Network glitch, not new throttling policy
(old news - 10:37AM Wednesday Dec 19 2007)
tags: Fileswapping · business · cable · RCN CABLE
Yesterday we mentioned how RCN users were having trouble with BitTorrent connectivity, but suggested it was likely a network issue and not a new effort to throttle p2p traffic. Jason Nealis Senior Director of operations for RCN, tells us that the problem has been addressed. "The device we use to enforce our P2P policy has some issues and was causing a degrade in service," says Nealis. "We are still tracking the problem, but a reset of the interface cleared the issue." RCN has consistently been very direct about their network management policies.

Be very sure...

....when they fix the glitch (ie make packet shaping less detectable) they will have their little Sandvine shit box back on.

Re: Be very sure...

So you're saying the sky is falling? Bottom line, when providers aren't open about tactics and policies, BBR members bitch. When providers are forthcoming, and provide information to users, BBR members bitch. So, when does the bitching stop?

When you give them 1000/1000 fiber to the home for $10.

Can't Tor users enable encryption so noone can see the packets contents? That stuff isn't for their eyes to view anyways...

Rogers gets around encrypted traffic by the throttling ALL encrypted traffic. in the end, the little guy still loses!

Kudos

A least they are straight forward and not a bunch of side stepping jerk offs like Comcast. Sandvine rocks! I want one. I have no problem with what they are doing. Throttle away! It is a necessary step to keeping network performance from degrading by selfish and uneducated users.

Throttle to a usable limit, not block. That will 1) keep your BT users happy and 2) keep your non-BT users happy (folks like me).

I like ISPs that are straight forward in their policies as well!
maybe the government should pick up on it

Re: Kudos

I totally agree exocet_cm See Profile. All the sandvine implementation I have seen is purely blocking. Is it even able to limit bandwidth upon packet inspection? I would really like to see a sandvine tech or a cable tech with sandvine experience come forward and explain what and what not can be done with this device.

Re: Kudos

It does have the ability to limit and not just block.

RCN not traffic shaping in the Philadelphia area

Not by me in the philadelphia area at least.

Jeez, that's one of the reasons I got RCN over comcast when I moved into this apartment. I don't like my data being messed with, even if I'm not a big bit torrent user.

Besides, RCN seems like the little guy out of my choices, and I like that. Also, their phone service is a regular land line not VOIP so I don't have to worry about any of the issues that go alone with VOIP phone service.

RCN BitTorrent Issue is NOT FIXEDI

Located in Philly region. Upload connections are definitely being throttled and have been being throttled for at least two weeks.

Paid for the 20 Mpbs service for 8 months. Cable modem died and noticed that I had actually been getting 10 Mbps or less.
Because the new cable modem speeds were the same as my old one. When I asked the technician to do a bandwidth test my suspicions were confirmed. They had never updated the firmware or whatever controls the speed on my old cable modem and the new cable modem had to be updated as well.

Running a test today I am getting 12 Mbps on the download which is still no where near what I am paying for.

$65 dollars a month to be jerked around. FIOS cannot get here soon enough.

Stay away from RCN.
