story category Louisiana Set To Approve Statewide Video Franchising
Although it won't apply to many of the state's major markets
(old news - 12:28PM Saturday Jun 14 2008)
tags: Video · competition · business · legislation
The state of Louisiana has spent the past three years battling over the question of whether or not to allow for statewide video franchising and now finally seems close to making a decision. Statewide video franchising is something that has strong support from telcos who say that it expedites the delivery of video services to consumers. A bill pushed by AT&T has made it past both the Senate and the House in Louisiana and is now pending governor approval. The bill would allow for statewide franchising but would not affect certain major markets, like New Orleans, which have home-rule charters allowing them to set their own franchise rules. The governor has ten days to make a decision on this issue.

Just Video?

Texas now has Verizon/FiOS inside of former AT&T "turf" -- thanks to their statewide franchise law -- that also includes broadband. Yeah baby -- it worked in Texas!

Re: Just Video?

I wouldn't call a FIOS Test in a major Market in Texas exactly a success just yet. Let's see them decide to expand to full market.

State wide franchise laws doesn't make this happen. Its De-Regulation. The FCC done it. Also they could have always done this just refused to do so. And don't get your hopes up that VZ will be doing it in more areas.

Largely a useless bill...

If you do a bit of digging into the number of home-rule charter cities and parishes (counties) in the state of Louisiana and it becomes clear that this bill is largely useless and really will not change things that much...

Re: State Gov't

Yeah, but then he was awarded a nationwide franchise and the whole country got to share the pain instead of just one small district...

Wow, you really went to the back of the rack to pull Spiro T. out now didn't you?. He couldn't hold a candle to the current corruption of the mayor of the chocolate city.

I wasn't the OP who mis-spelled Nagin and trying spelling "by" correctly you anonymous dolt.

You are comparing a man that had actual criminal charges filed against him, Spiro Agnew, to a incompetent bumbler with no evidence (that you can produce) of corruption or criminal wrong doing, Nagin, and are concluding that the latter is worse than the former ??? Ooookay...

New Orleans is just ONE city in LA. Dont make the mistake of thinking that the rest of LA is like N.O.

I've lived in N.O. for 40+ years until I move to the north shore where people actually think before they pull the lever (chad punching for you FL. people). The problem with N.O. is the "people" that are the non producers/voters that make up the majority of voters. Basically the tax payers are the ones that suffer. Nagin and his ilk will cater to these "voters" and leave a legacy of ineptitude.

Yeah, the third world country where most of the oil this nation uses flows through... What exactly does Florida do beside being "Heaven's Waiting Room"?

At least LA can pull off an election. FL does things and it doesn’t even count (well half of finally did count). There is more history in LA government than FL will ever experience.
I was born and raised in LA and live in FL now. Each state has their flaws. I suggest that you get out of your hole and spend time in both places.

Re: no way

What does a hurricane have to do with it? Did it wipe out the whole state? No....
FL was hit by four in one year....are companies suppose to do nothing here? Should companies not build in CA because of wildfires or avoid Iowa because of floods or the central plains because of tornados.
