OnStar to Demo In-Car LTE Services at CES
Powered by LTE, Video Streaming Only Works in Park
by Karl Bode Thursday 29-Dec-2011 tags: Video · business · wireless · hardware · alternatives · content · networking · wireless
OnStar has been working with Verizon Wireless for some time on a system that will integrate entertainment, emergency and communications tools into vehicles, all using Verizon's LTE network. OnStar's prepared to highlight their latest progress on this effort at CES, and will demonstrate a Chevy Volt with the capability of streaming cloud media using LTE. To deal with safety concerns, the company is telling the press that front seat video streaming services will apparently only work when the vehicle is in park. We assume that in line with recent behavior, OnStar will track and sell all your usage data at no extra charge.

Good possibility for BACK SEAT entertainment systems

The article mentions that the system won't work in the front screen nav screen unless vehicle is parked. But it would work well as a system for back seat screens for minivans to entertain the kiddies on trips or back and forth to school or soccer matches. Of course, the price will to be too high if the system is used very much for video due to low caps and high prices of mobile data. Of course, with a bluetooth keyboard, the kiddies could Facebook and text and not run over the caps.

Re: Good possibility for BACK SEAT entertainment systems

one could also throw in a Wifi chipset and on board storage if they have such things in future plans allowing one to pull data from their home LAN while its in the driveway.

I will be honest, this is where Google should try and get more Android licenses. with more and more cars having what are effectively computers built in with 3g and soon 4g connectivity its only time before there is desire for apps. And with cell data connectivity the GPS maps would only have to be as out of date as Google Maps itself is.

and then to add to the droid Idea. have a Convoy App. any cars with the droidNav system could join a private password protected group(basically like forming your own channel on IRC if you will) with other cars if you are traveling as a group and you would be able to keep track of your convoy on the GPS.

and for the back seats a Wikipedia app that could look at the car's location and bring up interesting data if you wanted to.. Could also bring up whole new ideas for self guided tourism.. A "National Parks App" that follows your GPS location in the park and plays interesting audio facts through the stereo system.

Just think if a car company could advertise the back seats having the equal of droid tablets for at least two of the passengers.

Don't forget the automatic speeding reports to police.

Here in Central Florida the police do not have to prove who was driving a vehicle when a violation occurs. Just issue a ticket to the owner if the vehicle runs a red light no matter who was driving. If a mechanic was trying to determine if the flegal is twisted when the violation occurred why not screw the vehicle owner.

What a business opportunity. If OnStar reports a vehicle speeding to the police all the police have to do is issue a citation to the vehicle owner. OnStar can get a cut of the fines just like the companies that install the traffic signal cameras do.

Make it simpler for Big Brother. Make OnStar mandatory and just install an RFID transponder in each driver license. Let big brother know who was driving and where they were going.

You still have the right to contest the citation in a court of law...just like if you had been cited by a living, breathing, enforcement official.

You don't live in an area where there are red-light cameras, I'd assume.

Here in CA, you have to 'pay to play' to go to court. I.E. If you're going to contest your ticket, you have to pay up first, then fight for the right to go to court to pay get it back. Its 1984.

Re: Don't forget the automatic speeding reports to police.

Enjoy CA. Everywhere that I've lived, a person is cited and a court date is established. The person has a choice to remit payment for the fine prior to the court date or appear in court to defend themselves. There's always a "court fee" regardless of the action taken.

Note to self...don't move to California.

Take the ticket to court and argue it wasn't you driving.

Can roaming not be disabled with current OnStar plans?

OnStar doesn't charge for roaming. I have driven all through Canada with my OnStar system just fine. Though current OnStar systems use In-Band modem signaling instead of PS data. Not sure if they are going to charge anything extra for LTE or if it will be a plan based thing.

System can be hacked

As with build Navigation system, there is a way to change this and people will find a way.

I pulled the FUSE on my on-star last month. After my subscription ended, I got random calls for me to renew.

so, it goes to show, even though your subscription ends, the system is STILL active and tracking you....

Nah, their system flagged your account and they called. Nothing else, nothing more.

Yep pretty much like any other subscription service, they want the business back. Even MMORPGs I have long quit I sometimes get an email here and there asking me to start back.

I'm thinking of getting OnStar FMV

I am thinking of getting OnStar installed in my Dodge Stratus. I've been driving since 2001 on a learner's permit and I got my license in 2003. I dont know how many times I've had a breakdown or an accident and I did not know my exact location. I have triple A but you have to give your exact location. I navigate using landmarks and interstate numbers. I once broke down on the Mass Pike and I had to call the state police to locate me so I could get a tow truck. They ask for the mile marker but those things are so small and many of them are missing. I just navigate by exit number and interstate number when using the interstate system.
