Want support for Community Broadband Act
(old news - 09:28AM Friday Dec 16 2005)
tags: legislation · Politics · municipal
Earlier this week, the Community Broadband Coalition (CBC) sent a letter (see pdf copy) to one hundred members of the Senate, urging them to become cosponsors of S. 1294, the Community Broadband Act of 2005. Supported by Senators John McCain and Frank Lautenberg, the bill doesn't advocate municipal broadband, but it does protect a community's right to the option without political interference from incumbents. Leading the political push is Jim Baller, who we've interviewed about municipal broadband. Also see reports at Philly.com and Muni-Wireless.

If Lautenberg supports it, it is a bad bill

Without even reading further than the fact that Lautenberg is a sponsor of this bill( »thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z···s.01294: ), I can tell you this will go nowhere while the Senate is controlled by Republicans. Lautenberg is hated by most of the Republican Senators and just having his name attached to it as the one who introduced it almost guarantees its death.

The internet bill that will go forward is S.1504.

Re: If Lautenberg supports it, it is a bad bill

Do you think s.1294 is a "bad bill", or just that it won't pass?

s.1294:
A bill to amend the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to preserve and protect the ability of local governments to provide broadband capability and services.

s.1504:
A bill to establish a market driven telecommunications marketplace, to eliminate government managed competition of existing communication service, and to provide parity between functionally equivalent services.

It is definitely a bad bill, just as bad as the one which would ban local governments from offering Internet service because it attempts to extend federal authority where it does not belong.

There is nothing stopping states from imposing sovereign immunity on local communities which choose to offer Internet service.

But there is: it's called lobbyist contributions.

Maybe people should then stop electing people which accept those. The lobbyists only contribute because the elected officials accept it.

Well then who would be running the country? If we wait until lobbyists have no power... well, we'll be waiting quite a few generations.

Ouch, pnh102 takes side with the greedy corporations, dares to say it's bad when people get something for less or - OMG! - free, not paying money for the corporations? What a suprise...

Business as usual. Living here for many long years I got used to the stupid idiotic idea of 'free market tops everything', it's been proven absolutely bad in many areas but I'm quite surprised when now a muni-wireless amendment is called bad by armchair economy/legal experts - ROFLMAO. It's sooo obviously a lie...

I would never support a corporation that wasn't greedy! And are you really certain this is free service? After all, you were the one who was claiming Gmail wasn't free because it contained ads?

Money talks

If these guys in the CBC didn't include some fat checks with those letters to 100 senators, the chances are they will get drowned out by the louder "voices" of the telecom industry.

Money talks.
