Impacting many users in BellSouth territory....

Users in our BellSouth forum are reporting a major BellSouth DNS outage impacting a significant chunk of BellSouth territory customers. Users say that BellSouth support systems have been overwhelmed, and users are finding resolution only by switching to OpenDNS DNS servers. "I called the AT&T DSL support number, 1-888-321-2375 from 2 different phones," complains one user. "It never rings, it just disconnects."

Re: That's Why I use Treewalk

I used Treewalk when I had XP systems. When I switched to Vista on new computers Treewalk didn't support Vista, though some people said they created workarounds to get it working.

Does Treewalk now support Vista without making a kludge setup?
EDIT: I just checked treewalk forums and they still don't have a vista version.

But since I went to Vista I have used Opendns servers without any problems at all.

Re: That's Why I use Treewalk

Vista is a piece of bloated software.
I've got Vista and Fedora Core 6 - 64bit on the same machine...
My old Windows 2000 on an AMD 1.2GHz with 512MB ram ran circles around Vista.. there's just so much junk. Caching directories, automatic defrags, virus scans... it ends up bogging down the machine quite a bit, and I have to restart / kill apps.
Fedora Core 6 / 64bit is very fast.
W2K was decent as well, but my old hardware failed.

hmmm.......

most tech savvy people would use a different DNS. I use Open DNS. But for the home users that have no clue, well i feel bad for them.

This did put me in a state of confusion with my DirecTV OnDemand i had to change the DNS to Open DNS too cause it obtained the DNS from my modem's default gateway.

Yay for level 3 DNS =]

Glad I switched to level3 DNS servers (4.2.2.*) .

Never been down for me ever. Not sure how it is compared to OpenDNS though.

If you're talking about 4.2.2.2,3,4 and so on, those are Verizon's DNS servers. But you're right their DNS servers never go down.

Now DHCP servers are another thing...

Re: Yay for level 3 DNS =]

Oh, I think I see what happened here. The IP space 4.0.0.0/8 was once upon a time owned by BBNPlanet. GTE (which later became Verizon) bought BBNPlanet, renamed it Genuity and sold it to Level 3. Apparently there's a stale database somewhere and the rdns for those IP's is still assigned to GTE/Verizon.

If I were a Verizon DNS admin, I could think of some fun games to play here.

ugh

I was wondering what was up. I should've already had the OpenDNS numbers handy, but I didn't. Thankfully, the DNS servers managed to spit up a chunk of OpenDNS's page. Now I'm back in action.

DNS woes

From my logs we lost DNS approx 5:37pm EST.

Called help desk when I got home about 8, and had several fast busy signals until it finally connected. Their voicemail went "We are working on a severe outage affecting regional customers bla bla... if you want to wait for support, good luck, but guess what, they won't tell you any more." No, really, that's the gist of the message. lol. At least I didn't wait to find out nothing new.

We had sporadic DNS success past 2 hours, but as of 10:15pm it appears to be coming back up.

Welcome to AT&T/Bellsouth I guess

Not suprised.

DNS issues are almost a regular thing with Bellsouth, now merged with AT&T.

Re: Not suprised.

Seems to happen a lot more common in my opinion, but that's just me. I really wouldn't know since most of the time I use OpenDNS or TreeWalk.

Bellsouth DSL

My Bellsouth DSL has been been up/down for hours. Thanks for the tip about Open DNS - I didn't know about any of that stuff. I setup with opendns, configured my router and boom I'm back in business!

ATT is down,,, Remember the rolling power grid?

I have an att/bs connection,,, the gateway is always there,,, the name server is intermittent,,, but the first router is also intermittent. using a continuous ping batch I see welcome2att as a possible source. the ns probs of a few months ago were nothing like this,,, metrics at 90 could get around fine in that, (bouncing routers, "you take it-no you take it"). I ran a traceroute a bit ago and it took 2.5 mins for it to tell me the combined latency was 642ms,,, I'm thinkin' dsl is down,,, not the name servers.

better than brighthouse

well this is my 3rd dsl outage in 5 years so i can't complain when compared to brighthouse which has 3 per month for our neighbors that use that service...

i wonder who will be getting fired at AT&T from this multiple hour screwup that will cause them to give out a lot of credit on bills????

man

@bellsouth.net

Re: better than brighthouse

Credit on bills? I've been with BS for 5 1/2 years and they have never credited me for an outage no matter how nicely or angrily I ask. If you've had different luck I'd love to hear more about it.

OpenDNS working in North Atlanta

Been having slow access problems for about a month. Called the help desk and the usual disconnect, turn off, turn on, all without any remedy. Changed to OpenDNS when service went down today and it came right up with the normal speed.

@bellsouth.net

Open DNS???

It seems that some of you have a workaround to the Bellsouth / ATT outage tonight, Open DNS. Can someone point to a place to learn more about this?

The problem tonight seems to be one connecting to the WWW, not an outright connection outage. My connection to my online tradng account has been uninterrupted (connects directly to the brokers servers, not through the web).

not just openDNS

> users are finding resolution only by switching to OpenDNS DNS servers.

Not just OpenDNS, any functioning non-Bellsouth DNS server you may know about will do the job. I posted a good long list of public DNS servers in the forum thread, and later a method by which many users can set up their systems to automatically query up to four DNS servers before giving up.

belsowthsukz

@bellsouth.net

my fault, sorry

It's all my fault. I inserted a WiFi dongle I bought on EBay from Hong Kong, but then killed off the hardware wizard and pulled out the dongle when I realized I ought to reboot first. The outage coincided with this.

DNS

ISP's DNS servers are garbage, I'm surpised more users on this site don't know of OpenDNS or the 4.2.2.1 servers.

I use the OpenDNS ones because Comcast dns sucks ass.

I also like the 4.2.2.1 and they are easy to remember

4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2

Can't wait till OpenDNS gets that Chicago data center online..

Re: DNS

it really isn't all that useful to run with 4.2.2.x, those are supposed to be accessed by other servers, not end users. it's much nicer for everyone if you all use either the local server or an opendns....
