Twitter, Facebook support and Internet video
(old news - 04:55PM Friday Mar 13 2009)
tags: Fiber · business · hardware · TVIP
ReadWriteWeb has a good look at the upcoming Internet functionality Verizon is planning to offer via their FiOSTV set top boxes. FiOS DVRs are supposed to see new functionality this summer that allows them access to Internet video (via YouTube and similar portals) directly through the settop. This fall, Verizon is expected to integrate Facebook and Twitter functionality, along with a number of other useful "widgets." Users have been closely tracking the Verizon IMG evolution in our Verizon FiOSTV forum. Both AT&T and Verizon are obviously hoping that by being the first to market with additional Internet functionality, they can draw more customers over from cable competitors.

The evolution to...

IPTV.

Was there ever a doubt in any of our minds? When will VZ start sprouting content sites, like ATT and Comcast?

Do you think people like having the "media room" and the "office"? I can see why people would want these seperate (working from home v.s. movies with the kids)

I don't know about them, but I do know that YouTube on my Series 3 TiVo kicks serious ass.

Re: The evolution to...

if Verizon allows people to watch YouTube in the 720p HD format, then that's something different despite it being a year late

Re: The evolution to...

That would be interesting but TiVo still had YouTube first (and with the new TiVo search it's pretty slick).

Also it's not hard to implement 720p on TiVo for YouTube because they already do netflix in 720p and use the same decoder that they use for YouTube.

How many YouTube videos do you think are actually uploaded in 720p? I doubt it's very many.

TiVo has this

TiVo has had YouTube capability for almost a year now.

Facebook and Twitter TiVo doesn't have, but it's not something I really care about.

But listen to this - even if TiVo doesn't have it today, someone can write a HME app to make the functionality available. Try THAT on a FiOS DVR!

Agreed!

Also: HTPC - Can play anything from anywhere on the internet right on the ole TV.

Can even use a laptop as the "remote"!
Stream music, video, Youtube, DSLReports, check email, anything!

Re: TiVo has this

Tivo's biggest advantage is cablecard support. If there was a half decent cablecard tuner available that didn't force you to buy a whole new PC from the likes of Dell or HP I would jump on the HTPC bandwagon really fast.

Without cablecard or a cableco STB I can't decode three quarters of the HD channels I pay for.

Re: TiVo has this

IR Blaster.
It allows you to change channels on a cable/sat box with the computer's remote control.
Or, just use it as a secondary input - HDMI 2.
Cable box for cable and Channel 1 On Demand, HTPC for DVD/Blu-ray/Internet/video files...

Either way...

Re: TiVo has this

Yeah I prefer a neat all in one solution.

TiVo does most of what I need a HTPC to do in one neat box. No blasters to worry about.

Besides with a lifetime sub and cable cards that I bought outright, it costs less per month than paying $10 for a Cable STB and there's much less lag when changing channels. Not to mention that dual tuners will cost $20 if I rent two cable STBs.

Most bang for my buck, IMO.

watch with baited breath..

IF Verizon can make these widgets user friendly, the cable companies will be ready to jump on the widget bandwagon during their docsis 3.0 upgrades. among those interested would probably be cablevision, time warner, & comcast.

Just a thought....

I think this is part of the problem with companies. Too many of them are trying to do too much and not focusing on the important parts of their business. Mainly their customer base and basic services.

Re: Just a thought....

This is the new form of competition. Gone are the days of competing on price. It's more economically sound for companies to compete based on service additions/enhancements than to initiate a price war.

Does this mean they will keep the no cap?

I mean if it(youtube) is built into their system, y would they cap u for it? I mean sure they may loose some cash, but you most likely have to pay for said box, and if they kept the no cap it would make the cablecos vid systems look bad, as they DO count against a cap.

they could cap it because they can say "well just because we give you access doesn't mean you have to use it"

It's that simple.

Yes, but they could do major damage to cable AND get more money if they charge for the service.

Still I would like to. I know I would best out the other ISPs. a 1tb cap no throttle and ul speed no less than 50% of the dl speeds. ie 50/25 10/5 100/50.

Re: Does this mean they will keep the no cap?

not possible without a cap or something else. you'd spend more than what yo made unless your prices where starting at $60+ per month. and used Cogent for bandwidth.

Re: Does this mean they will keep the no cap?

Oops.. I forgot to put the 500gb or 1tb cap in there. It depend on how much they want to pay base for 500g 20 more for 1gb 40(or maybe more or less depending on what I have to pay)) more for no cap. And I do plan to use Cognet, the ISP I have now does so I know it works well. I plan to have slower packages ie 10/5 5/2.5 3/1.5. I was just using the higher ones because I like those #s.

The cable companies believe that a 250GB, 100GB or even 40 and 20GB cap is enough for most users and anyone who goes above that is "abusing" the network.

Re: Does this mean they will keep the no cap?

And that is where FiOS can make money, IF they play their cards right. Once every1 hates caps and want them more like Japan's(1tb) OR no caps at all, the ISPs who have no caps will get a big boost in customers.

CAPPING your internet so they can make room for it as part of the network suddenly is congested and thus now to get anything you have to have a ridiculous cap.

What a freakin' waste of bandwidth

For pete's sake... I thought this was what computers were fore...

And just how much is this little (unwanted) going to cost?

Honestly, if they'd just do what they do best and not try to make the TV side all things to all people I'd be a lot freakin' happier.

Hmmmm... did Vz get any of the TARP money and is this where they are spening it?

Remember internet TV from the nineties. Please leave TV to televisions and internet to my computer.

All this crap is going to do is increase prices someday. Put in another few hundred miles of fiber with the money instead of internet TV.

ARG what about all the other FiOS problems!

I just wish I would stop seeing story's like this. Verizon needs to STOP with this crap and concentrate on the hundreds of other bugs with there STB software. How about fixing the biggest bug, the crappy SD picture quality that we have had to deal with for months now on the HD STB's. And yes before anyone says it I know there rolling out the fix for it however its a fix that should not have taken months to be released and seeing as how many people including myself still do not the fix I still consider it an unfixed bug.

Every time Verizon has rolled out a new software package to there boxes they break numerous other things and from the best anyone can tell they do not ever bother to test the software they release. For them to be spending time on this kind of crap just shows how out of touch they are with there customers issues with the service, they either need to fix there software before starting things like this or they need to get a deal with TiVO or another company that can actually design decent guide software that does not crash the box's, degrade the picture quality, and the numerous other bugs that they have created.

I totally hear you, but in their defense (and I hate to defend them), it's probably an entirely seperate team that is working on adding this functionality.

You can say that VZ should then instead take those people and have them help work on fixing the existing bugs, but being a software engineer myself, I can tell you that adding more people to a software project does not automatically mean things will be produced faster or work better. In fact...it could make things worse...much worse.

So, in this case, I'm happy VZ is having other groups working on adding new features. But I too wish they would get their act together on the existing issues.

Clueless sometimes...

But really, the games have got to go! Cut your loses now Verizon, before you really dig a hole with these useless "games".

Otherwise Youtube HD would be nice on my LCD.

Include a 16x9 Guide with these "features" and we got something cookin people.

Verizon haters are funny.

All these comments complaining about nothing. It's not even out of beta yet. It's a widget. How much are you paying for the widgets you got now? Exactly. And you talk about caps? Everyone on Fios that's been capped, please raise your hands.

Talking about fix this first, fix that first. Verizon is a business. The small number of users that want to leave because they can't wait for the SD fix is NOTHING compared to the amount of NEW customers that will see the new features as the winning point to push them off the wire and into Fios land. I'm not a Verizon Fanboy, but I understand business, and I know a good thing when i see it, and the service is great. Far from perfect, but not so broken I have to whine about the minutiae.

I think it's pretty rotten that businesses can leave a core part of their product broken and still charge full price for service.

what nobody is talking about

from the article

quote:
When the new software launches, Verizon FiOS DVRs will stream software from YouTube, DailyMotion, Break.com, Blip.tv, and Veoh. The format conversion that makes this possible actually takes place on a computer connected on the home network running Verizon Media Manager software, not on the DVR itself.
in other words, you need to have your computer turned on in order to use this functionality. Also you're probably going to need to be subscribed to the higher end dvr package (home media dvr @ $19.99) to probably take advantage of this.

that kinda sucks.

I just wish it would to come to areas where there is no competition for Comcast. I live in Danbury Ct, there is no Fios or Uverse so Comcast does nothing for there customers because they don't have to. Where is the competitive market. Comcast has a hugh Monopoly in large areas and it is unfair.

Re: what nobody is talking about

I am another big TiVO guy here I just wish they werent so darn expensive. Recently they added dolby digitial and HD to their systems so I am happy about that. I have series 1 and a series 2 - found some great sites for tweaking these boxes but it is not easy and takes patience.

I also have a htpc and use the xbox 360 as an extender. I took it to the next level and incorporated ORB into the mix. All of that is a great combination and you can watch anything internet related on the tv.

I would like to see what FIOS can do, I just hope it is vigorously tested before its released. I can wait for it to be right. However I dont think it will replace the htpc.

Nice butt...

How about using the whole screen real estate for HD sets (16:9). The Media Manager functionality is in SD ratio (4:3) so it looks feels like mid 90s tech. When testing the video with FiOS MR-DVR it was nice but it was bothersome that there is no option to fill the screen for HDTVs...outside the artificial stretching settings on the box or TV. People shouldn't get their hope up to high, this isn't going to be a Popcorn Hour, HTPC equivalent.

Re: Just 2 things missing...

Adding netflix might kill Verizon's own on demand offerings so they may not be too keen on that unless there was more money to be earned. However, judging by Verizon's track record they don't seem to be too willing to release something innovative if it might eat into their profits elsewhere. For example look at their canceled wifi project because it potentially took away business from Verizon wireless broadband access, and still no decent VOIP service because it kills their POTS. FiOS Digital Voice probably still have all the junk taxes and fees added onto it too if it ever does get released.

Who f*ing cares?!

Quit integrating these useless internet communities into my cable box. I'm perfectly fine avoiding these time-wasting activities on my laptop. Do me a HUGE favor and enable expansion on the DVR so I can add my own external hard drive. Or create a 16x9 guide. There's a multitude of things that NEED to be implemented on FiosTV before any of this crap.
