WRT300N: 4x range, 12x throughput of 802.11g
(old news - 11:36AM Monday Apr 24 2006)
tags: wireless · hardware
Linksys has unveiled their latest Wi-Fi gear, based on the first draft of the 802.11n standard. The design of the new $150 WRT300N veers away from the tinker-toy design of the recent MIMO gear, and somewhat back to the blue/black stylings of the WRT54G. The router and the $120 card (WPC300N) will be available exclusively for a short-time through Best-Buy, and other retailers shortly thereafter.

Linksys, who have set up a promotional page with more detail here, has lightened up on the specific speed rhetoric this time around, only stating the devices offer "four times the range and up to 12 times the throughput of Wireless-G."

Amazon has the devices pre-listed for $120 and $100 respectively.

Nice

It looks MUCH nicer than the old blue/yellow/grey thing.

I'd be interested to see actual performance numbers.

This is the 3rd vendor that has come out with 802.11n draft compliant products. Looks like the "n" bandwagon is underway. I look forward to reading actual experiences from BBR members in the wireless networking forum: »Wireless Networking

Some of the performance I've seen in the various magazines puts the N stuff right at 100Mbps of actual throughput.

I'm curious to see if that holds out as retail samples hit the shelves and people start actually using it in places other than "simulated test environments".

Product Depth 2.1"
Speed Up to 54 Mbps

Speed Up to 54 Mbps
I believe, after looking at the specs, that that is the speed for 802.11g compatibility mode. For 802.11n mode the specs don't give a speed. They just list it as wireless-N.
Transmitted Power
802.11g: 12±1dBm (Typical)
Wireless-N: 10±1dBm (Typical)

Receive Sensitivity
54Mbps @ -70dBm (Typical)
Wireless-N @ -70dBm (Typical)

Re: looks like CRAP to me and no Gigabit!

NO Gigabit ports? when ALL new computers default to it and have for the last 6 months.

they can keep it! also a lot of us need 8 ports and don't want 3 boxes when one can do it.

they can eassily double stack those ports and give us 8.

guess I wait for the older brother of the 4300 or the asus model later this year with Gigabit ports and Linux inside.

Me too!

Robbie the robot or a modern take on the TV-Top UHF antenna?

Rotor it...

12x faster...that would still be faster than the broadband connecction...

Sure does but if it improves range and performance i'm all for the wacky router with the weird antennas.

Looks nice,

That's about it. 4x range and 12x speed? Let's see an independent company make that claim. Coming from Linksys that doesn't mean much. They used to base every speed claim on the slowest 802.11B router..

Meh

I'll wait. Seeing as I rarely transfer insane files between laptops, and Comcast will likely never surpass my D-Link's speeds... no rush to get something like this.
Price should come down later too... save my cash for something useful now(like more memory!).

Re: Meh

Show me it has a fast processor, has a lot of memory, runs on Linux, and is open so we can mess with it, and I'll consider it. Otherwise, no dice.

Also, will there be any performance/range increases for those who have G cards in their systems already? I am not about to go out and buy an N card. My laptop has a G card built-in.

Agreed. I will not buy 1st generation overpriced hardware. Also with my WRT56GS and it's huge antennae I should be just fine for a while.

This is not even 1st gen, its pre-1st gen. Buying equipment base on draft standards is not the brighest thing to do.

2nd generation, lower priced hardware isn't necessarily any better. See Belkin's Pre-N device and hardware revision 2...a nightmare of a product, inferior in almost every way to revision 1.

I have aused pre-n stuff

If you get a pre-n router then your g card will connect to it always at full speed.

N specs allow g and b to work together at their full speeds.

My gf uses a pre-n card(netgear) with a normal linksys router (802.11g) and she gets full 54mbps anywhere in her house .

I will be buying one of those 802.11n routers because I have used a card based on n specs and it is better in range and speed

MiMo with External Antenna?

What happens if you want to use MiMo with an external antenna? Has anybody gone down that road? I'm thinking more of the build the weather proof box and mount the thing on a small radio tower type gig. since MiMo gives such a "boost" in distance how could one implement it in a large scale manner? Anybody seen this yet?

phoneboy2

@shawcable.net

marketing specifications mean nothing!

Didn't that feature they called afterburner or speedboost or whatever Linksys called it claim up to 2x speed but achieved almost NO improvement even if the box was only 2 feet away.

Yea.....I'm sure it does 12x throughput and 4x range.....NOT! Pre-N stuff has improved range and speed but not even close to these specs. I don't expect this to be any different since the Pre-N stuff is not all that different.

phoneboy2

@shawcable.net

Re: marketing specifications mean nothing!

Oops, I meant that the current MIMO stuff is similar to Pre-N so don't expect much improvement from that equipment.

No Linksys Router for me

I have the memory of a elephant. I will not buy another router from Linksys since they CHEATED me on the last one I bought. (the WRT54G dumbed down V5) If I was to buy from Linksys again, I'm sure there would be some sort of cheating, lying or sneakiness in the deal with them. Too many other vendors to try.
