CEO: 'I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon...'

Cable operator Mediacom (see our user reviews) has released their earnings report, which notes the company posted a net loss of $6.6 million in the quarter. The company also said that it has lowered its year-end revenue guidance from 8-9% growth to 7-8%, news which drove the company's stock downward on Wall Street.

Broadband revenues grew by 19.6%, and the company added 13,000 new broadband customers. They also saw a 126% growth in VoIP revenue and 21,000 new VoIP customers. The company lost 18,000 basic cable subscribers and gained 2,000 digital cable subscribers.

In news that will neither thrill nor surprise Mediacom customers, Mediacom CEO Rocco Commisso announced during an earnings conference call that the company would be taking a "back seat" on DOCSIS 3.0 deployment. Keep in mind, Qwest is the company's biggest competitive threat.
I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon.

"I don't think anyone has deployed that technology in the U.S. today," says Commisso. "I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon." The company says they're eyeing DOCSIS 3.0 in 2008 and 2009, but offered no solid timeline for deployment.

Whos Mediacom?

I've never heard of anyone that has them. Also why would they upgrade knowing all cable/teleco company's they will just ride what they have until the government forces them to do something or someone better comes along and they lose a lot of customers.

Re: Whos Mediacom?

I can access a Mediacom modem diagnostics page from my Comcast internet connection by typing in the »10.xxx.xxx.xxx in my web browser.

I forget the ip off the top of my head (not at home right now), but yeah its really WEIRD. Somehow the Mediacom private IP address range is connected with Comcast. I wonder what kind of relationship the two have?

I don't know of any official link, but they both own former chunks of TCI/AT&T Broadband/etc. Mediacom bought some areas (like in Iowa) before Comcast bought up the rest in 2001-2002. Perhaps there is some legacy infrastructure sharing left?

Re: Whos Mediacom?

I've researched the modem's config file name. Also looking up the tracert shows a mediacom owned ip address on the hop right before the 10.x.x.x address. I posted before on here about it, let me see if I can dig it up.

Re: Whos Mediacom?

Found an SBV5220 on mediacom.

»10.17.136.29/

Remember the login for a SBV5220 is admin and the password is motorola

Compared it to mine and I have a firmware version 2 years newer and 16 revisions later. Theres slight differences. One of the things I've noticed on the Mediacom voice modem is the detail of the DHCP process in the logs. It says what boot file it downloads, the TFTP server address, etc.. Comcast must prevent the modems from posting that info somehow.

Actually it's the newer firmware from Motorola that leaves out the info, not Comcast. Of course that was done by Motorola due to requests of all the cable companies.

Mediacom's $6.6 mil loss

If Mediacom would actually invest some money in repairing their plant, offering a service that didn't look like it was still 1980, then people would more than likely start coming back.

I have two places in Mediacom territory (both Iowa) and they quality of the basic cable service is pure crap. The last time I saw that PQ was back in 1980. (This is straight from the tap)

This company is a train wreck of systems waiting to derail and when you talk to their corporate HQ, they have the gall to actually tell you 'it costs money'...

MC is a company that needs to be bought out and get out of the business. This is a company which is an example of stretching copper too far. They even, and yes - mark this down, even make at&t look good. Even though at&t is pushing out and stretching outdated technology "for the future" at least they are actually investing into themselves.

I believe that even if Mediacom got a cash infusion they would not know how to handle it or what to do with it.

At minimum, the PQ, their mainstay, needs to be better. They could sweep their system (which I bet is done on an as needed basis) and tighten fittings, look for tree-rat chew, replace corrosion, etc. That kind of maintenance isn't that expensive, yet necessary.

If they can't run analog, then they really can't run anything digital with any measure of quality.

The fact they are taking a back seat to DS3.0 is no surprise. Since most of their competition is not doing much to up the ante, why should they? When ever I said that satellite still has a purpose, this is it.

I would love to, if I had time, look at the FCC fly-over data from Mediacom territory.

Re: Mediacom's $6.6 mil loss

I couldn't agree more. Mediacom doesn't seem to take their business very seriously and do nothing but create no choice for customers in the areas they serve due to their poor quality. For me it's AT&T or nothing because of Mediacom.

My opinion is Mediacom does not have enough money to do any major upgrades. It's true that there is no need to do any major upgrades (it's not like FIOS is coming to Iowa ) but I don't think Mediacom would be able to do it even if they had some major competition.

PQ is OK. Compared to Dish and DirecTV PQ digital looks about the same. At least *I* can't see any difference.

Another that needs to go the way of Chapter 11

I used to live in Mediacom territory and it sucked. Too bad in Southern Illinois the competitor was Verizon rural lines that they wanted rid of in the worst way (rural lines.)

Why Am I Not Surprised?

Ahhh the advantages to having no real competition. The thing is as the article states Qwest is the only competition really and the kicker is Mediacom's big thing is they service the rural areas (especially in Iowa) that can't get DSL due to them being out so far in the cornfields. So as someone else stated it doesn't surprise me that Rocco made this announcement. Why spend money to upgrade to a newer BETTER FASTER technology when there's no need to due to lack of competition.
