Moving BitTorrents into the mainstream

Apple TV may be “new and improved” and TiVo may be bringing YouTube videos to your television but neither of these has what the new product Myka has: straight-to-your-TV BitTorrent downloads. Myka is a set-top box “with HDTV resolutions up to 1080i available” and the potential to play back Blu-Ray torrents.

There have been suggestions that a product such as this one could significantly boost the average consumer’s interest in the BitTorrent movement. However, it’s also been noted that major companies impacted by the product could fight against it and that they may have a leg to stand on since the legality of the product could come into question. The product isn’t on the market yet but should be soon and is expected to be priced just slightly higher than the Apple TV.

While this sounds cool, it may get sued out of existence...

This isn't the debate about an MP3 player. I highly doubt the *AA's will let this become a reality.

If Myka attempts to bring a product to market, I expect to see the media Luddites attack Myka in an instant. Their lawyers will be on Myka like a school of Piranhas.

I`d buy one !

This is exactly what I`ve been looking for, finally someone giving people what we really want (hopefully x264 support will be in the package soon

Right now instead of burning DvDs or cds, I download xvid or divx tv serieas and movies using bittorrent. In order to play it back on my tv, I use a 4 gb pendrive plugged into my phillips dvd player. Although it works fine , I like the idea of a set top box better than my current setup.

I was thinking in building a htpc so I can get playback of all formats out there, but if a set top box will be selling shortly I might wait a little bit.

Note : It is not illegal to download bittorrent files in this country, as long as I dont sell and profit from it the local authorities wont be looking for me

You don't have to sell and profit for it to be illegal. If he uploads, it is against the law.

It is illegal in almost all countries. And who says he lives in Chile? Because that is what his BBR profile says. Mine said Antarctica last week.

Actually I do live in Chile , and for your information I do block my uploads , that way I`m on the safe side . (besides my upload speed is a paltry 256 kbps.)

Actually, here's where their Pay-Per-View programming department's "gift" of Sandvine hardware to its sibling ISP division begins to pay off -- cheap (and legal) video download services are the latter's "worst nightmare".

There ARE Better Alternative

Build yourself a SFF PC w/ the board + enclosure you prefer using a fanless Via processor and either a 1.8", 2.5", or 3.5" HDD + Ubuntu + WINE/uTorrent or Azureus (yuk!) or ktorrent. You get a much better client that is more diffult for others to throttle and is adaptable/upgradeable. How long do you think Myka will last before folding, or whether it's "profitable" to constantly or ever update their buggy "firmware/software"?

At most it cost me $300 extra cuz most of us have memory/hdd already.

To be honest, electricity is expensive and I'll be using a soekris board the net5501, + 2.5" hdd (I have several) + an external usb hdd. you can oder the sorkris directly from the manufacturer in califrnia. you can even drop by their headquarters to buy some. however don't expect to run too much stuff on it. it is fanless and uses VERY little power. from their you can upgrade to a sff case which uses a bit more power and can accomodate 3.5" hdd and 2-4 GB memory. If going to a sff form factor, buy a board w/ integrated graphics. I only buy stuff like this from Fry's, so it is oftentimes equal or cheaper than newegg. They are close to where I live w/ excellent return policy and nice cheap selection. CompUSA stores closed in our area.
