Remember Zer01? They've Mysteriously Disappeared
Is 'Global Mobile 1' Buzzkirk's effort at a rebranding?

Last summer we skeptically directed your attention to a carrier by the name of Zero1, which was promising users unlimited voice and data on smart phones for $69.95/month, without a contract. The service claimed to use a VoIP application to route all calls. According to the founders, the service tunneled over GSM networks, though Zero1 claimed to have their own IP network -- and claimed to be using interconnect (roaming) agreements to make calls. In short, Zer01 was supposed to be a mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE).

Click for full size
The problem? People started to dig into the operator and notice that it had the light fishy smell of an MLM or pyramid scheme. The company's apparently "floating" headquarters, the lack of product beyond a shiny GUI, and the shady business practices of a few executive partners left most in the telecom press with a bad taste in their mouth. The more people dug into the specifics behind the company, the more people began to notice they quite often made no technical sense.

It was entertaining to see some in the press develop their critical thinking skills and skepticism in hindsight. Laptop Magazine, which was originally so smitten with the unlaunched vaporware they gave them a CTIA award, was ultimately forced to acknowledge the problems and took the award back. According to the magazine, the award was pulled "because of serious ethical questions that have arisen about the company." The award remained prominently featured on Zer01's website.

That was, until last week. Glenn Fleishman directs our attention to the fact that Zer01's website has gone mysteriously offline, and now just redirects to Google.com. The company, which was quick to blame business partners for its problems and threatened to sue news outlets that spoke poorly of them -- aren't responding to requests for comment. Perhaps the company's seemingly-endless throngs of MLM spammers (who flooded every news story Internet wide defending the company) would like to comment?

Update: One user directs our attention to the fact that Buzzkirk Mobile and other partners may have decided to rebrand Zer01 in order to escape some of the recent criticism. We're starting to see some familiar MLM spammers pop up in our forums trying to generate interest in a new carrier by the name of Global Mobile 1 by Buzzkirk Mobile.

What a scam....

Is anyone really surprised? Any negative thread was then spammed by their "marketers" claiming that it was going to be the next best thing ever....

Not surprised at all. Some analysts called this from the beginning, but were drowned out by those tech news outlets that just republish PR releases and act like they have done research on the new product or service.

See the BUZZirk Mobile logo? My guess is that this is just the new face.
I found that here from this link as Your20G was a all over the thread orgininally and now a "friend" told him about this new company.

There are mainline wireless providers that offer these types of services now. Sprint has one. There are others but I'm too lazy to look them all up.

Sprint has Boost:

Who cares?

You can get unlimited talk and text on AT&T and T-Mobile for $60 per month, no VoIP hand-waving required. If you're willing to go with Verizon, that's $40/month (Page Plus Cellular) though AFAIK you can't activate most smartphones on PPC anymore. Sprint has their Boost Mobile offering, which includes data and is a mere $50.

So, really, who cares about what Buzzirk had to bring to the table?

they were offering different

not the same as with page plus or boost or whatever. Those plans don't work if you aren't by a big city or travel. You get SOME of the coverage of ATT or Verizon etc, but when on the pre-paid, you don't get all the sharing. If you have service you end up roaming.

For the phone service, that was what people were looking at. Coverage, voice, text and data. Also only $10 a month more for unlimited to many other countries.

You all are talking apples and oranges. Find me the provider that offers the coverage and service for --

Page Plus doesn't work out side of the large city? WTF! PagePlus is resold VZW. They're actually based in Holland (a burb of Toledo), Ohio.

They're one of the oldest MNVOs in the business. The only thing PPC doesn't offer in the unlimited plan is picture mail. they charge extra for that.

Re: Some links to Global Mobile 1's site.

the story sounds just as familiar as DATAJACK...

with their unlimited data usage on a mobile broadband device for $39.99 (using T-Mobile's spotty 3G network)

That didn't even last a month. Although their website is still up.

they keep repeating they're not going down, but haven't sold devices in two months after their initial rollout failed.

Re: Some links to Global Mobile 1's site.

The MagicJack cell thing is different: MagicJack wants to put a potentially illegal femtocell in homes. The company believes it can intercept cell signals within someone's own home (private property) and then redirect to its VoIP network over a broadband connection. Cell companies will almost certainly sue. But it's a real way to do this, just potentially a violation of federal law, and almost certainly only to be decided in a court of law.

On Global Mobile 1, they likely will have fairly high rates per month like Zero1/Buzzirk. Might be OK for heavier users that want a flat rate service, but there is a lot of competition (some lesser priced) in that particular market. We'll see how if eventually plays out.

MagicJack is not just cellular hookup. According to their website it will use just about anything except for dial-up (too slow) and satellite (likely latency issues). They are not stealing cellular service since the subscriber would still be paying for the cellular connection. Of course the cellular provider could just block the VOIP ports or terminate service if someone violated the T&C. Some providers will tolerate VOIP connections (e.g. AT&T and iphones).

"magicJack requires one of the following Internet connections:

Broadband
High-Speed Internet
Cable Internet
DSL
WiFi
Wireless
WiMax
A minimum bandwidth UPLOAD speed of 128 kb/s is required."

Datajack has (had?) a good rate at $40/month for unlimited (cheaper than most competition) but don't know if they will resume service. After Slingshot tanked I went with Millenicom Verizon(after a short stint on AT&T prepaid data), and stayed away from Datajack due to network issues (T-Mo doesn't have enough 3g coverage where I travel).

I think the reason that is is because they are not "published" yet but still associated with the site. I came across the initial link from one of their "e-associates" who was initially pushing Zer01 and not Global Mobile 1.

That was helpful... Mark Christopher Petschel has a tendency to pick up speeding tickets in Missouri.
Thanks to those, you can find on case.net that his home address changed from
2230 Rebecca Lynn Ct, Chesterfield, MO 63017
(very close to the creve coeur address for Zer01)
to
2351 NE Cross Creek Ln, Lee's Summit, MO 64086
which just happens to be less then 5 miles away from the new address for Global Mobile 1.
