| Who wants Qwest? I would think that neither Verizon nor AT&T would want all of Qwest. A lot of Qwest is miles and miles of unpopulated areas leading to a ranch. Really not much of a good business deal. The cities might have some good points, but the majority of Qwest's territory is a real low performer from a business standpoint. | |

Some of their local service areas would be terrible to maintain, as I said, miles and miles from point A to point B. You might interest a buyer in the long distance business and taking some of the bigger cities, but the rural areas of Wyoming, etc., would not really be profitable.

In my opinion, Qwest does not have much to offer to those two anyway. Qwest only has a few large markets to tap into, and the rest of their footprint is fairly rural.

Qwest does have a lot of sparcely populated territory, but let's not assume that their entire territory is rural.
Phoenix metro- 4 million Seattle metro- 3 million Denver metro- 2.5 million Minneapolis metro- 3 million Portland metro- 2 million Tucson metro- 1 million Salt Lake City metro- 1 million
Throw in Omaha, Eugene, Yuma, Boise and other mid-sized cities and there's more than a few desireable markets there.
Some rural areas are served by ILECs (some were sold off by Qwest), but add up the population of the 14 states in Qwest's territory and you get 40 million people.

| Dynodb,
I did not say their entire footprint is rural. I said other than a few large markets, its fairly (mostly) rural.
I have always claimed that the Phoenix, Denver, and Minneapolis are Qwest's largest markets. But those are their only real "large" markets. My definition of a large market would be an excess of 1-1.5 million in the surrounding metro. Ive been to Tucson and SLC. They dont feel like large cities because it so spread out, compared to a place like Baltimore (similar population size) or Philly where its really dense. FWIW, I grew up in the D.C. metro.
Im inclined to not include Seattle or Portland as a market that Qwest can have 100% access to because they arent the only telco in those cities; VZ services significant portion of subscribers there. I'd say the Seattle area more so than Portland. I believe Omaha is the same, based on the fact that I have seen U-Verse reviews from people there. You probably know more about this than I do.
But unfortunately for Qwest, compared to Verizon and ATT regions, Qwest in general services areas which are low in population density and really just arent that big of metro areas. Verizon alone can make a fortune just by servicing the old Bell Atlantic/NYNEX areas. Then tack on Los Angeles/Orange County, Dallas/Fort Worth, Portland, Seattle to their footprint, and then you can really see how many customers they reach in a relatively small area. DSL, FTTH, and FTTN penetration rates are probably much higher because of the density of their respective regions.
In addition, household incomes are on average much higher in the areas where Verizon and ATT services; they can charge more, provide more services, etc.
I guess my point is, at this point in time, Qwest doesnt seem attractive enough for Verizon or ATT. Those two are already taking on debt already from their own projects, they each have their own shareholders to please, and because of the economy, they arent likely to buy a company who isnt in the greatest of financial health at the moment..
But It may change in the next couple years, who knows?

Qwest has been touting FTTN in the Twin Cities for the last 6 months are so, but maybe a handful of regions have access to it. So that means at best most areas in MN get the $43 1.5/768 compared to a similarly priced 12/2 blast tier from Comcast.

| "Merger" hmmm!!! I, actually think that AT&T will strike on this one, and buyout Quest Communcations International in full. I think the N.S.A will really benefit from this for homeland security issues, and with AT&T throwing 2 million dollars in every political party members campaign, in Washington D.C. and Kissing A%% with the government. I think the new Democratic FCC Chief whoever Mister, Obama chooses will see this as a great benefit to homeland Security, and the Department of Justice, will have no problem along with the Federal Trade Commission, both of them will have no problems getting this merger approved in a heart beat that is just my opinion. I maybe wrong and I dont know for sure. | |

| Merger If any of the other two big telcos were going to buy Qwest, they'd have done it much earlier- it's not like Qwest's situation is new, after all, and waiting until now would mean having to go through the Obama administration, while the Bush administration is far more likely to approve such a merger. That's why the Alltel-VZW merger was done when it was, for example. | |

| Verizon wouldn't buy Qwest I don't think Verizon would buy Qwest just so they could deploy FiOS in Qwest areas. It would be much more likely that if Verizon wanted to deploy FiOS in Qwest territory, they would probably just overbuild since it would probably be cheaper than buying Qwest and getting stuck with rural territories that Verizon is shedding anyway. Buying Qwest would be like buying back what it sold to Fairpoint. I do believe Verizon extended FiOS to one town in Texas outside of its original territory and that was because they already had it in one part of the town that was served by them. Thus most likely they would follow that strategy instead of buying Qwest. at&t on the other hand seems like they'll buy just about anything. | |

| This Old Telco... Who wants to buy a rickity old telco with more legacy copper per square mile than any of the other telcos (at the start of *REAL* broadband upgrades) and huge costs to upgrade it's existing network-- add to that it's sizable debt load.. and you see why any sale pre-bankruptcy would be problematic for a buyer.
There is no doubt that I believe a viable market is there once upgrades (comparable to those in the northeast) become reality , however... without a buyer with 10-40 billion to drop on the project, it won't get done. There is a possibility that some money will come from the government for rural building & universal access, but it is doubtful they will drop money down a black hole.. the telco will be accountable for doing exactly as the money prescribes. We've also heard very little from the State governments for whom the Qwest footprint covers. Why have they been so lax over the past 2+ decades about Qwests investment on infrastructure? The money that was spent, just in the last 8-10 years could have funded cumulative fiber upgrades instead of maintaining & rehabbing copper for dsl... even if it was ONE block, c/o at at time.
** One last thing.. I doubt any company wants Qwest. Unless maybe the Mexican Phone Company buys Qwest..TDM? Or possibly having ALL the minority carriers merge into a syndicate and runs Qwest collectively.
