The NTIA today announced that the agency has awarded the first four grants under NTIA's State Broadband Data and Development Grant Program to fund broadband mapping efforts in California, Indiana, North Carolina, and Vermont. According to an agency statement, The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) was awarded $1.8 million; the Indiana Office of Technology (IOT) was awarded $1.3 million; the Rural Economic Development Center, Inc. (e-NC Authority) was awarded $1.6 million; and the Vermont Center for Geographic Information (VCGI) was awarded $1.2 million. According to the NTIA, the four recipients submitted "well-formed proposals that are both fiscally prudent and serve as a model for others."

Where will this money go, and how do we track it?

Subject says it all, while all the agency statement says:

quote:
... Awardees are required to contribute at least 20 percent non-federal matching funds toward project costs. ...

You can track broadband grants on this map:

»broadbandsearch.sc.egov.usda.gov···ram=ARRA

You can click on options to see APPROVED & Pending applications for stimulus funds.

I already have (using Linux + Firefox), the latest version of moonlight doesn't work with their map. My *feedback* was a very long, detailed, technical message so they actually called me and I'm helping them work on an alternative for the rest of us not trapped in the MS universe.

If the rest of the stimulus money used so far

If the rest of the stimulus money used so far is any indication, some of that money will help fund research on how grandparents influence the adoption of internet connections or something just as stupid.

Millions of dollars have been used to make signs that say "This project is being paid by stimulus money", other billions have been put on such gems as "tunnel for turtles", "skylights for liquor warehouse" and "airport that gets 20 passengers/day".

So forgive me if I'm not rejoicing about the spending on Broadband.

What's stupid is how we got here and no protections put back in place to prevent this from happening again.

That would be for the Comcast turtle, so it qualifies under the broadband grant, naturally.

First off, Grandma needs to be studied. Grandmas wonder what that magical box is with all the images and flashy things. Second, the point of "project money" is to make it your own pet project. No one said it had to be spent wisely. This is after all, government funds. There are unlimited amounts of money where they came from, should you blow through the first set. Tax payers are cash cows. So have at it with trial and error. No protections needed. If you feel like giving your CEO 100 million dollar raise for coming into work with the money, have at it. You'll simply get more.

Worried about customer protections and rights. Hah, this is the USA. You've got lawyers and lobbyists to make sure that doesn't happen.

At the end of the day, enjoy your windfall. Laugh at the tax payers, and smile you live in the U.S.A. Land of no accountability and endless misspending on projects that will never be fulfilled or done in a timely manner!!

I just love it when everyone thinks Grandmas/Grandpas are that stupid. Nice try. Most know how a TV and/or VCR works, inside and out. Most even repair and upgrade their own computers. Amazing, eh?

It just proves how ignorant some people are, especially when some grandparents are in their 40's and 50's. Maybe a few in their 30's.

Re: If the rest of the stimulus money used so far

IF you grew a thicker skin, you would have noticed that the point was not the grandparents, but the use of the money.

Stimulus money was supposed to be used to "immediately create jobs"... Not only was the American public stupid enough to actually think that government spending creates jobs, the rats in congress are bold enough to dole out the money to stuff that won't even create the illusion of being related to job creation.

So yeah, you're right. Grandparents are not all stupid technophobes. Then again, we all knew that already.

Right Wing Jackasses who Get us into Wars. Created 90 percent of the 10 trillion Deficit (6 Under Bush), and Gave out the First 700 Billion Stimulus...... Meet Left Wing Jackasses who Can't think of their own Ideas so simply reuse the BAD ONES from the right.

Easier Put.. Old boss meet new, same as the first.....It's politics. Nothing changes by party. Both simply suck.

100 years ago someone said that about providing your great grandparents access to electricity. How'd that work out?

Um,

So you really NEED to study the obvious, ay? I mean are we that brain dead as a society that we can't realize that CERTAIN facets of our lives are better without PISSING away millions to find out about it?

P.S. You have the tax Payers to thank for your electricity via the Tennessee Valley Authority.... I guarantee you when they went to do that in the 30s and 40s, they didn't spend years questioning if people WANTED and NEEDED electricity =).

Congrats to you. Meanwhile, I sit here in Baltimore County staring 1 block down in both directions at those who have FiOS and for me who cannot get it since Verizon decided they weren't going to build out that extra block.

So good for you. Like I said, I get the funds and I'll dig the ditches and lay the fiber personally.

Same here bud. Only replace Ohio with MD and I'm with ya. We are surrounded by broadband here. Cable to our north, DSL to our south, FiOS east and mobile broadband west yet we are stuck on Hughes. I'll lay the copper, fiber, coax, put up the poles etc. just bring something out here.

Where the heck are you, appalachia? Then again, it took freaking Time Warner like 5 years to rewire my area and get cable internet in. Ah yes, a snails pace wins the race. Especially, when there is no competition to make you hurry faster.

It depends where you are in California. It's a long state with a lot of nooks and crannys.

Re: California?

Better than my state. Most of it is ranchers that would *love* to get broadband, but the Telcos are too damn cheap to even put up a wireless tower.

So.. They're stuck on crappy dialup, and I mean crappy.. 24kbps if you're lucky.

In California, if the local telco offers DSL, they're allowed to block any other DSL from entering the area. That allows them to charge whatever they want to charge for DSL service. Wireless ISP's, like Digitalpath, are not blocked as they use no cable or co-axial to provide service. I lucked out. I've been using Digitalpath since 2003. It's faster than DSL and uses no cable at all.

that at least half the money will go directly into the pockets of various executives who already earn ridiculous amounts of money. One quarter will go to "studies", and the remaining to actually doing something useful.
