voilating it could result in the termination of services.

Look at the bright side

Some Telia sales droid on the west coast figured he inked the deal of a lifetime last week.

Criminal charges?

Why aren't the owners of this rogue ISP facing criminal charges? Even if you believe that, in the past, they weren't aware of what their customers were doing, it became crystal clear that they are not only the criminals' provider but an integral part of the criminal enterprise. I'd love to see these scumbags charged.

Better Question, where is McColo's data center?

Probably paid a fat brible to Bush!

Back after 9/11 Bush stiopped the FBI from investigating the Ladens his business partner. Bin Laden still safe speaks volumes on how much difficult time Bush had in protecting the son of his business partner. From the same exaple one can derive that the McColos Probably paid a fat brible to Bush

I'm no fan of Bush either (can't stand the guy), but I fail to see how your post has anything at all to do with this topic.

If you're going to bash Bush, at least do it at the appropriate time. There are plenty of those, but this isn't one of them.

Re: Probably paid a fat brible to Bush!

I've found that posting something critical of someone (Bush, for instance) is much more effective when the criticism is appropriate to the discussion at hand. Otherwise, you come off as some kind of nut.

But let's not let this thread get OT. We're supposed to be discussing the scumbag criminals in and around McColo.
