Tech businesses and broadcasters get ready for Beijing
12:05PM Sunday Apr 13 2008 by KathrynV

As the world gears up for the summer Olympics in Beijing, businesses are ramping up their technology in order to provide online and mobile coverage of the event. One such company is Omneon, a video server and storage supplier which is working with NBC to find innovative ways to store and transfer Olympics video content. Essentially, every moment of the Olympics will be captured on video and that video needs to be available in multiple formats for broadcast, cable, broadband, video-on-demand, HDTV and mobile video platforms. Omneon’s system allows all of the content to be stored in different resolutions and makes it accessible to NBC’s USA-based staff without taxing the limits of the system.

This way we can see the Tibetan Monk-torchings in all their glorious detail.

no doubt. but we all know that the only things getting past the censorship will be the pollution in the air, and maybe a lone chant or two if you listen close.

Hmmm. I can see how the pollution can be a problem. Perhaps when the IOC chooses Pyongyang for the 2016 games, pollution won't be that much of concern anymore.

Data

I wonder how much data they are storing? As well as if they are compressing it on the fly and how much of a delay to what we see here in the states.

Re: Data

Considering that they're 12 hours ahead of us it's going to be a bit of a delay.

So just wake up and look in the paper and that's all you'll need to see. No need to watch the events as they already happened.

Re: Data

Will china be able to force censorship on to the video and will NBC show anything with FREE Tibet on it?

How can they be ahead of us, with that defeatus attitude they will always win. Simply watch when the events actually take place, why be limited by conventions.......

.

They're going to be needing a lot of distribution servers if they are going to be doing HD over the internet, but I'm not much of an olympics person, so I'm good.
