SpaceX spacecraft docks with Space Station

For the first time, a cargo-carrying spacecraft made by a private company arrived at the International Space Station.

SpaceX's unmanned Dragon spacecraft was captured by the space station's 58-foot robotic arm by astronaut Don Pettit aboard the space station. The linkup took place about 250 miles above northwest Australia at 6:56 a.m. PDT.

The cone-shaped capsule was grappled to the station’s arm after three days of circling the Earth. NASA is now determining when the spacecraft should dock with the station and when crew should unload the half-ton of cargo, water and clothes.

SpaceX, officially known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp., is the first private company to embark on such a mission. Up until now, sending a spacecraft to the space station has been a feat that has only been accomplished by four of the world's wealthiest and most technologically advanced governments: the United States, Russia, Japan and the European Union.

Looks like a new step in space travel, with a privately funded venture successfully launching a mission to space.

Re: SpaceX spacecraft docks with Space Station

Pretty cool. Watched the HD feed from NASA TV on my iPad via Fios WiFi at home today (took a vacation day to make it a 4 day weekend).

Being a fan of the space program in general (boy, the definition of that changed today, and to establish my space fan "cred" my cats are named Buzz & Gordo) not only was it cool to see a private company successfully make it's first trip to the ISS, it was a point of national pride to to be able to get stuff to the ISS without bowing to those lousy Russians.

Been following the development of the Dragon Spacecraft and Falcon rockets for some time now. Most of those involved are placing a 4+ year time line on maned flight on the Falcon/Dragon. I seriously believe this will be at least HALF that. The Dragon as it docked today is a Human rated prototype on a test flight.

It's going to be interesting to see how the re entry goes. I have full confidence the Dragon spacecraft will return to Earth intact and as planned.

I was sorry to see the Shuttle program sunset. It was a triumph of technology, engineering, and national pride. But, if we can find a way to move cargo & Humans into LEO a lot cheaper, I'm all for it. I grew up loving the Shuttle program, but I never understood why we moved away from an evolutionary path aligned with the Saturn 5 and Apollo program.

The cargo capabilities of the Shuttle made the ISS possible, but who can say where the Saturn/Apollo would have gone had we decided to develop it further.

Kinda line the Apple IIGS (That's personal for me )

Re: SpaceX spacecraft docks with Space Station

ISS astronauts open up and start unloading the Dragon spacecraft of its cargo. The capsule will then be loaded up with equipment to be returned to earth from the ISS. Dragon will then return to earth for a splashdown off California coast on Thursday.

Re: SpaceX spacecraft docks with Space Station

They successfully made entry to the spacecraft today. So far it's a "textbook" mission.

This is a new beginning for space flight. As the private sector takes over the day to day routine of moving people & cargo to LEO, NASA is free to concentrate on more lofty goals like returning to the moon, going to Mars, and visiting other space bodies like asteroids.

While indeed a milestone, it's not unprecedented in human history. Once upon a time crossing the Atlantic, or North America was a task accomplished only by a government entity.

Often, as a species we find ourselves in a position where our reach exceeds our grasp, but I think when it comes to LEO transit our grasp is to become on par with our reach.

Indeed, exciting times....

Re: SpaceX spacecraft docks with Space Station

I grew up with the manned space missions. In fact I remember Sputnik. The Space Shuttle was a technological master piece but from the beginning it was not what NASA wanted. They well knew the dangers of solid fuel boosters, What NASA had planned to build was more like the Russian Buran and the Energia heavy-lift rocket. The original design had the forward crew compartment configured as an escape capsule reminiscent" of the escape system on the F111 Aardvark". NASA never received the funding they needed to build what they wanted. This and other factors is what led to the loss of two crews.

Space X is really a milestone. I can't wait to see the launch of the Falcon Heavy, which, according the the Space X website will be the most powerful rocket in service.

Funny: Verizon advertising at OC,NJ beach with mascot

A new way to advertise for Verizon: a walking Verizon smartphone at the beach in Ocean City, NJ during the beach community's summer kickoff "Walk in to the Water Businessperson's Plunge". Is this their new marketing direction?

Hello backfeed, nice to see you!

Happy Memorial Day to you and all on the forum.

I too am considering an SSD- in my Acer TimelineX netbook(s). I have 2...

I have a friend in TX who did this on the exact same computer and he is thrilled with the results. Says he boots up in 10 seconds or something like that. He's running Win 7 though. I am currently running Xubuntu on this machine, and I'm going to stay with it.

Most of the SSD's will require firmware upgrades, at least that's what I keep reading. I *hate* firmware upgrades... :-(

Anyway, hope you and the Mrs. have a nice weekend.

Hey there backfeed!

No, I haven't moved on, I always keep an eye out here to see what everyone is up to, although I must admit to having some serious withdrawal issues while the site was down .

It's nice to be back though.

Hope you and the Mrs. have a lovely weekend with friends and family, and good weather and good food.

Re: Upgrading my laptop

I had to reinstall windows using my win7 pro disc, install drivers for the laptop and programs all over again. Also do tons of updates.

I bought this one at bestbuy using my rewardzone points.

I would wait for one to go on sale. The one in a computer I just built, I got it for $100 on sale. It was a 120gb ssd. It was a OCZ, intel always seems to be expensive but mine has a 5 year warranty vs OCZ 2-3 year warranty.

Yes, I also love those rewardzone points at BestBuy... I recently used a bunch of them to treat myself to a Logitech wireless trackball.

Nice drive. $100 bucks for that drive is an awesome price. 120 GB is plenty of room for a laptop, for most people.

And I always wait for stuff to go on sale. Every little bit helps nowadays...

The OCZ drives the last I checked had a somewhat significant failure rate over the Intel SSDs; they would get up and die basically, without warning. The Intels aren't as fast but they are reliable from my own experience .

Re: Vacation, vacation, vacation...

It could be a person who worked a lot of overtime, holidays, or took over when others were out. Instead of getting money, you get added hours of time off. He could have been part of a contract where you work almost nonstop for 11 months. Then there is the ability to reward some of the workers with extra time off. Private industry does have the ability to create nice extra benefits when economically possible. 90% of them probably do not, but there are some differently thinking ones.

Just my own personal experience, 20+ years @ govt. agency--8 weeks of leave each year. Taking a month at a time was not typical, but not unheard of--as long as you had coverage it was OK.

Re: Vacation, vacation, vacation...

You are correct. I work for the state government. In my case, I accumulate vacation time in hours with a maximum limit. I had over 250 hours of vacation so I took the opportunity to go to Puerto Rico to visit family I haven't seen in over 20 years and to get my birth certificate. My immediate family in Florida is to see one of my nieces graduate from high school. I missed my other niece graduate from the community college. And no, I didn't get comp time instead of OT. With the way the state is going, OT is a pretty premium only offered in extreme cases of necessity.

EDIT: (forgot to add) And yes, I do have a back up.

My county has a similar policy. It worked out OK while we were one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.

But:
Beginning 2008, our county has had a string of hiring freezes/layoffs,
parks now charge admission (though we already pay property and sales taxes),
libraries have cut hours and days
and the list of reduced services goes on and on.

The overgenerous perks aren't the sole reason for our financial straits.
It's just one more thing we were spending money on, instead of hedging against hard times.

Re: Vacation, vacation, vacation, vacation, vacation, Broke.

The leave policies were generally better because the salaries were lower than you could get for similar jobs in the private sector. Over the years, though, they've tried to improve the salaries, but at the same time they've reduced the leave. Those hired before a certain date had a somewhat better policy applied, but still not quite as good as "the old days" (if you ask me), which is fair I guess since the total compensation (formula for leave + salary) stayed about the same. For some agencies it's all PTO now--no annual/sick/comp (though some positions can still get comp for special situations); overtime is even more rare. Occasionally, there's even this thing called a "bonus" (always related specifically to some project); usually it's just a bigger plate of chocolate chip cookies. (Fiscal problems due to bad upper-level management is a separate issue.)

My county doesn't have meaningful competition from our local private sector.
Like most counties, ours has a much smaller private sector than would be needed to provide jobs for it's population.

Even PS + Gov together isn't enough. An menial job here at $8/hr will commonly draw over 100 applicants.

I am in hospitality... since we are 24/7/365 we dont get the typical holidays off so we have a PTO system... after 5 years I get 28 days... which if I really wanted would mean I can be out of the office for almost 6 weeks... but then I would be ready to scream 2 weeks after I get back... so i split and take 2 vacations of 2 weeks each and save the rests for "I cant stand this place this week" moments works out really good

Reminds me, I need to update the kernel on my Gentoo router. Darn mobo and NICs are grouchy and Linux is the only one that plays nice. I'd rather run OpenBSD, but the cas drivers are a little busted (no MAC addresses). So, it's Linux until it gets fixed.

The rest (14 of 'em) run FreeBSD 8.3. Gotta love ZFS.

Memorial Day Weekend - must do's

Just moved into a new home recently, still getting the network connected to the ethernet jacks (got the wireless working the first night- )

Eyes are getting older and have trouble seeing the color stripes to lay them down on the connector. So I'll take my time (hopefully get it correct the 1st time)

Of course, we'll celebrate the awesome service and lives many gave to keep America (and the world) a better place, and paved the future for all of us.

My niehgbor has this new gas grill, Its cool, but I really like the old charcoal grill styled from 1970 era (same style, but bought at the wally world a few years ago). Light that bad boy off, watch the flames for 15-20 minutes and burn the burgers, sausages, chicken, corn.....ummm...gotta go...

Yard work safety

In this part of the country (New England), we have a very sandy and rocky soil composition. I was mowing the lawn yesterday and the mower shot a rock at me that grazed the top of my head. I immediately stopped mowing and I went to Lowe's and bought a face shield. It also said to use safety glasses in addition to the face shield.

I am wearing both a face shield and safety glasses when mowing from now on.

I opted to trade in the ½ acre of grass. It wasn't serving a constructive purpose.

I have 5 boys, but:
The kids are only out of school during months that it's hot enough out to melt titanium.
So playing in the yard became what I did to punish them.

Now I'm in a house w/ a block yard in back, and front lawn small enough to cut w/ a pair of scissors.
We all spend more time outdoors because we're close enough to walk to stuff.

Lloyd's of London preparing for Euro Collapse

Mr. WorldFinancialMarket has been kind of grumpy lately.

said by Telegraph :

The chief executive of the multi-billion pound Lloyd's of London has publicly admitted that the world's leading insurance market is prepared for a collapse in the single currency and has reduced its exposure "as much as possible" to the crisis-ridden continent.

Richard Ward said the London market had put in place a contingency plan to switch euro underwriting to multi-currency settlement if Greece abandoned the euro.

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph he also revealed that Lloyd's could have to take writedowns on its £58.9bn investment portfolio if the EuroZone collapses.

Europe accounts for 18pc of Lloyd's £23.5bn of gross written premiums, mostly in France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

Just wait until the entire student loan industry implodes here, Guessing that will make AIG look like chicken lips.

The US student loan industry is so unfathomably corrupt, a complete meltdown may be the only fix for it.

Memorial Day Weekend

God bless all of our service folk and veterans and their families!
Time to remember the sacrifices and why we are safe here at home.

What is with the Cable conference in Boston this week? It's on CSPAN. Any surprises for the rest of us?

London Summer Olympics will stream all events on NBC

NBCOlympics.com will live stream every single event (they'll even be on YouTube, and in the UK the BBC has its own plans) for the first time ever including streams of each of its channels, encompassing 3,500 total hours and the awarding of all 302 medals. The bad news is that if you're not a cable subscriber, many of those hours will not be available to you, and even if you are, you're looking at a (likely convoluted) authentication sign-in process.

Also new for the internet are multiple streams for the same event, so for example, viewers can select a particular gymnastics apparatus or track and field event at will.

On mobile devices, NBC also has plans for two different apps on phones and tablets, with one that brings live video streams and another with highlight clips. It didn't specify what platforms they would be available for, but we'd assume the usual suspects (iOS, Android) will be first up.

For the full breakdown of all 5,535 hours of coverage across NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, Telemundo and everything else check out the press release after the break

Thank You

To all those who fought and died so that I could live in a world with such promise.

I know it's not veteran's day but I have to say Thank You to all those who have served or are currently serving.

Now let's kick back and relax with a nice adult beverage and remember what we have been given by the men and women of our armed forces.

This includes all nations who have stood together in the never ending fight for freedom.

I don't like to think what Hitler would have done to a smart ass like me.

What our Finest Generation endured - an uncomforable read.

I'm a proponent of war when it needs to be done.
I object to insulating us at home from it's price.

Below is the preface from an article published in The Atlantic Monthly August 1989
quote:
On its fiftieth anniversary, how should we think of the Second World War? What is its contemporary meaning?

One possible meaning, reflected in every line of what follows, is obscured by that oddly minimizing term "conventional war."
With our fears focused on nuclear destruction, we tend to be less mindful of just what conventional war between modern industrial powers is like.
This article describes such war, in a stark, unromantic manner

Re: Blue Angels and Six Flags

The Blue Angels always put on a good show. Flying so close together is dangerous. Even a sneeze could cause a high speed collision.
