Microsoft Defends White Space Devices
Says most recent prototype works properly...
by Karl Bode Monday 13-Aug-2007 tags: wireless · alternatives
A six-partner coalition (including Microsoft, Google and Dell) wants to use the so-called "white space" spectrum -- partially freed by the migration to digital television -- to offer consumers cheap broadband via the airwaves. However, their initial trial devices submitted to the FCC for testing didn't fare very well.

The Commission stated that the devices, which were supposed to automatically detect nearby wireless signals and adjust accordingly, failed to do so. Microsoft is now disputing the findings, and says that a second prototype given to the FCC last week worked effectively.

The FCC is holding a meeting Thursday to discuss testing options for white space devices.

the reason they don't work properly....

The devices don't pad the pockets of the FCC commissioners with cash.

Hehe.. I think testing version 2 came with a bunch of $100 bills used for padding in the cardboard box. For some reason that helps with reliability and range.

What a bunch of cynics we have around here.

yes, they are discussing the testing options, like whether the tests will include real $100s or just fake ones.

But it wasn't the commissioners who issued that finding, it was the OET.

Since you feel justified in smearing the integrity of the people working in the Office of Engineering Technology, do you have any evidence backing up your statements? Anything specific you can point to in their report that looks questionable?

Microsoft needs to give the FCC time to test NEW device

Microsoft admits the device they gave the FCC didn't work. They just gave the FCC a new device to test in the last week, and are now whining because they didn't get an automatic OK. How about they give the FCC some time to actually test the new device themselves.

Honest

(SARCASM)
Honest Injun they work. We need to recoupe all of the money we spent developing them so they have got to be approved no matter what. Besides, even if they don't work, we'll fix the problem later (honest) and besides, why would you want to watch over the air TV when you can get cable?

Frankly it sounds like a great idea but the problem is in the details.

RE: Microsoft Defends White Space Devices

Why is anybody surprised that the laws of physics can't be broken? There is no way to make such a device that won't interfere with someone's reception. Just because the device thinks your television can't receive a certain channel doesn't mean your set can't.

Re: RE: Microsoft Defends White Space Devices

Hmmm... this physics major has no idea what "laws" you're talking about.

It's alot easier to detect the presense of a signal (especially the ATSC pilot tone) than it is to receive one well enough to demodulate it and obtain the video content.
