story category Netflix Streaming Coming To PS3 In November
No longer just an XBox 360 exclusive...
01:25PM Monday Oct 26 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: Video · business · alternatives · content
According to a post over at the Playstation Blog, Netflix broadband video streaming -- currently the exclusive territory of Microsoft's Xbox 360 -- will be coming to the Playstation 3 in November. Interestingly, a post over at the Netflix website indicates that PS3 users will need a free DVD in order to make the functionality work -- at least until the next PS3 system update comes along and embeds it via broadband. Those interested can also check out this press release.

Re: Wii?

It can do 480p....which is perfectly sufficient. I would rather have 480p streaming on the wii than no streaming at all.

Also, there's a rumor of a new Wii HD upgrade in the works...

Re: Wii?

I think 480p is standard def. Maybe DVD quality.
HD starts at 720 however, 1080 is what we want.

Why not? If the processor can handle the task, why not? The Wii is the console that "non-gamers" get, and could easily introduce people to the idea of using their internet connection for more than just email and the occasional porn.

Because when the video isn't what people expect, Netflix will get blamed and not the beloved Wii (I'm a Wii owner too).

Yes the only console that isn't even capable of playing a DVD isn't getting streaming right now. Go figure!

Wait. What? The Wii can't play DVDs. Unless you're running some homebrew stuff. I thought the PS3 can play DVDs, no?

The Wii is perfectly capable of playing DVDs. Nintendo didnt include that in the north american version. Its all software.

Re: Wii?

exactly.

Wii *can* play DVD, but nintendo doesn't want it to by default. it's not a hardware issue that it can't do it for.

my guess on this is they're holding out so they can say streaming netflix is another new feature of the next-yet-to-be-announced-but-highly-speculated-2010-release wii. of course there's also speculation that there won't actually be a new wii release in 2010, but instead will be a hardware "upconvert" which allows new features... (which, even though netflix could happen on the unit now, could still be added as a feature of even an 'upconvert').

It doesnt matter what the reason is, whether it be hardware, software, or the weather. (Though I did not know it was restricted in the US).

The point is plain and simple: I cannot put a DVD into my Wii and play it. I have to have another external DVD player connected to my TV to watch a DVD without having the modify the system beyond the basic menu options provided by the manufacturer.

And from what I've read, no dumb fee

X360 requires a $50/yr XBL gold subscription in addition to the normal Netflix monthly fee.

Neither will those "un-fees" on phone bills, but no one likes them either. This will be great for those who already have Netflix and a PS3 and those who love to watch movies and were thinking about getting a Netflix account.

I personally find the PSN more than adequate for my movie-watching lifestyle. But the more options the better.

Right. Would free be better? Sure. But I spend more than $50 in coffee a month and get less.

Just like I only pay $10 to $14 for every 1600 MS points I get. I buy them when they are on sale.

yes yes check everyday for a sale that may happen once every 3 months. Some people like to buy stuff when they want to buy it. Not make it a hobby.

Also you assume everyone is some single loner living in his basement. Even at $25 of you have one account for the parents and they have 3 kids that's 4 XBL gold accounts and that's $100 year even on your bargain hunt. over 6 years that's $600. I could buy 2 more PS3s with that.

That is a good idea because you will be using those extra PS3s to play with the other people in your household since no one else will be using one. I prefer my highly competitive bigger online gaming crowd.

No I don't assume a loner. Your average family with a 360 is not going to have four gold accounts. Most will have one or possibly two gold accounts and the rest will be silver accounts.
And besides with one gold accout you can play with multiple people online with that machine. I see it everytime I play multiplayer online. Other people have multiple people playing on one machine under the same account.

And I don't sit here and wait for a sale. When I see a sale going on I buy a bunch of the cards to cover me for a while. they have sales several times throughout the year. With XBL I bought enough to cover me for three years and my girlfriend for one. For points I bought enough to cover me for at least 12 months. Since I use XBL points for music with my ZUNE, videos on the Zune and 360, and games on the 360.
By getting them on sale I save up to 50%. And when I'm talking several hundred dollars, I would rather spend $200 on MS points than $400.
Unless you just like paying the retail price for everything you purchase which would be highly unusual.

Like with Windows 7. Why would I wait to pay the full retail price of Home Premium for $120? I preordered mine during the Summer when they were $50.

Here's to not having to pay Microsoft $50 for the privilege of paying Netflix.

And 1 million, 100 million, I don't play online titles on my consoles so I could care less about the "community" of XBL or PSN. I use the network functionality to grab demos and use the consoles as media center extenders, that's it.

For online gaming I stick to PC as console FPSes suck.

Re: And from what I've read, no dumb fee

Because Microsoft insisted on $50 per year for me to use Netflix on my XBL even if I didn't want to use any online gaming features. That additional fee equates to a 46% increase in monthly Netflix cost.

No fuss now that Sony will allow me to use Netflix over a console without paying $50 per year extra.

Right....and XBL is just for gaming. Free content, map packs etc. Being able to watch other videos, rent movies and TV programs. I have some friends that don't use XBL for gaming online at all but use it more for a media center to rent movies.

Re: And from what I've read, no dumb fee

You don't have to have a Gold account to rent movies. You don't have to have a Gold account to get demos. You don't have to have a Gold account to rent TV shows. You don't have to have a Gold account to get map packs.

Gold gets you video chat, online play (obviously) and Netflix, that's about it. The free Silver account gets you everything else. Netflix should be a Silver (Free) feature as it will soon be with the PS3.

The $50 is for the Gold account, not "XBL". You can get most XBL features without forking over $50 every year. Everything you mention (rentals, map packs etc) can be had using a Silver account.

I don't use online play with my X360 and always thought it silly that Microsoft extort $50/mo from X360 owners who want to use Netflix with the 360. The two services are completely unrelated. If it were $50 and it included say, 2-3 hours of Netflix a month for "free" as a loss leader to get people to sign up for Netflix great. But this is just fleecing of users and it is nice to see Sony isn't going to follow suit.

And PC online gaming (aside from sports) smokes them both.

XBL should have nothing to so with Netflix just like MCE has nothing to so with XBL. It's simply a feature of the console.

Oh no! $50 a year!!! That's a whole 13 cents a day for an unlimited service. A pretty good deal, espcially considering that the people who have xbox360's and want xbl have disposable incomes since they need broadband, money for the console and money for the game.

Re: And from what I've read, no dumb fee

What unlimited service? I don't play online titles with my X360. I have no interest in XBL. The $50 in my case is for allowing Netflix and NOTHING else and I'm happy that I'm not longer going to fork over $50 to Ballmer.

$0.13/day to simply have the right to access Netflix IMO is dumb. That $50 is $50 more than Sony is going to charge for Netflix access.

You may be in to wasting money, but I'm not. PS3's opening Netflix for FREE as opposed to Microsoft charging $50 a year, I'll simply be turning off the X360, canceling XBL renewal and running the PS3.

Since you are a philanthropist, why not just give Ballmer a $100 a year for XBL. I mean, it's only $0.011/hr.

What I would kill to have on the PS3...

I would love to have an HD tuner add-on to turn the PS3 into a DVR.... That would pretty much make the PS3 indispensable to any digital home.

I find myself using it more for it's media features than gaming... I don't game as much as I used to back in the day.

and now I kind of want a PS3!

One thing I don't get is why the app isn't able to be downloaded.
Guess it must take a full system update to integrate it?

Also, I wonder what the quality will be like - if they'll use the Silverlight streams or the (much better quality, IMO) WMV streams... I do know that ps3s can play WM Audio (non-protected I think), so I wonder if they'll just integrate the Microsoft DRM to its existing codecs or if it'll actually be a Silverlight install... If it's the latter, I wonder if it'll look any good on a TV (HD or not).

Either way, cool news for the PS3 ...Kind of want one anyway, and this is one more good thing going for it. Would also be nice to not have to pay extra. I personally don't game online with my 360. Half the reason I even got one was for Netflix though, so I've been paying for "gold" membership just to stream movies through it...

Re: Dammit.

I got one last month (won it in an online contest) and it's great. My kids even ask to watch Roku over regular cable TV. (I've even contemplated canceling cable. Would save us $75 a month!)

Just an FYI: PlayOn does this already....its not directly to the PS3, so you have to have a PC inline, but they've offered this for a long time.

But you can't get it in HD that way.

playon is crap, its barely worked with netflix the last couple of months and besides netflix streaming to ps3 and wii everything else it does can be done much better with free dlna servers

Re: Just an FYI: PlayOn does this already

It's been working fine for me. It sucks with my DirecTV HR-21s, but that's a DirecTV issue, not PlayOn.

I've even used it with an Archos 5 player.

I got an email from them today hinting that they're gearing up for some major updates to the product as well. If they can get it to perform all of the same functions as TVersity, I'll have no need for Tversity anymore since it doesn't stream Netflix (at least presently).

PlayOn costs money. Now you don't need it to stream NetFlix on the PS3 as it can be done for free (well... with a NetFlix account).

I use PlayOn and TVersity as well and have had no issues that aren't attributable to low bandwidth or high latency (which is almost always the case with my "broadband" wireless).
Also, PlayOn lets me watch my Hulu lists. (TVersity gives you Hulu as well, but only the generic lists - no login).

Oh, yeah, and I have access to my extensive MP3 and video selection - through either TVersity or PlayOn...using library "folders" through the XMB interface instead of just filesystem folders you'd get using a USB drive.

You get what you pay for.

Nice, but not new

It's nice that the PS3 will get Netflix as a semi-native app, but it isn't new. The Playon server works with Netflix quite well.

The Disc-Process is temporary

They are implementing Netflix into the XMB and will be available as a firmware upgrade. The disc process seems to be just a stop-gap measure to get the process going while the firmware gets tested and QCed...

Don't have to buy a 360 and a PS3 now!

Glad I don't have to buy a 360 (netflix and gears of war) and a PS3 (blu-ray, distributed computing, and games) now!

Might anyway, always love fun new toys tho, but it means the wife gets to spend money too...

Re: Don't have to buy a 360 and a PS3 now!

I debated on getting both and did after awhile. I am very happy with my decision

I use the PS3 for Blu-Ray and games
I use the 360 for Live and games

Both have great features, Both are worth their prices

I use the Roku to stream now. Will move that to the kids game room. I have the PS3 in my command center. Yes now I can stream. Though I was going to have to move the Wii but the PS3 gets the nod first. Good job!!!

Netflix Streaming Coming to PS3

Nice! Hopefully this will force the Play Station Network to re-evaluate their price structure and/or the length of time you have available to view the movies you rent.

HD really isn't HD, I have the Roko too, HD just means slightly better picture quality, High Def.

I don't know about the Roku box, but on TiVo, Netflix streams HD (720p), granted it's nowhere near the quality you'd get from blu-ray, but it is technically HD.

Re: is HD confirmed for the PS3 ????

The uncompressed results might be at the resolution and frame rate, but the device (roku/tivo) is making half of the information up. It is similar to upconverting dvd players, the information just isn't there to produce that resolution.

Remember when DirecTv used to transmit HD channels and now they are HD-Lite, the same thing.

There's nothing in the HD standard that says HD has to be a specific bit rate, only the resolution and frame rate are specified. So for all intents and purposes Netflix is HD (as was DirecTv and is Comcast's HD).

There's nothing to "make up" since the video is already at the right resolution, there's simply less detail in the picture. It's like comparing cable or OTA HD to blu-ray. Both are HD, but blu-ray looks better.

As for Netflix, it can come close to cable and OTA HD quality do to the fact that it uses VC-1AP which is a more advanced codec than MPEG-2 and also that they optimize their video encodes.

Can you play movies from Sony Studios

on the 360? I was under the impression you could not. If not, and if you can on the PS3, I may get a PS3 just for more movie selections.

Finally

First, let it be known that I own a PS3, Xbox 360, and a Wii. I have also had a Netflix account for over a year now. I very rarely play games online, so I do not have an Xbox Live Gold account. I did stream using my 360 with my free month and it was ok. I use my PC for streaming most of the time (it's hooked up to a 42" LCD 1080p TV) but with the inception of Silverlight, I can no longer play World of Warcraft, or do anything else for that matter, on my monitor and Stream at the same time on my HDTV (in fullscreen mode, anyway). This will make it so that I can stream via my PS3 and play WoW, or do anything else I want to, at the same time, just like I want to and used to be able to before Netflix switched to Silverlight. I too hope they have HD streaming available to those of us who would like to use their PS3s for this.

I also wanted to note the best statement in the press release, next to the actual announcement of Netflix on the PS3. This is where Sony is better than Microsoft in this case:

Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system's Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.
Whereas I remember having to add to my Queue on my PC and then being able to stream it to the 360. This was annoying.

This is no longer the case on the xbox... you can browse and such from the interface.
