Safety equipment was made for a reason. They should take all risks for not using them. Should it be death or what ever.

| . i am a power lineman and accidents still happen regularly. We have a union and huge safety programs that our employers are forced to keep up with(insurance). We do not want to be rushed by our employers because thats when accidents happen. These cell phone guys appear that they are in our situation of the 70s. whats so hard with belting on? | |

| What Problem? quote: In most of the cases, the climbers had the appropriate safety equipment, they just didn't bother to use it properly.
Ok, so this is just Darwin at work. Do we need to really spend all sorts of our time and money to come to the conclusion that people who disregard safety protocols and engage in dangerous activities often die? -- This isn't fair! I was only supposed to hate just ONE presidential candidate!

| Tower Work Hello,
I recently Got A job with a wireless contractor doing low ground work. (I would climb a tower for a living despite I am afarid of heights) I had asked about tower work and they told me that due to the safety issues and regulations its a whole different can of worms. Either the climbers are not being trained properly or are being careless when they climb towers. I do believe the article when it says this is one of the most deadiliest jobs in america. Then not to mention when towers are camafloughed like trees does this make it harder to work on them? I dont know I dont know too much about tower work really, Not to mention how are you suppose to belt on? all you have is a vertical pole coming several hundred feet out of the ground the only way you are going is down! (Gravity) I had assumed they used boom lifts or bucket trucks in order to access the antennas and pannels on towers.

| Re: Tower Work It's a good thing you're on low ground work. Don't go up without training. Seriously.
What makes this a new story, or one that is being updated is that OSHA is not looking at the accidents, which is what they were doing before. But that they are now looking at the industry and its practices.
Probably going to boil down to "is there training", and not many would dispute that. But more important, "is there *adequate* training", and OSHA may decide the fatality rate is sufficient proof against.

| Re: Tower Work And the industry is not so much as the utilities where they "own" their employees but rather they "rent" them by the use of contractors. These outfits tend to be small independents.
Unless they can create a culture of long term employees instead of "boomers" they probably will continue to have a high accident rate. It's just the nature of the beast; many of these guys go from job to job to job and don't have the consistancy of a safety culture from a long term employer impressed upon them.

| Lazy attitude and new reporting accident requirements I've been climbing towers since the mid-70s when "free climbing" was the norm. I've seen only thee "incidents". * A fellow climber wrapped his climbing belt around a piece of steel the had nothing below it. If he pulled himself forward allowed his belt to drop off the steel and then let go off his grip, he would have been history. * A tag line broke while pulling up a 500 pound bracket, tossing me to other side of tower. I was belted off, but had the sense to stay belted off when other activities were going on. * Horse ran into a guy wire, knocking me to side of tower.
While reading an article of a guy that was climbing a tower with step bolts, one broke off and he fell to his death. He was using safety gear because everyone else that climbed that tower didn't. That reminded of free-climbing climbing a 700 footer with step bolts, at least I had the sense to keep my belt around a leg.
While watching a oil company training video recently, the climber was racing down the ladder, fully relying on his safety gear to catch him if he missed a step. He assumed his safety gear was operating. When we used to free climb, we didn't trust anything except our common sense...and strong grip.
I mentioned to a safety supervisor once that the number of falls has risen dramatically was the lack of common sense while climbing, although he attributed it to the accident reporting compliance.
When you review the cause of all the reported accidents, the element of common sense was missing. Safety gear works only if you correctly use it.

| Common sense Hey Guys,
I will give you another example of Lacking common sense. at my other job almost a year and a half ago we had a guy who needed to change a light outside, recently the electrican at work had come in a manlift and changed all the outside lights, except this one, because it was in a courtyard and he could not get the lift in there. (Too wide) the guy first got a scaffold and climbed up to change it and couldnt reach it, no problem you would think use a ladder right? then he came out with a ladder and IT couldnt reach it. you would think he would call and try to get a bigger ladder in to change it right? WRONG! This guy and his co worker are standing there talking scractching their heads trying to figure out how to do this. (There was survaleince video we saw almost the whole thing happen) well they ended up getting the scaffold back out, putting the ladder ONTOP of the scaffold at the top he then procedded to climb the scaffold he got up that just fine well he climbed up the ladder and the scaffold tipped over and he landed flat on his face. Needless to say it almost cost him his life. he was in ICU for almost a month. This I am sorry guys is Common sense on this example. Common sense would tell you not to do that. His excuse was he wasnt trained. he still is not normal and its unknown if he will be back to work. As for the survalience video, it doesnt show him tipping over it shows him climbing the ladder the camera pans away for a few seconds then when it comes back hes face down on the ground. (NO I WONT UPLOAD IT SO DONT ASK!!!!!) Its pretty sad to see cause you know whats gonna happen right before it does. but this an example of Not using common sense and theres nothing you can do to teach people common sense!!! I am sorry. if anyone ever figures that out please let me know how to do it.
