Missouri University Makes Kids Take Copyright Quiz To Use P2PCorrect answers net you six hours of P2P use... 01:52PM Thursday May 15 2008 by Karltags: legal · FileswappingIn order to deal with the flood of DMCA letters from the entertainment industry, many college campuses have blocked access to P2P services altogether. But according to Inside Higher Education, Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla has a different idea. They force students interested in using P2P to take a copyright quiz to get six hours of P2P use. School sanctions for violating copyright include network bans, community service and academic probation. As far as DMCA letters are concerned, it seems to be working: Last academic year, Missouri University of Science and Technology, in Rolla, received some 200 Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notices from the recording industry, notifying the institution that users of its network had made copyrighted works available for download. This academic year at a time when colleges across the country have been experiencing sudden spikes in copyright complaints the university received eight. I'm guessing one or two students game the quiz, download what they want using encryption, then everyone else there simply transfers films and music among themselves off network. So while the University dodges liability and conserves bandwidth, it's probably not doing much for overall piracy levels. At least students don't have to take classes taught by the Copyright Crusading Ferret or Captain Copyright, so that's something. Related:- More On Media Defender's Latest Screw Up

| Sigh Well making available and sharing are two different beasts. However, as I said before, the RIAA can send someone to download the file and then claim it's now been shared. I wouldn't put that past them either which way. Anyhow, maybe these people should try other methods outside of p2p. Bittorent? Newsgroups?.... just some suggestions. | |

| LOL Kool me. I never lived on campus but I found time to do stupid things in my spare time with friends. I ended my grad with approx 3.2 as well. It was all that wonderful thing called a balance, as you put it. The thing that sucked for me was I lived 30 miles away from my school and did the commute daily. Therefore, I really couldn't party on campus. It'd been quite hard to get back =P for such a long drive being screwed. Therefore, I made it up with friends where I lived LOL. Either way, unlike PNH who absolutely must be the "SPOCK" of all humanity (without the logic, just the seriousness), I found time to have fun. Hey, I even passed too and never failed a class. In all the time I was in college, I only dropped one class (didn't need it) and got a pity pass on another. Yet, I never failed. So yes PNH, people can have lives. Hey get this, I even got a 4.0 on my Masters. So I guess you just suck at balancing things would be the moral of this story PNH. Maybe you should invest in time management classes =P. | |

| Re: BYOI Sigh. First, I referred to the fact you STARTED a sentence with the word AND. And = Conjunction. Therefore, you created a sentence fragment. You're question is as follow: And you are a teacher? Notice, the word and is a conjunction and links two sentences together. What are you linking here? Please elaborate. It has nothing to do with ending that given sentence with a period. So FAILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL would be your word of week. Next time, don't criticize others if you can't even do so properly. As for the word very, I am aware of it. However, that word would also fit my sentence. Vary in terms of new aspects is fine. Either way, I have nothing to prove since you fail at judging others. Once again, PNH comes out missing. | |

Seriously PNH, don't thank anyone for your own stupidity. You're about as lame as it gets here bud. I'm done with this conversation. It's proven time and time again, your basis and delusional tendencies far outweigh arguing with. No wonder you joined the military, you were far too inept to handle the real world so you had to let others dictate your life. This shouldn't be construed in the sense that people who join the military are dumb. However, some like yourself have no other choice, when mother nature gave you nothing else to work from. Obviously, it should be noted all conversations with you go off track and focus on the mundane. At which point, you fail miserably at trying to hash that out, when you make the same mistakes. | |

NJIT is probably more along the lines of 95% study and 5% leisure (usually World of Warcraft). I can't recall any good parties taking place here... There is a 15:1 male to female ratio and if there are any females, they are probably Muslims with the cloth over their heads. Good thing is that this school is literally right across the street from Rutgers - Newark, which is completely opposite when it comes to study / party and girls per guy.

This is an engineering school with a ton of nerds - of course they're going to be downloading. I'd assume they just wised up to downloading internally from servers and sharers we had instead of going externally to be caught - faster and no RIAA police. | Test answers versus real life actions Wouldn't the students merely give the test answers that they thought the University Administration would want? For example, if the question was "Should you download a movie from a P2P network that was recorded by a movie goer's camcorder: (A) Yes (B) No." The student would answer (B) and then use their P2P time to download a camcorder recorded movie.
This kind of reminds me of that essay I wrote for a Skeptics society when I was a kid. I did a survey to see how people's beliefs in supernatural phenomenon changed as they aged. I made sure that my conclusions were in line with what a skeptics society would believe (that people believed less in the supernatural as they matured). I wound up winning honorable mention in the contest and won $25.
