Broadband network launches later this month
(old news - 04:49PM Monday Nov 07 2005)
tags: business · wireless · gaming
The Nintendo Wi-Fi/broadband gaming network website went live today, in anticipation of a full launch later this month. The network, for the DS and upcoming Revolution, is accessible via home-broadband connections (see compatible router list) and via partnered access points. The company has been busy, signing access deals with McDonalds and many other vendors, with some 15,000 hotspots prepared - half of those in the UK alone.

Depends on the game. DDR most certainly does not make you fat.

Can't compete with live

Good idea for the portable DS users, but it can't come close to competing with Xbox live. But for those sheltered kids who only get to use nintendo stuff, I doubt they will get it because of parents being anti-internet. Unfortunately for Nintendo, like 80% of their customers are these sheltered kids who have never played an FPS game in their lives.

Who said it was made to compete with Live?

Where do you get your skewed numbers from? Nintendo caters to all crowds not just kids. Who wants to sit and play FPS all day long anyways?

Even if it wasn't designed to, it will make a great competitor. Free online play for first-party titles assures that. A Super Smash Brothers title with free online play at launch is pratically a killer app.

I agree. It's great to see something like this.

How can Tony Hawk and Mario Kart be up ?

They're not due to be released until Nov.14th and 15th, where did the people playing it get their copies??

Re: How can Tony Hawk and Mario Kart be up ?

I noticed that also. Mario Kart isn't due out till 11/16. Either this is employees's kids with advance copies or something is fishy.

Regrading the service, I think it is kind of cool. My 9 year old has been going to nintendowifi.com almost everyday so he will most likely be happy when he sees it is up and running. I just hope some of the DS games he has at home are wifi compatible by full launch. Right now it looks like they only have 2 on site.

Ah, okay, that makes sense, I was wondering about that! I am excited to try this out, it's free at home or at Mickey Dees (I have a couple 8 and 10 miles south of me in Ukiah, and 1 about 14 miles north in Willits), very cool! I'm in there a couple of times a month, now I can play Kart while waiting for my Big Mac!

Handheld online

is just not that appealing to me - and I suspect it's not appealing to many online gamers. One gaming site said Kart was adequately laggy. Since this is a free service, I just don't see them having a solid uptime either. If I want to sit around and have long game sessions with friends, then a 60" HD screen, Xbox360, comfy couch, and a supply of frosty cold beverages is more appealing than this. This is more of a gimicky item - especially with no voice communication for my friends or foes. Too bad Nintendo abandonned their online service for Gamecube in favor of focusing on this.

Re: Handheld online

Let's see here. $6000 TV + $400 XBox360 + $10 beverages + $10 for Xbox Live = $6,420. Or $130 Nintendo DS + Free WiFi + water fountain = $130. I wonder which option will be more popular...

hey bro, you forgot the cost of the comfy couch...

Whether you believe it or not, this service will be immensily popular.

I can't wait to frag all my friends as I sit at the airport/bus stop/backyard pool/etc...

$6000 for a TV set? Um, okay. I guess you must come from the school of thought that cheap is more popular, huh? That's okay. I guess in your world people aspire to live in trailers or cardboard boxes because cheap = popular. In MY world, people aspire to have top-end gear, live in nice homes, drive expensive cars, and wear designer clothes. If price is everything to you, maybe video games aren't a good hobby for you. HDTV and the subsequent peripherals that are coming are well within my budget, so the offering of a handheld online experience holds no interest for me. Regardless, the point here is that just because something is cheap, doesn't make it good. Gamecube was the cheapest home console of this generation, but it's estimated sales in North America put it behind PS2, and possibly even Xbox. This itself verifies that cheap does NOT equal most popular.

IGN had a hands on with Kart and it lagged - badly in parts. This is a bad sign. I personally don't like the fact that it's a free service. There is no such thing as a free lunch in life, and anything that is offered as such usually has a catch. In this case, I suspect that there will be minimal service, and/or if it doesn't work at various hot spots, residential routers, or on various ISPs networks, the response from Nintendo will be "Tough luck, it's free - too bad". Can anyone here imagine being at a McDonalds and the connection won't work? Do you honestly expect connection setup support from the McDonalds cashier?? Here's a hint: the answer is NO!

The reason it was laggy is because they had a few dozen people around just one hot spot playing against other reviewers in similar conditions. No voice communication is just for the early titles, as Nintendo has talked about it. There's a headset port on the underside (?) of the DS.

No WPA sucks

They needed WPA and a browser, unfortunentally, we get neither from them. Anyone know how to set up a segregated network with WEP protections using Windows XP and a spare wifi card? One that can only access the internet and not my LAN?

Drivelyne

@alltel.n

Only WEP support, no thanks...

Well according to the official site their Wi-Fi network only supports WEP...

WEP Key is a security setting for your router. WEP is the only security that is compatible with the Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Connection. You will need to set your router for WEP security -- or remove security on your router -- to use the Nintendo DS at this access point.

Leave it to Nintendo to once again shoot themselves in the foot and show that they are behind technologically. I will not even think about temporarily dumbing down the security on my network just so I can use their online service.

Yeah, there may be ways around it, but you know what... I shouldn't have to buy extra hardware just to isolate the DS from the rest of my network because they were to lazy or dumb to add WPA support.
