Is it worth a try or too much of a risk?

There’s an interesting article over at TorrentFreak discussing a company called Rhever which aims to replace BitTorrent and LimeWire filesharing with what is basically a Usenet service. At first glance, Rhever looks interesting. It preys on fears that people have about filesharing fines, viruses and problems with adware and claims to offer a service that comes with none of those problems. However, upon closer examination, it appears that the company is basing their business on those fears alone and that their actual business is questionable. The owners of the site previously owned a domain which was associated with malware. Combined with the lack of information about the company on the site and the fact that the only press about the service comes from their PR department, this leaves many questions to be answered about whether or not this is a viable P2P service.

Crap

Just another version of one of those sites that provide "unlimited downloads" for a monthly fee that enables you access to otherwise completely free p2p applications and p2p networks. They of course charge for 'support'.

It isn't P2P. According to the news item all it is is a directory to usenet files.

So it seems Rhever is selling access to good old Usenet and advises its subscribers to use NZB files to get their material, recommending its own (currently non-operational) site to get them - NZB.net.

This is what happens with the weekend news person. Malware hawkers posted a PR release somewhere, and the weekend news guy blindly copies it. Insane news has made it multiple times onto DSLR on the weekeneds before. Wheres Karl when you need him?

Usenet

Usenet with an encrypted SSL connection is the only safe way to get what you need. And the fastest as well.

Some people will say they cannot afford a subscription. I agree Giganews is pricey, but there are other alternatives.

I however think it is highly hypocritical that people whine Usenet is too expansive when they use Bittorent to rip hundreds of dollars worth of software or media each month.

You mean besides purchasing the content via an authorized mechanism.

I fail to see the irony in my statement.

Re: Usenet

You don't see irony in people complaining about paying for the ability to obtain content that they should be paying for in the first place?

Re: Usenet

Yes it is. I find it more hypocritical though.

I do use Usenet even though there isn't one piece of pirated software on my PC, from the OS to Office, to Adobe CS3 or all my games.

However the only place I can watch Battlestar Galactica in 720p is Usenet, so there you have it.

Yes, it is hypocritical as well. BTW, I never called you out for unauthorized activity.

A lot of people have been paying for Usenet subscriptions for a long time.

To an even greater extent, you could argue that "everyone" is paying for content they should be paying for in the first place through their monthly ISP bills.

Heck, I know people who pay upwards of 60-120 bucks a month for a dedicated server overseas to run dedicated torrent clients on!

well this seems legit (not)

Aside for the suspisous nature of the company/owners, one of the screen shots at their site shows a download of Ironman in progress......these people won't be in business long.......Let's hope there imbedded malware (just a wild guess) doesn't get loaded on too many machines in the meantime.

So

it's going to be a service that offers NZB files, probably some sort of NZB file-reader, and "tech support"?

I wonder if you have to have your own premium usenet access, or if that's included as well.

At least they've got the facts right about not having to share. Gotta love how there's nothing in the 3 videos about the legality of any of it

Just signed up for an account

...to see how this works.

I couldn't find any information on the "Quota". I figured since I saw that word in their screenshots, that they're also the provider of the usenet access. I couldn't find what that quota was until I signed up for an account.

"Subscription Name: 20GB Downloadable Monthly
Description: Includes 20 gigabytes worth of downloadable content a month. Extra gigabytes can be purchased through the account manager.

Subscription Duration: 31 days
Expiration Date: 2008-07-08

Membership Fee: $10.00"

"Purchase Points
Gigabytes Pending Addition: 0
Cost Per Gigabyte: $0.75"

So there you have it. I think I'll stick with Usenetserver.com for $15/month for unlimited GB's

support?

I was able to go to the option to buy "extra GB's", but as soon as I went to their Helpdesk area, and typed in my login info and password, it says that they're invalid.

So - pay $10/month for approx. 2 DVD ISOs, then start paying $.75 per extra GB. Rack up your bill, just don't expect that tech support.

Haha!

A cross between UseNext and Earthstation 5 (or worse)

A lot of posters to the TorrentFreak story on this said it
was nothing more than UseNext repackaged, or that it was
a cross between it and Earthstation 5.

Some comments from there:

Nothing to see here, move along,

My spidey sense is tingling.. SCAM!

This is the most blantant trap by the IFPI or whomever..

Trust me, when you have that kind of dedicated spamming and nothing to back it up (No company or even proper client).. its them. They are trying to throw yet another wrench into the mix to confuse people to just give up and buy the crap.

Every second they waste of peoples time trying to use P2P is time well spent to them, it just causes confusion and frustration. After hours of trying to figure it out and being afraid of getting caught, they just figure play it safe and buy it. Time is money.

Its fine by me, I prefer people to be semi techy to be able to use P2P, I cant stand trying to explain to a moron how to download stuff or how to avoid scams, even though I try to teach everyone I meet.. they have to be at least worthy of the knowledge.

This pretty much ended it for me

Rhever seems like a combination of UseneXT and Earth Station 5.

Does anyone here remember Earth Station 5?

Hype, deception, and lies ad nauseum.

Stephen Cohen, are you the one behind Rhever?

said by compguy :
Anyone else remember part of the mediadefender leaked emails mentioning a P2P app made by them to entrap filesharers?

This reeks of such filth.

In light of such comments, p2p users would do well to
avoid Rhever.

Rhever Information

In response to a few of the posts above.

Help desk:
Our helpdesk does not require you to login to contact support. It will always remain open so that support can receive tickets from existing members as well as new visitors with questions. I will investigate the login dialog for the Helpdesk pages, but be assured that you can contact support with or without a valid login.

Quota:
We just launched the beta release of this product last week and will be quickly fine tuning the application and website to fit our users needs. We recently increased the amount of gigabytes for the monthly subscription and based upon the feedback from this article, have just lowered the price of new gigabytes to equal the cost per gigabyte of the monthly subscription. We are aiming to provide users with a low cost solution and are currently working on providing users with an option to sign up with unlimited accounts.

Usenext Comparison:
We don't strive to be a Usenext like client. Our goal is to strip out all of the direct Usenet references and present even new Usenet users with a simplified application for searching and downloading files within Usenet servers. We only have a handful of features planned for the final version of Rhever, mostly centered around making searching for users as easy and user friendly as possible.

p2p:
The original concept of Rhever was to allow for p2p between Rhever users, but in order to not distract users from the primary idea of Rhever we decided to leave all those features out and keep the application as simple as possible.

Scam/Spyware/Adware/Malware:
Our service is definitely not a scam. Users can remove their account at any point, don't have to worry about any up front payments for a year of service. We allow users to download the application and search our database of Usenet files without ever registering for an account. The hope is that you will download the application and find what you are looking for before you even need to sign up. We are currently working to get our application certified spyware/adware/malware free.

We are still currently in beta and will be working heavily over the next three or four months to mold the application into an easy to use and friendly service.

Even if you don't wish to sign up for the subscription, you can register to be notified when the application is taken out of Beta.

I hope this answers some of the concerns new users might have.
