The cost of buying the out-of-contract iPhone to avoid having to pay for the 3G data plan would way more than offset the savings of the higher monthly charges... so really the point is you can't buy an iPhone tomorrow if you live in a non-3G area and not get boned. | Re: Huh? said by SSidlov :If you were buying a iPhone or other 3G phone, the ATT people would have no problem giving you a 3G sim. I went from a EDGE phone to a 3G phone (I'm not smug enough and didn't have the $30 required data plan to qualify for a upgrade to an iPhone) and I had to change my old sim for a new one to get HSDPA speeds on the phone.. Though I have heard of people just going in to swap sims (and you need a 3G sim for HSDPA connectivity, I understand) the sim and the IMEI from the phone (whatever kind it is) have to be linked by ATT to give you service. Having used GSM phones for well over a decade, I have never heard of a different type of SIM being needed to access 3G. Its the radio in the phone that accesses the network, not the SIM. Now I have no experience with the iPhone personally, but unless they are using a revolutionary new technology a SIM is a SIM and will work in any phone (locked phones not being applicable of course). -- If history teaches us anything, it teaches that simple-minded appeasement or wishful thinking about our adversaries is folly. -Ronald Reagan-

This is a problem because AT&T and Apple are trying to convince people to toss their old iPhone and buy the new "faster" iPhone in droves. For a large % of people this new phone won't give any significant improvement over their current phone(s)

Alot of towers are owned by independant companies and lease space to the cell providers... so yes, there's a decent chance that if Verizon is on that tower, AT&T could possibly be also. Easiest way is to have a friend over who has AT&T and see if his phone detects 3G coverage.

I joke about it when we go to the park (no service), when we eat at the Cheesecake Factory (no service), when I visit my son's apartment in West Covina (no service) or a handful of other locations. I know I have read some about the city councils put a freeze on new construction until they have a town council meeting where everyone on the council or county board shows up with a cell phone in their pocket or clip complaining that "we don't want no new cell tower because it causes cancer". There are ways to disguise new towers. | The map doesn't show all of the 3G deployed by AT&T That map doesn't show the 3G deployed by their Affiliate, Edge Wireless. Edge was recently bought out by and absorbed into AT&T, and Edge has 3G deployed here in Mendocino County in NW CA, as well as in Humboldt and Lake Counties, in addition they have it deployed in Southern Oregon and Southeastern Idaho. We also have EVDO from Verizon here, they deployed it earlier this year.
Edit-Edge served rural and smaller town markets and did an excellent job of bringing rural areas like mine high tech, towns like Ukiah (8 miles south of me) have 3G from AT&T (former Edge Wireless), and it's less than 20,000 in population, where towns of 100,000, like Redding (Northern Sacramento Valley) are still without it.

| 3g service is ok. i live 20 miles east of the ny state capitol and we have 3G. but verizon has offered EDVO Rev A for a while now. at&t is a little slow in the game which is bad seeing how they have the largest network of people in the U.S. and the most cash flow. back a coupld years ago i would go crazy when i saw 3G in new york and parts of new jersey. i had a cu500 (still do) which was one of the first 3G phones that was on the Cingular network. my phone says Cingular as does my cingular 8525 by HTC. the 3G network is ok at best. I still don't see a huge improvement over at&t's edge network. I do however see a huge decrease in performance on the 3G network compared to Verizon's EDVO Rev A network. 3G is a new but old technology. now im used to seeing "3G" next to the bars on my phone. it just uses more battery in my opinion. & I use the internet everyday on my phone, plus i tether with my laptop.
at&t is the deathstar.
they are going to sell millions of iPhone 3G's and people are really upgrading for NO reason at all. i mean there are a few other improvements but nothing to trade your old iPhone in for.

So yeah, more users upgrading for a network that doesn't deliver is going to generate a huge number of complaints. Maybe it'll even get the network fixed?

I just hope they will incorporate the way Alltel does things. With Alltel we get unlimited tether data, Unlimited EV-DO card data that we can put in our routers too. I don't think I take advantage of the service. My average monthly data is under 20 GB from two devices. I would think everyone would want to see Verizon embrace the Alltel model to force their own cell providers to compete. Or at least come up with some fair data plans. Rogers can somehow now offer 6 GB data plan for $30 for Canada's iphone market, and the #1 and #2 American cell providers can't beat that for $60.
Too many people need to quit drinking the corporate cool-aid. They don't have your best interest at heart. They just want as much of our money for as little service as possible.
Is there really that much wrong with fair pricing in our capitalist market? It used to work just fine.
