| Re: That's Why I use Treewalk I used Treewalk when I had XP systems. When I switched to Vista on new computers Treewalk didn't support Vista, though some people said they created workarounds to get it working.
Does Treewalk now support Vista without making a kludge setup? EDIT: I just checked treewalk forums and they still don't have a vista version.
But since I went to Vista I have used Opendns servers without any problems at all.

| hmmm....... most tech savvy people would use a different DNS. I use Open DNS. But for the home users that have no clue, well i feel bad for them.
This did put me in a state of confusion with my DirecTV OnDemand i had to change the DNS to Open DNS too cause it obtained the DNS from my modem's default gateway.

If you're talking about 4.2.2.2,3,4 and so on, those are Verizon's DNS servers. But you're right their DNS servers never go down.
Now DHCP servers are another thing...

| Re: Yay for level 3 DNS =] Oh, I think I see what happened here. The IP space 4.0.0.0/8 was once upon a time owned by BBNPlanet. GTE (which later became Verizon) bought BBNPlanet, renamed it Genuity and sold it to Level 3. Apparently there's a stale database somewhere and the rdns for those IP's is still assigned to GTE/Verizon.
If I were a Verizon DNS admin, I could think of some fun games to play here.

| DNS woes From my logs we lost DNS approx 5:37pm EST.
Called help desk when I got home about 8, and had several fast busy signals until it finally connected. Their voicemail went "We are working on a severe outage affecting regional customers bla bla... if you want to wait for support, good luck, but guess what, they won't tell you any more." No, really, that's the gist of the message. lol. At least I didn't wait to find out nothing new.
We had sporadic DNS success past 2 hours, but as of 10:15pm it appears to be coming back up.
Welcome to AT&T/Bellsouth I guess

| ATT is down,,, Remember the rolling power grid? I have an att/bs connection,,, the gateway is always there,,, the name server is intermittent,,, but the first router is also intermittent. using a continuous ping batch I see welcome2att as a possible source. the ns probs of a few months ago were nothing like this,,, metrics at 90 could get around fine in that, (bouncing routers, "you take it-no you take it"). I ran a traceroute a bit ago and it took 2.5 mins for it to tell me the combined latency was 642ms,,, I'm thinkin' dsl is down,,, not the name servers. | |

i wonder who will be getting fired at AT&T from this multiple hour screwup that will cause them to give out a lot of credit on bills????

| Open DNS???
It seems that some of you have a workaround to the Bellsouth / ATT outage tonight, Open DNS. Can someone point to a place to learn more about this?
The problem tonight seems to be one connecting to the WWW, not an outright connection outage. My connection to my online tradng account has been uninterrupted (connects directly to the brokers servers, not through the web).

| not just openDNS > users are finding resolution only by switching to OpenDNS DNS servers.
Not just OpenDNS, any functioning non-Bellsouth DNS server you may know about will do the job. I posted a good long list of public DNS servers in the forum thread, and later a method by which many users can set up their systems to automatically query up to four DNS servers before giving up.

@bellsouth.net | my fault, sorry
It's all my fault. I inserted a WiFi dongle I bought on EBay from Hong Kong, but then killed off the hardware wizard and pulled out the dongle when I realized I ought to reboot first. The outage coincided with this.

I use the OpenDNS ones because Comcast dns sucks ass.
I also like the 4.2.2.1 and they are easy to remember
