| Re: 99% coverage means less competition not hurting rollout More likely the 99% target can't be met by some Comcast is deploying, TW claims testing (NYC only), charter is in bankruptcy and may not be able to raise capitol even if the court allows, and many small cable companies ( aggregate footprint greater than 1 % ) don't have the resources (techincal or financial) so that goal is BS..............UNLESS the FCC allows major consolidation in the industry (ie ends their 30% cap requirment ) So the likely end result of allowing cable to update to newer/ more competitive infrasturcture will be less diverse ownership/fewer but bigger companies, often a sign of a less competive (from the consumer side) industry. | |

| Re: 99% coverage means less competition not hurting rollout with 90K catv customers Service Electric isn't huge, but they aren't one of the 100's (1000's?) of small systems that serve 100 to 10-20,000 homes (the way MOST cable systems started, before they went thru multiple consolidations) many of which are already stretched thin provide cable and internet and maybe phone, and can't afford the plant upgrades. Since "Broadband everywhere" is now a national priority, does it make more sense to pay/finance for many of these small companies to upgrade OR by simply changing a regulation allowing the mega corps to do it on their own, perhaps with some conditions attached. such as, no buying and holding for resale -- you buy it you would be required to bring it up to your national standard within X years and expand to cover unserved areas withing the footprint AND justify any price increases to a board ( esscentially reactiving local control/franchises but with limited powers to assure a consistant product at a resonable price, without the graft that occured in some areas.) if the community demanded higher/more expensive options (100% underground, 15 local access channels, free library or public service use-) then those costs plus a reasonable profit would effect local rates. | |

1 edit | Bull! I cry bull. I hate when companies put out these "optimistic" future reports. The telcos claimed a large majority would have next-gen broadband by, what years was it? 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012... and I am sure they will say it again in a few years. What are they at now? Something like < 20%, some less than 10%
I'll believes it when I sees it. --

| But with certain cable companies, like TWC... ...DOCSIS 3.0 will come with a price. Yes, you will get your ultra fast connections, but you can only download 40 Gb with it before they charge you 1$ extra.
Yeah, TWC has postponed it for now, but they are only waiting till the media isn't watching them anymore to re-introduce the caps. -- "I reject your reality and substitute my own!"

I know they are doing a very good job IMHO of getting D3 out, if only they would expand ANY docsis to my area(about 10mi from where their service ends), on the bright side they want to get ALL the area they serve near me to docsis3 by years end maybe me area will be served soon after.

1 edit | yawn quote: A new Pike and Fisher report says cable operators should have DOCSIS 3.0 deployed to 99% of homes passed by 2013. About 15 million of the 120 million homes served with cable had DOCSIS 3.0 functionality at the end of 2008, a number that should jump to 53 million homes this year, and 119 million by 2013. Relatively inexpensive deployments will help carriers cut operational costs and boost revenues, notes the group.

I don't feel like finding NY Times "Special Corespondent" pieces from the 1990s of how NYNEX/BA will have atleast 10% FTTH by 2000 but I know there are somewhere there.
Here we go straight from the horses mouth, although no percentages were included, just "eventually" which means FIOS is part of this press release »newscenter.verizon.com/press-rel···29607541

Yeah, I really wish AT&T or Verizon would take over the telco market here so we could atleast have another broadband inclined provider. Embarq only offers 1.5 Mbps DSL to my location, I'm not expecting much out of their CenturyTel merger either.

| If you really want Docis 3 service from Cox do what Lafayette did and start your own municipal fiber network... that's where Cox put its very first Docsis 3 build
Here in Lafayette we have two 50 meg providers: local utility LUS & Cox.
Of course the LUS deal is 1)symmetrical and 2)cheaper...but at least Cox is trying.

1 edit | I can believe it. Just in Pennsylvania alone, some of the most rural areas are launching Docsis 3.0. It's relatively inexpensive and just a matter of making sure the system has the available bandwidth for channel bonding, as well as, a couple pieces of equipment in the headend. I don't understand why people are doubting the 4 year deadline, I mean, I work in a 550 MHz system and they're even testing.
As far as caps go, I play games at least 1-3 hrs an evening, stream multiple video's from youtube, even watch a movie off of fancast or hulu and I am definitely not even close to this "limit". Then again, I don't pirate movies, music, software, or anything of the sort.
