1.5 million customers, $175 per home
(old news - 11:47AM Monday Dec 17 2007)

Qwest CEO Ed Mueller offered a little more detail on the company's "next generation" upgrade plans this morning in a conference call with analysts. According to Mueller, the company will spend $1.8 billion in 2008 on capital expenditures, $200 million more than previous predictions. The company will be spending $300 million over the next two years to bring 20Mbps VDSL to around 1.5 million customers.

Muellers says that $70-100 million will be spent on FTTN this year and another $200 million next year. The company hopes to see a FTTN/VDSL penetration rate of 40% by 2010, and the upgrades are going to cost the company around $175 per home. The CEO stated that they were focusing on portions of around twenty un-mentioned Qwest markets, but again failed to offer specifics.

Leaked documents we obtained last summer stated Denver, Phoenix and Colorado Springs will be the first launch markets for the (according to insiders) repeatedly delayed project. Markets soon to follow include Seattle, Minneapolis, Albuquerque, Portland, Salt Lake City and Des Moines. Those documents stated that like AT&T, Qwest would offer current-gen speeds at first over VDSL (1.5-7Mbps).

The business case is super conservative.
-Qwest CEO Ed Mueller
While the company has signed some TV franchise agreements, Muller continued to insist they wouldn't be focusing on IPTV -- and would instead be continuing their relationship with DirecTV. As it stands, the company sees getting into the TV business as too risky of a proposition.

Compare Qwest's $300 million plan to the plans of the other baby bells. AT&T plans to spend $6.5 billion for U-Verse VDSL deployment over the next few years, while Verizon has earmarked $23 billion for FiOS FTTH service over the next five.

"The business case is super conservative," Mueller told call attendees. The Qwest boss sees the deployment as a "solid foundation" from which they'll move forward. "We will finish it in 2008 and decide where we want to be with it."

Re: Bring it on!

We have the 1.5, 3, 5 and 7. It all depends on how far the CO is. I am connected to the CO now with 3meg service but have a RT down the street from me. Unfortunatly the RT only does 1.5. If the RT was fiber fed and could do 7meg, I would request my pair be moved in a heart beat.

Cheyenne's share of the pot

Of the $1.8 billion being spent by Qwest in 2008 Cheyenne, Wyoming will have a massive $3.97 plowed into Qwest's network in Cheyenne.

I hope they bring these upgrades to Wyoming. Although by the time they eventually do, the fiber build-out in Cody/Powell should be lit and active...

Re: Cheyenne's share of the pot

That is what is so cool about things Wyoming because Qwest blew off so much of the state. We have some very progressive outfits building out fiber, and wireless networks and they are free from interference from Qwest. Unfortunately Cheyenne is one of the cherries Qwest retained.

Where is Omaha?

You know I look at that first cities list and it makes me SICK!!

Qwest files for AND GETS forbearance in Omaha because of the Cox competition and then from what I see here gives up.

What a steaming pile of ****!

They have run McLeod out of the market because of their new copper rent and now put upgrading their own network on the back burner.

I was talking with someone from Iowa Telecomm the other day about ethernet over copper in Des Moines at $200/meg symmetrical and NOBODY can offer that but Cox because Qwest won't do it themselves and won't let anyone else do it either with their copper. Cox gets $2300 for 6MB

It's funny, in 1994 Qwest picked the fight with Cox to offer TV and now Cox kicks their a** to the point they will not even fight.

It's sad.

Re: Where is Omaha?

Qwest has pretty much lost the Omaha market and they aren't really in the mood to try and gain it back. The commercials are pretty accurate by cox saying 8 out of every 10 households in Omaha has Cox.

Granted, they could go balls out and wire up FTTN everywhere in Omaha and launch a huge advertising spree to get back all those customers they lost, but they are taking the lazy way out and just trying to keep the other markets.

Re: Where is Omaha?

It's a one way fight.

And when they do fight back it's all in the details...

Cox touts their 128/128 Cox Super Value Internet @ $19.99 then compares it to the 1.5/896 Qwest has for $26.99.
Cox's $26.99 plan is 1.5/256.

You can't fight the details and $19.99 is less than $26.99, but I would be mad if my EVDO phone had 128/128 speed let alone my cable modem.

It's all in the details.

I had been on DirecTV for 4 years and switched back to Cox in the past few weeks, I had no idea they did so many self inserts of their own ads. It seems like every 10 minutes there is a bash Qwest ad.

I miss the old USWest when it comes to being innovative.

We're doing metro ethernet over copper in Des Moines, there's nothing the local monopoly can do to prohibit uses of the copper as long as you aren't a hazard or interfering with other circuits.

I agree they can't prohibit however in the case of "The Omaha Order" they can make it darn hard.

You have done some really cool things there in Des Moines however why would anyone invest in Omaha with the climate the way it is now. It's a shame. Would you bring your RT's out to the neighborhoods here?

Rumor has it the next gen network will NOT be open to Qhost, I don't know if that's true, you would know better than me.

The loss of McLeod is REALLY going to hurt me in Omaha, and I will more than likely end up buying from you in Des Moines to make up for how mad I will be at McLeod when they bail. There will also be the massive hole left because of Lighthouse bailing with McLeod.

Omaha will soon be a duopoly, Pinpoint bought a bunch of McLeods assets in Omaha however they still have no last mile.

Re: Where is Omaha?

You can still get DS0 UNE loops, if you're good you can get a lot done with those.

I'm not sure that Q accomplished anything at all in Omaha, the only competitors that pulled out are the ones that were purchasing elements from them, the competitor that was soundly beating them has their own network entirely.

I didn't realize that McLeod was pulling out that completely. Who is Pinpoint?

The loss of Lighthouse is more addition by subtraction

Existing VDSL

I've had Qwest's VDSL TV and data since 2001. Although it's been rock-solid, it is showing its age. They recently added an HDTV option, but I've resisted since I have a TiVo and Qwest doesn't offer a CableCard option. They have a waiver for their current platform (on the grounds that it will be sunsetted); I would hope their new platform offers it.

Re: Existing VDSL

The HDTV in Phoenix has its own gateway and separate copper pair. So they are at least not trying to squash it in with the regular three channels and internet.
It is not FTTH but at least each HDTV channel gets its own copper pair the last mile.

I have had Qwest VDSL, not TV, online only in Scottsdale now for two years. I have never had any downtime. The product is great, but this is a much needed speed increase to compete with Cox in the area. I have called the VDSL techs and they have heard of this upgrade but do not have any dates yet.

Why bother

Why should Qwest bother with an aggressive upgrade plan when their real hope is a sellout of their business to Vz or ATT? Qwest offers their customers the least for the most$, compared to the other LECs. They are consistently behind the curve. Living in a region served by Qwest, I can only say the day they either fold or get bought cannot come too soon. They are the Amish of the telcom/tech world. And who thinks they should offer IPTV when they can't get POTS right, anyhow?

@QWEST.NET

Re: Why bother

Qwest or USWest or Mountain Bell which one. The fall behind the curve started with Qwest being allowed to plunder USWest. USWest had DSL service almost of before most major companies. USWest had Airtouch or a part of it. They had a cable company ? sold to I believe ATT. USWEST was plundered legally.
There are still some people working at the new Qwest that care and are ahead of the curve. Just not as much cash or credit available as other companies.
Bring in another CEO looking for his next retirement quick. They need young new forward thinking CEO. Not a old guy that has been around. Has experience but just looking out for his masters.
Rant over.

Covad

@comcast.net

Why not just buy Covad?

Covad:

nationwide ADSL2+ network
$500 mil revenue
SMB VOIP product
high margin T1 business
pre-wimax business
LPV residential VOIP

Just got bid by PE for about 1x sales. Why build it for $350 mil in two years rather than buy it for $600 mil now?

Re: Why not just buy Covad?

Because Qwest would crush them with baby bell thinking.

Qwest needs to be bought, but nobody wants it.

Now if we could pass a national FTTH bill, then yes Qwest is desirable for all that wonderful tax money!

Nobody wants the rural telco without some backend $$$.
