Netflix making huge strides as broadband video player...

An anonymous source tells Multichannel News that Netflix will soon bring their popular broadband video streaming service to both the Nintendo Wii and the Apple iPhone. Netflix continues to expand its broadband-connected device footprint, already offering streaming service via PC, Mac, the Xbox 360, Roku set top, TiVo DVRs, Internet-connected Blu-ray players from LG Electronics and Samsung and TVs from Sony and LG.

Of course just like the Slingbox and Skype apps for the iPhone, the iPhone streaming service will likely be crippled over 3G to not compete with AT&T's own planned place-shifting iPhone/U-Verse offerings protect the AT&T network from evil. Not that AT&T has any say in that sort of thing, right AT&T?

How about improving selection

Doesn't matter how many devices you put your platform on when your downloadable/playable selection is so outdated. Blockbuster - you want to compete with Netflix, allow all new releases to be streamed.

its not netflix/blockbuster that has that control. It's the content owners.

All cable operators have their new release available same day as DVD.

Different type of business though. Cable operators may have new released available as Pay Per View on the day of the DVD release. But they don't have new releases as part of the free or premium movie channel VOD selection. If Netflix charged a fee for their instant programming, then a comparison could be drawn. But as it is now, the two are just two different business models.

I think the idea is to use Netflix streaming to supplement the DVD subscription. I don't understand what is wrong with having a huge archive of recent to very old content available instantly at the push of a button at no additional cost. New releases are far overrated. If you've waited long enough for the DVD to come out before you see the film, you can certainly wait a few more weeks until Netflix sends you the DVD. Granted you can't watch DVDs on a phone, but why in the hell would would anybody want to do that in the first place?

Re: How about improving selection

That's exactly how I use it. There are many old movies and TV shows I want to watch, and streaming fits the bill. I have lots of old shows queued up, and I will sit down and watch one when I want to watch TV but don't have time for a movie. I'm then free to use my DVD rentals for things not available on streaming.

And it makes my wife very happy that Quincy is available to stream.

PS3 would be nice, please.

I really wish they would do this for the PS3. I also wish that Hulu still worked on the PS3. Why all the hate?

As an owner of ps3 I agree. They need to atleast pro actively update their browsers. Then again, Hulu only works for US so the majority of ps3 owners are in Asia and Europe.

I have a Wii, PS3 and a Xbox360 in my house. The PS3 is my personal console of choice mainly because it does damn near anything...except for the two things I really want it to do, play hulu and netflix.

Right now I connect a laptop to my TV when I want to watch netflix. I have been "window shopping" on the net to build a ION based HD media PC (the Zotac mobos look really good, IMO) but the total cost for that build is still hovering around $400 range and that's too costly ATM.

Re: PS3 would be nice, please.

Or you could get a Roku box for $100. I happened to win one in an online contest and it looks quite nice. Right now it only does Amazon VOD and Netflix, but they've promised more content. (There are even rumors of Hulu coming to the Roku box, but I wouldn't hold my breath.)

I thought about that but being a hard-core utilitarian, I didn't want to spend $100 on a one trick pony. I'll either wait till the cost to build a HDMI ION box hits around $300 or wait till they add the functionality to the PS3. I like the PS3 option best because it costs the least for me

There was a thread sort of on this topic over at AVSForum earlier this week. It seemed that the Ion wasn't that much lower powered then one of the 45W AMD CPUs, but didn't have as much horsepower for anything beyond the most basic 1080P content.

If you put Ubunto or yellow Dog Linux on your ps3 which ps3 has officially made easy to do you can play Hulo on your ps3 no problem. Just a pain in the ass to learn how to install shit at first

I think the ps3 may be a while. It will happen, but it will take time. I think the wii got it first because of the sales, I mean look at the wii sales #s then look ps3's #s.

I aggree... It would be awesome to be able to stream Netflix on my PS3. I looked into a program called PlayOn that makes it possible by basically streaming it to your PC, then streaming it again to the PS3 in a different format, but its an added cost that I can't justify. Sony won't do it because they want people to pay to stream movies on the Playstation Store. I would do that if they had the selection Netflix does and I could watch an unlimited amount of movies for a flat monthly fee, but nooooo... Sony charges by the movie and it's still cheaper to go and rent it from the video store in most cases. Likewise, I would go out and buy a Netflix-streaming device if they made every title (including new releases) available via streaming.

Oh well...

The PS3 can do this now--sort of. Problem is, it requires another computer and PlayOn.»www.themediamall.com/playon

I found it while searching for anything suggesting the PS3 might do native Netflix streaming. It's inexpensive software that may eventually be obsolete but it works quite well for my purposes.

It can stream NetFlix to pretty much any UPnP or DLNA device and does the same with Hulu and Youtube. Amazon video is in beta and I don't think fully functional right now but I guess they'll get there.

In addition, they just added a beta feature to stream your local video and audio content to the same devices. In fact, I've found it much more compatible with devices than both TVersity and Twonky but it doesn't do everything they do.

It also "mostly" works with the DirecTV HR2x players. They're the only UPnP/DLNA devices it's acted a little flaky with and I believe it's DTV's issue not PlayOn's. The PS3 works great with it.

If they get a decent web interface to allow remote streaming of local music/video on PCs and not just standard UPnP/DLNA devices, I'll probably ditch TVersity and Twonky altogether.

This can be done now with Play on and an add-on called Play It. Full 10 ft remote interface with the Linksys extender.

AT&T doesn't want to play nice, then let's split it again!

Since AT&T simply doesn't want to play nice, why doesn't the government give them a taste of their own medicine.

Why not split AT&T again, this time around not into 7 baby bells, let's make it 20, so that it takes them not 20 but 40 years to "regroup" itself again as the death star.

Verizon should be split into at least 3 as well.

Actually "giving them a taste of their own medicine" would not be breaking them up but blocking the CEO's mobile device from doing ANYTHING over the 3G network (email, internet). .

But, yeah I agree AT&T should be split up again. It was split for a reason, and now its "regrouped" - time to lower the axe on this monopoly .

Awesome

Gives me a reason to turn my Wii on again. I havent played it in forever. Dont have to move the 360 from room to room anymore either. I wonder if the Wii will be able to do anything that resembles High Def...

But the question remains... How did MLB get away with it?

Interesting

I wonder if, for the Wii, it will be a disk that you purchase from netflix or a program that you purchase (or download for free) from the Wii Shop Channel?

Time will tell.

Despite the fact that I have the Samsung BD-P2550 and it works extremely well, it would be rather nice to have it on another device, to be used elsewhere in my home.
