MVNO Startup DDOS'd to Death on Launch Day
Sprint MVNO Voyager Lands With a Thud

Sprint MVNO Voyager Mobile is one of several companies launching this year that hopes to be somewhat disruptive with pricing. The company, a project of a kid that's still in college, promised users unlimited texts and voice calling for $19 a month. For $39 a month, the company promised unlimited texts, voice and data. Interestingly, the phone lineup looks to be a little more robust that what many are used to with these kinds of offerings, with users given the choices of the Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G Touch, Motorola XPRT, and a variety of USB modems and hotspots.

Unfortunately, launch day didn't go particularly well for Voyager, with somebody launching a DDOS attack against the company resulting in the company's website being taken offline. The company's website notes that as a result they'll be delaying their launch:

During its Tuesday, May 15 launch, Voyager Mobile experienced a malicious network attack to its primary website: voyagermobile.com. Due to the network outage, Voyager Mobile is postponing its launch to a time and date in the very near future. Our goal of low cost wireless service for all will not be undermined and we strive to continue the voyage for a better wireless world.

It remains unclear who exactly would want to take down the startup, an opportunistic and bored hacker (most likely), or a competitor or friend with a nasty grudge. Most MVNOs of course do a bang up job failing all by themselves, without anybody else's help.

Very Disruptive Pricing if they can pull it off

Voyager Mobile sounds like a great new cell phone company. The pricing is so low I wonder if they can sustain a successful long term company. Is sprints wholesale access so cheap that one can offer unlimited everything for 40 a month? Good luck to them.

Moot point unless you live in a major city or this MVNO has the same rights to roam on Verizon as Sprint customers do. The native Sprint network is lacking in many parts of the country and they only achieve the coverage they have via their roaming agreement with Verizon Wireless. Around these parts my friends with Sprint phones are connected to the Verizon network more often than not.

Recently Sprint has started allowing MVNOs to roam onto VZ's network. It's even listed on the wholesale.sprint.com page.

Meh. Yet another Sprint MVNO.

Does Sprint really have that much extra capacity to have so many MVNOs running on their network?

At this price point could the network ever become oversubscribed?

If the Sprint network were to become oversubscribed would you justify paying the price difference of a more expensive carrier?

The Sprint network is overloaded or underbuilt or however you want to describe it. And that is why they charge for their service at a nice discount to MVNOs. Because they are selling an inferior service.

Very true, sprint has alot of start ups happening and not the network to support it, the unlimited data has put the whole network to a crawl, I dont think sprint can keep this up much longer, they will have to put caps on or work out something with a huge company thats willing to buy them up or whatever

If sprint where to sell not really sure who would be able to buy them besides maybe a international carrier...(china telco, or mex) the idea of google and apple seems far fetch all though google has shown intrest into certain areas no one figured they would try (fiber, cable box/motorola) so no telling.. All I can say is good luck to sprint I really want them to be able to compete, cause sadly im a AT&T customer for 13 years..and trust me anything thats able to compete with them or replace them would be awesome but o well im ramblein off topic lol srry about that

Re: Meh. Yet another Sprint MVNO.

I've had a nice jump on my home 3G service. They probably upgraded the local tower backhaul to accommodate to some flavor of "4G" or other.

I live near a college and a busy commuter line.

Voice is not the best, text and voicemails do flaky things, but data has been solid for me in the last 5 years.

Voice is great in Toledo, but data is a bit slow. Go to Cleveland and data is much better. Actually over the last couple years service has improved there. I'm on a Sprint MVNO.

But I do agree that Sprint won't be able to offer unlimited for much longer. They should just spin off their entire retail services and focus on wholesale only. Pull Clear back into Sprint and be set. After all Sprint and Clear has a HUGE MVNO base compared to their retail offerings. And with Boost and Virgin now offering 4g on WiMax- There is no reason to give up on that network.

TracFone owners could very well take over, but then it becomes an issue of the gov't going to allow an outside company own property and that much in a US based company.

Unlimited* Dial-up!

While the pricing is VERY disruptive, I guarantee you that they aren't getting full 3G. Heck when I had Sprint post-paid, I rarely saw better than 300Kbps DL on any of my Android or Windows Phone devices, on 3G.

Using Ting a Sprint MVNO

It is saving us 25 to 50 per month over our sprint service account that had NO data. We dont get free nights and weekends or mobile to mobile. Our cell usage has not dropped off but now that we actually pay for what we use its cheaper even adding about 500 to 1000 MB per month of data. Ting customer service is actually better! We can roam (talk) on Verizon, and use the phone however we like, rooting, hack, even use it as a modem or hotspot. Ting customer service doesnt mind at all.

Re: Using Ting a Sprint MVNO

With the recent "goodbye unlimited; hello 4g shared buckets" announcement from Verizon, I'm seriously considering Ting. Verizon service is great but the monthly price paid reflects that.

...Besides the clear cut savings, how has your service been (dropped calls, data speeds, etc)? What city or area of the country do you have your service?

I don't believe in MVNO carriers

I prefer to do business with carriers that actually own infrastructure like Verizon. My iPhone is on Verizon but I have done business with AT&T and US Cellular in the past.

I've had the best luck with Verizon. I had US Cellular back in Iowa during their TDMA era. I had AT&T when Verizon had poor signal strength in my area (Springfield, MA) a few years back. Verizon has improved their signal strength in my area and now rivals AT&T.

If we had US Cellular in southern New England and they sold the iPhone, I would go with them.

If it wasn't for the MVNOs you wouldn't have options.

um?

I guess this article is going to fail to mention anything about Straight Talk service that offers unlimited everything for $45/month and they now offer a bring your own smartphone device which works on either T Mobile or AT&T..I myself am using a iPhone 4 on AT&T and paying $48/month after taxes for unlimited.

Re: um?

you can do the same with Net10. There is a jailbreak for it. But also mention it's only certain phones and certain markets that allow for the T and TMO-USA phones.
