Copyright protection comes too late
(old news - 01:47PM Saturday Nov 18 2006)
tags: legal · fun · networking
MySpace recently improved their system to protect against copyright infringement (using a filtering system which should automatically remove unauthorized music and videos), but according to a Reuters article, the move may have been made too late. Universal Music Group filed a lawsuit against MySpace last week for copyright infringement. The lawsuit accuses MySpace not only of allowing users to illegally upload copyrighted music and videos but of actually assisting users in doing so with their available re-formatting and peer-to-peer posting tools.

Universal is just blackmailing

The deal broke down with MySpace so they sued. I hope Murdoch sticks it to universal!

They implemented the fix only when they found out Universal was filing the lawsuit. The negotiations were dragging on until Universal pulled out their big stick.

Like YouTube, MySpace has some big bucks in the companies that own it.

MySpace will probably just make a deal with Universal to beter filter out copyright content.

I doubt MySpace will be "sued out of existance" or anything like that.

Which is too bad, imo. The only thing MySpace seems to accomplish is people saying "look at my body look at my body" or "I'm f/14 and I'll tell you where I live".

Ugh

Well gee...

Universal seems to just be on the rampage now aren't they. lol

This and their comments on the Zune launch that all these devices are just repositories for stolen music "and they all know it" so Universal et al should start getting paid.

Thus they refused to license anything for Zune until MS agreed to pay Universal royalties on the sales of the device. So we're back to "any device that can store music must pay the music industry just because."

Seriously. It was stupid for CDs and it is equally stupid for MP3 players. I suppose Universal hasn't heard of iTunes or heck even WalMart's music store where you buy music LEGALLY. Oh but that wouldn't be right to not let up on the endless mantra of all MP3 player owners are by default scum, pirates & theives. Doesn't fit the agenda.

My Space

Well it seems to me, it was a matter of time that some entertainment legal firm was going to further legal issues with MySpace, when working a solution between both parties wasn’t resolved. Any service website that gets as big as MySpace and YouTube will be noticed and some firms and corporate entities will make some move to intervene to suit their needs in the WWW.

As most may know already Google bought out YouTube and then made legal notices to users about copyrighted material. YouTube at least made solid general efforts to warn users about posting copy righted material. (Not sure what MySpace terms were or are since I do not find a need for it in Internet usage). This in fact may have allowed them to avoid legal issues with entertainment legal firms. And Google is always in the mix to provide entertainment and services to Internet users and to collaborate with entertainment groups and others to better the quarterly revenues of big wigs in the collaborated mix.

In the world of big business if you can’t beat them, join them or at the very least compromise.

Re: My Space

I just think it's disgusting that the RIAA must further degrade themselves. Plus with suing minors, they are no better than pedophiles.

But then again the RIAA degrading themselfves must play good in front of judges that have caught on to the extortion game that the RIAA plays
