wrt54g signal strength degrade trains down

Hi
can anyone suggest what to do. i have problems with my new wrt54g. only on the wireless side. i have a network and the lan is fine. speed is brilliant.
i am using a dell laptop (win xp) with the wpc54g pci card. the signal strength seems to start at 54m then drops within a short while to 1mps and at times drops out.

i have replaced the unit some 4 months ago. the orignal unit had a range of 40 mtrs. since then have upgraded the firmware on rtr and pci card. tried adjusting channels one by one. as the signal strenth is terrible. even within 4 or 5 mtrs and behind a wooden cuboard. the signal drops as normal.
i have searched linksys sites and tried most things. is there anything else to try? i wonder if linksys is reducing the quality. to make people purchase new s products or stronger ariels???
regards
Vinny

May as well buy another AP

At $60 for a pair of antennas, the cost of an AP isn't all that far off. As far as I'm concerned, I'll stick with my original plan and get another AP to make up for my substandard performance from the back of the house to my underground garage.

Are these any good? Just a ploy to make more money

has anyone used these? curious as to what the signal gain is. I'm not a techie and so not into downloading and using 3rd party firmware. Can this help me out?
ALso, are there any stores that are selling these? Besy Buy? Circuit City?
